Why do you want a Pembroke? |
In October of 1996, while I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Partizansk, Russia, I adopted Charlie, a two-month old fluff ball who turned out to be a Corgi mix. He resembled a Corgi in many ways: short legs; long body; large, round front paws that turned outward; large pointed fox-like ears; alert, intelligent expression. He may have been mixed with a Sheltie or Collie because his coat was silky rather than bristly, and he was less apt to roundness, more slender, but in most every other way, he looked and acted like a Corgi. People who knew their Corgis would sometimes stop us when we were out for a walk and ask what sort of Corgi he was. Many wanted to know if he was a long-haired Corgi and where they could get one like him. Charlie was a wonderful companion. He was playful, intelligent, a loyal friend and we had many travels and adventures together. He lived nearly 19 years, before his struggles with kidney disease and arthritis in his hind legs finally became too much for him, and I had to put him to sleep in June, 2015. There were many things I loved about Charlie, foremost among them was his energy and spirit. He was energetic, loved to chase the tennis ball, was always up for a walk. He got a lot of mileage out of his short legs. He was an intelligent, playful little guy, even in his later years, and he was always up for playing around with his squeaky toys or ball. He was a good watchdog, a dedicated protector of the grounds and friendly and outgoing on the whole. He had a lot of spirit and charm and he was quite popular no matter where I lived. Charlie was a bit wary of children or those who approached him by looming over the top of him; he appreciated it if new friends got down on his level and let him sniff them out first. He could also be a bit territorial, particularly with his food and some toys, but his willfulness was part of his headstrong character. He could play well with some dogs, but others he was wary of, a bit standoffish. Nobody's perfect. Charlie was an important part of my life for many years, and I would love to adopt another Corgi or Corgi mix. I have done plenty of research into the breed both during the time I had Charlie and after, and I know a fair amount about their history, their vocation, their personality traits and common ailments. After two years, I think I'm ready to adopt another Corgi, to give it a good home with plenty of love and attention.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
With my Corgi, I would go on walks both around the neighborhood and in the local parks. There are several local places Charlie and I enjoyed, from wooded trails to open areas for chasing the tennis ball. If this Corgi is up for it, we would probably check out the dog park (Charlie wasn't very interested) and play with some of the other dogs. My apartment complex has a dog run, as well as plenty of green space for shorter walks. We would certainly have a number of indoor activities, too–chew toys and tug-of-war toys for playing. Charlie was named for Steinbeck's poodle in Travels With Charley, and so I would hope to take my next Corgi on road trips, as Charlie and I did, and have plenty of adventures together.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Usually with a stern command and some indication of what the command is related to. For example, if the corgi got into the garbage, I would take the corgi to the strewn out garbage and give a verbal reprimand. If the corgi had an accident in the house, I would take the corgi out and praise it if it uses the bathroom.
Discipline: |
Verbal reprimands, time-outs, positive reinforcement.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Most of the time would be spent at my 2 BR apartment, but a fair amount of time would be spent at my girlfriend's house, which is on roughly 2 acres of land

Play & exercise: |
Charlie got three walks per day: one in the morning, one when I got home from work and one in the evening. On the weekends, we might have more outside time at the park or in the dog run. My new corgi would have a similar schedule, depending on its energy level. Charlie and I would have playtime indoors, too, at least once per day, depending on his mood and his energy level.
