Why do you want a Pembroke?
 We rescued our current corgi a few years ago. He is the gentleman. He loves everyone including our other pets. He sleeps in his big sublet fluffy bed overnight in our kitchen. He has never needed a kennel. He is potty trained and such a love bug!

 Us! We want a lovable friend to have around, okay with, and to enjoy walks with.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
 We love the breed. It’s the big dog in a smaller package which is exactly what we are looking for. We love the playful/adventurous side of the breed, as well as the busybody they tend to be.

 We’d go on walks around our neighborhood and our nearby parks, we are next to a lovely river walk. We would play basic dog things like fetch, tug o war, and generally just play with him to keep him busy.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: 		With nipping, we would redirect the biting to toys, not people.

We would use sound. I’ve read that corgis respond well to clicker training and human sound. Training is key.

Because Corgis tend to be active little guys we would exercise him to tire him out.

Time out areas if needed, and a general mixture of all those things.


Discipline:
 I’ve learned that punishment is not a good form of discipline, but instead to treat when they do the right thing. Accidents happen, dogs often don’t know better and act on instinct. We are a reward for good behavior kind of family, and disappointing sounds when they haven’t behaved.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
 Freedom amongst the house. Luckily as a college Professor, I spend a good amount of time at home. My wife is a nurse for a doctors office, so she is a 9-5 worker with weekend off.

 Joann & I have had 3 Gorgis, and love then dearly. First was Ginger, a rescue dog from my sister in TX. Ginger was older, and was with us for 5-6 years. I still have her little "wheelchair", from when her rear legs failed. Then we had Bonnie & Clyde (also a rescue from my sister in TX) for many years. W actually had all 3 for a short time. Recently we rescued a little terrier named PJ. She is wonderful, but I know my wife would love to have another Corgi as a companion for PJ.

Potty on floor for example – continuing to take dog outside, we used the bell method for our corgis in the past and they learned to ring the bell when they had to potty of course their were accidents we took them outside immediately after potty and they learned that outside is where they should go for potty

Why do you want a Pembroke?
 We want to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi because we think it would be the perfect breed to fit our current life phase and our overall lifestyle. We lead an active lifestyle, and enjoy lots of time outdoors. We do not have an extremely large home, so we prefer a medium-small size dog. We love how smart, playful, and affectionate corgis can be. We hope to have children within the next year, which is another reason we are attracted to the corgi breed. Why do you want a Pembroke?
 Ever since I was young, I've always wanted a corgi specifically. I love that they are "big dogs in small packages" and lead a very active, energetic lifestyle. As I live in an apartment in Chicago, size is also a big factor, and I believe that a corgi is the perfect size to not feel cramped, while allowing ample room to explore and stretch his legs. I grew up with a small Cocker Spaniel (who was a couch potato) and would like a dog that I can bring to the park and beach, but also one that likes to curl up on the couch with me.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
 As someone who loves the outdoors and lives close to the lakefront and Lincoln Park, I would take my corgi out for walks daily and try and allow him to get as much open-space as possible. I am also an avid runner, and would try my best to train him to go on short jogs! My building is also equipped with two dog parks, so I think I would try very hard to allow him to interact with other dogs in the building.

I think my main goal would be to be calm and collected, as to not excite the dog, and redirect the mistake in to a more appropriate response, whether it be nipping, excessive barking, etc..

 I've learned that there is no perfect way to train a dog, so I would use a variety of different training and discipline methods. I think a combination of positive reinforcement (for good behavior) and appropriate discipline for negative behavior, including the use of noise and redirection of actions (i.e. nipping) would be useful.  This Pembroke would be for me.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
 I grew up around Pembrokes, and while never owning one of my own, their little breed quirks have stole my heart for years. I was a 10 year 4-H member, completing all 10 years of the Dog program. I saw many breeds and mutts go through the program, but the Corgis always caught my attention. I have been obsessed with the AKC since I was young, so I have done research for years on different breeds, Pembroke Welsh Corgis included. I have also done recent research on raising Pembrokes and keeping them happy.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
 I am lucky that my apartment I currently live in offers a rooftop doggy park, complete with a fire hydrant for them to pee on. I live on the Indianapolis Canal, so I plan to take him or her on daily walk to the White River State Park. I would also just make sure to give them lots of stimuli in toys and activity, but I would also make sure to spend time snuggling and caring for them. I live in a very pet-friendly neighborhood, so they would have lots to do between events hosted by the front office and the dog-friendly brewery down the street.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: 		Positive reinforcement. Negative reinforcement does nothing other than make the dog fearful. I would praise the dog for doing things right, and work to make that their preferred behavior. No dog is perfect.

 They would spend the majority of their time in my apartment, which includes a balcony. Daily (or even twice daily) walks would definitely be included, though.

 I would provide the corgi a crate to sleep in. They would always be welcome in my bed, though.

 I will take them to the dog park in the mornings, and walks in either the afternoon or evenings. We will definitely have playtime during the day and downtime, as well.
