Why do you want a Pembroke?
Owning a corgi has been a desire of mine for as long as I can remember. Growing up, neighbors and friends had corgis, which allowed me to fall in love with the breed. They are so intelligent and mischievous, but in such a cute little package! I love their funny personalities. Many people see them as a current internet fad, but I am always impressed by the fact that historically they are working animals capable of controlling animals vastly larger than themselves.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I believe that socialization and adventures are very important for the mental and physical well being of dogs, especially corgis. On top of normal weekday walks, I plan on taking my corgi to local dog parks to meet friends and run around to burn off energy. I also consider myself a "weekend warrior" and spend the weekends hiking in our local state parks. Clearly I will take into consideration dog restrictions in the park and my corgi's physical capabilities. Everyone enjoys downtime as well! A simple stroll down State Street in Madison and a stop at the Memorial Union would qualify as a "chill" day out.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would calmly but firmly indicate that a mistake was made. When the corgi does not make the mistake again, I would provide positive reinforcement such as treats, praise, pats, to reiterate that the action is correct and what I am looking for.

Discipline:
I will be honest – I am a first time dog owner. I would definitely take advantage of obedience classes to not only train my dog, but to train myself as well. I know to never hit your dog or be abusive. I would utilize a positive/negative reinforcement strategy.

Positive reinforcement would include treats, praise, pats, toys, etc.

Negative reinforcement examples would be loud, stern NO or EHH, obvious body language such as crossed arms, freezing etc. I also think I would utilize time-outs in a crate as well.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
My corgi would spend most of their time in my apartment. I'm unsure if they would be in a crate or free-roaming (that is something I would like more education on).

We would take daily walks, visit local dog parks, have doggy play dates with other friend's dogs, visit state parks, check out downtown Madison and find pet friendly places.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
No, there is nobody home during the day. My roommate and I work fulltime jobs. She is a teacher and is occasionally home before me. I have the ability to run home during lunch, and am home by 5 every night.

Where would dog eat?
My corgi would eat in a designated area of the dining room (pet mats, bowls, etc).

Where would dog sleep:
My corgi would (ideally) be crate trained. The crate would be in my bedroom with me, so we would be in the same room at night.

Play & exercise:
I am very much looking forward to playing and exercising with my corgi! From walks, toys, doggy play dates and state park adventures, I plan on doing everything possible with my dog. Dogs are life companions and I don't want to spend a minute without mine.

Daily exercise would include walks most likely 2x a day, with the possibility of some lunch time walks when not busy at work. Afternoon walks will be the longest, with the goal of tiring my corgi out. Activities will include walks, fetch or dog park run time.
