Who is this dog for? |
This is for our family. | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My friends have two Corgis, and I have really fallen in love with their temperament and attitude. There was one time I didn't see them for at least two years, and their Corgis seemed to instantly recognize me and I think that is a strong indicator of their intelligence and the bond they make with their humans. They have a never ending energy to play, and since he also has cats, I know that they can adjust to each other in the right situation. I've done a bit of reading on the breed, and I understand the possible health and joint risks that come with the breed. We also realize that we only have a house that is about 1000 sq. ft. and we don't want a breed that would feel confined in a smaller home and yard. I also follow a Corgi on "social media" and I've seen some other health issues they can develop just from being small and running through grass and weeds. I feel that this is a dog where I have enough personal experience to understand the needs that a Corgi will require.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Our yard is about 1/3 acre, so I feel that it would be a perfect yard to just play a little "fetch" or let the dog run around independently. We also live in a nice city neighborhood, so walks around the blocks will be safe since there is very little traffic. I enjoy playing disc golf and walking in parks and that could also be something for us to take the dog with us to enjoy.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
If the mess was made right away, I would immediately attempt to correct the behavior by taking the dog outside to try to show them where we expect them to use the bathroom.
Discipline: |
I would use a stern voice to distract them from the unwanted behavior, since hitting a dog is not effective. It is also important to "catch" the dog in what they are doing, so if I would see something destructive and not know when it happened, it wouldn't do any good to try to discipline at that time. This is an area where I could probably benefit from some reading to understand other effective ways to deter unwanted behavior.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
I think we would spend most of our outside time walking around the block or in the back yard, or if we're inside, we'd be in the front room.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Not most of the time. My wife and I both work during the day. We are both gone by 7:00am and return around 5:00pm.
Where would dog eat? |
We would keep their food and water in the kitchen.
Where would dog sleep: |
We would also prefer to crate train our dog to sleep in the crate at night.
Play & exercise: |
After we get home from work, I would like to spend at least 1 hour outside each night, and then give them some play time inside if they still want to play.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Restrained to the yard | ||||||
|
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Description of yard: |
We have the following in our back yard: a couple of flowers near the house, an air conditioner unit, a garage, a clothesline pole and a lilac bush. In the front yard, we only have a few flowers/bushes near the house and a light post in the yard. This is not fenced, so we would use a leash if we took the dog outside using the front door.

|

Current pets: |
|||||||
|
Current pets dog friendly? |
Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.
Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
I answered the above question yes, but I'm honestly not sure if they will be friendly right away. I know there will be an adjustment period if a dog is introduced into the house, and the cats do have lots of high places to retreat if the dog becomes excited and starts to chase them. Our cats get along with other people and small children well, once a bit of trust is established, so I don't foresee a situation where we can't work through any initial fears or anxiety.
|
Lifetime commitment to Pembroke? |
Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.
Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke? |
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.
|
Understand no guarantees? |
Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.
Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet? |
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.
