We have two elderly cats (who grew up with our recently-deceased Lab for 13 years) and I'm very concerned about bringing in any dog with a predator instinct. This makes it difficult to adopt. I thought I would put in my application on the off-chance that a dog that has been exposed to cats becomes available (or, of course, a puppy). But we adopted our last dog (we've had two Labs over the last 25 years) and would like to adopt again.

Who is this dog for?

Our family. We have two daughters, 21 and 15 and my 96-year-old mother lives with us. We also have two elderly cats.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We have friends who have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and he loves to play with their cat (they bought him as a puppy), go on walks, go to the dog park, etc. I kind of love their spirit – they're fun-loving but hard-working. We live in Chicago and I walk along the lake front often and believe that a Corgi would enjoy it there as much as I do. There are many dog parks in our area too.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
As I mentioned above, I would walk a lot with my dog. We live in Chicago and walk quite a bit (but I would never leave a dog outside when I went in to shop, etc.). Montrose Beach has a great dog beach. My other dog loved to play fetch and I know that Corgis like to fetch too. Both my husband and I work out of the home and we, mostly, want another dog around. We love dogs. We take being dog owners very seriously.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
So…I treat dogs like children in that I calmly point out the mistake and then show them a better way to handle the situation. With dogs, I would get down on their level and look them in the eye and make a noise or use a gentle leash correction. It sort of depends on the mistake, though. I have never hit my dogs and I don't plan on starting.

Discipline:
Well, you have to let the dog know who's in charge. Leash corrections, I would say, simply, "No!" If the dog is chewing something they aren't supposed to, I would replace it with a safe chew toy. Generally, though, I find that a well-excercised, socialized, and trained dog doesn't get into much trouble.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
My dog would spend time in our home: in my office during the work day, in the park, on walks. When I teach outside of the home, my husband or daughters would, generally, be home. We do go out many evenings. I would probably crate a new dog while we weren't home until we could make sure she wouldn't hurt herself by getting into trouble while we were gone.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes. My meetings or classes last about two hours each. Other than that, we are home.

Where would dog eat?
In the kitchen.

Where would dog sleep:
Probably in our bed (or in a bed next to our bed).

Play & exercise:
I would walk the dog a few times a day and, as I mentioned, try to get to the lakeshore 2-4 times each week.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
We have a cedar fence around our backyard and, where it stops, there is a wrought iron fence all the way to the alley. We would have to put up plastic mesh if the dog could get through it but it's pretty secure.

Christine Rice

Yes!

Current pets:

Current pets dog friendly?

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Our cats had a dog in the house their entire lives. But I never want to adopt and have a tragedy with my cats or have to consider getting rid of a dog. If I get a dog, I get a dog. So I want to make sure the pup isn't aggressive toward the cats.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Understand no guarantees?

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet?
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.
