| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
This Pembroke will be for me. My family and I had dogs in the past. I helped care for two dogs who were with us for 12 and 15 years. Our last family dog passed away in 2015 from old age and a cancer of the bowel. I feel like I am ready to take on another dog for myself at this point in my life. I currently help take care of my housemate's 9 year old lab/pit bull mix. We live in a her house which has a small back yard and doggy door as access.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
The first time I saw a Pembroke was in a Japanese anime. I thought that the dog was really cute (go figure, it was a animated dog) and I looked it up to see if it was a real breed. It definitely is a real breed and they are even cuter in real life. Their short legs, long body, larger ears with a big smile, and their fun energy are all attributes I am looking for in a dog! When I walk my housemate's dog, I come across some Pembroke Welsh Corgi's and enjoy watching them trot around. The only research I have done is internet browsing on general breed information, available local breeders, local rescue programs, pros and cons of owning a Pembroke. I will continue to do research, not only on the Pembroke, but also general information on taking on a dog as your own.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
It depends on the mistake. If it's something that requires repetition, as many things are, then I have to be committed to a consistent training method whether it be positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement. And in my experience, establishing respect is important since dogs are generally pack type animals. Using treats is the most known method of getting a dog to do something but I will also try negative reinforcement to deter bad behavior. I will not harm my dog but I will try to use tone of voice and body language to convey my message.
Discipline: |
I used authoritative tone of voice and body language with my previous dogs to deter behavior. I hope to try crate training as well.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
When I am at work, my Pembroke would be home. My house mate is usual home when I am gone and her dog is also home. Her dog has a dog walker so I may ask them to take my Pembroke for a daily walk when I am gone. Otherwise, he will be home, in a spacious house with access to small back yard via doggy door, and also a spacious garage. When I am home, my Pembroke and I will go for walks at the beach, parks, jogs, and maybe road trips/camping.
