Clarification on a couple of questions. We have a preference for a female, black headed tri colored, but we would consider any color female. The only reason we wouldn't consider a male is because of concerns about marking territory. We have all female dogs in our house, and our extended family that visits also have females.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Our family, which is my wife and our 9 year old daughter.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We have done quite a bit of research on the breed. They seem to have a very similar temperament with labs, just a little smaller. We've spent time with dogs and owners at dog shows and dog parks. They are great, friendly little dogs that aren't too big to be lap dogs, like our labs try to be. My daughter and wife are both in love with the Corgi breed, and I am a sucker for all kinds of dogs. My daughter wants to get into the dog handling portion of 4H, and a corgi seems to be a great dog capable of learning lots of behaviors.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Our dogs are all inside dogs. Lots of play in the backyard and walks on the nature trails we have nearby our house. As I mentioned above, my daughter would like to get involved in the dog obedience work with 4H. I've personally done basic obedience classes with each of our labs, and it would be a fantastic experience for our daughter.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
We are firm believers in positive reinforcement. Re-direction and working to eliminate the circumstances that allowed the mistake to happen are how we handle our dogs.
Discipline: |
We only use positive reinforcement. We house break our dogs by taking them outside so frequently they don't have opportunities to mess inside the house. Praise when they go outside reinforces the behavior. If some sort of correction is required, (and only if it can be done immediately) it is re-directing the dog's attention away from whatever she did, and finding something else to give them praise for. We use the word 'No' – understanding the only purpose is to get the dog's attention so we can remove/replace whatever they are doing that we don't want them to do.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In the house. Our dogs have mostly free reign of the house. They are crated during the day when we are at work, and we occasionally segregate what areas of the house the dogs can be based on where we are so we can keep an eye on them. Generally in the evenings after the dogs have eaten they have access to the whole house when we are relaxing.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Not during the week. We leave the house around 7am for work and school, and get home around 4:30. We are home on the weekends.
Where would dog eat? |
Our little dogs are getting older, and they have always free-fed. Our younger labs get fed twice a day in the kitchen while we are preparing breakfast and dinner. The Corgi would be fed on the same schedule as the labs, likely in the kitchen. Some of it would depend on how eager she might be to eat the little dogs food if we continued to leave it out.
Where would dog sleep: |
Our little dogs sleep in bed with us. The labs sleep in a wooden 'doggie bunk bed' that I built for them in our bedroom. The Corgi would likely sleep with my daughter, or in a bed that I would build for her.
Play & exercise: |
We try to take our dogs for walks daily. We avoid dog parks (have had very bad luck with dogs getting sick when we visit them) We have a yard big enough for them to run around, and take them to nearby fields and trails as often as possible.
How will you exercise your dog? |
