Who is this dog for?

My little family, consisting of my daughter and I.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Corgis are the perfect breed for us! Before we lived in Michigan, I was a professional dog trainer in Texas. I worked with a pair of Corgis named Mickie and Izzy and fell in love. This breed have such big hearts and are full of so much love. Always happy and ready for the day. My daughter and I are looking for a companion. A pup we can take hiking and snuggle up with at the end of the night. From my knowledge on he breed, they are perfect for that. We would like a dog that is a bit smaller since we live in a large condo now. We reduced a 180lb Saint Bernard when we lived in Texas as well but he passed away a little over a year ago. We are finally ready to welcome a new pup into our lives and I am positive a Corgi would be a great addition to our family.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Everything! We would include him or her in everything! From hiking to kayaking. Reading books to evening walks. Dogs are family members and our Corgi would be no exception!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I am a huge fan of positive reinforcement. Kind, gentle but firm correction in the moment such as a "no", has always worked great for me. I found in my dog training days that getting a dogs attention away from his or her bad behavior is the key to helping them learn instead of just punishing them.

Discipline:
Again, I an a fan of positive reinforcement. Not necessarily a fan of discipline. I'm always wanting to help a dog learn and understand just as a child would so it's a "stern correction" in the moment then praise when they do it right the next time without a reminder.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Most of his or her time would be with my daughter and I. I only work three days a week so we are home quite a lot. I run another business from home and hope to start homeschooling soon so our Corgi would spend a lot of time with our family.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Again, I work only three days a week. When I am at work my sweet neighbor offered to help with potty breaks and such. The other four days my daughter and I are home.

Where would dog eat?
I fed my Saint Bernard and Shiloh Shepherd raw dog food prepared by a company called Darwins. They both thrived on the diet. I would love to do the same for our Corgi. But I know some dogs are better on kibble. When I do buy kibble I purchase Taste of the Wild. I believe in grain free and wholesome ingredients to keep pups healthy and happy!

Where would dog sleep:
Hopefully in my daughters bed! We are very excited to get a Corgi and one of the main hopes is for a snuggle partner! But I know each dog is different and we would be equally thrilled with a little pup happy in his or her own bed on the floor.

Play & exercise:
My daughter and I take walks around the neighborhood every night before bed to help get her energy out. We are hoping our Corgi would want to join us. Also during Spring, Summer and Fall we kayak and hike once or twice weekly. We are also hoping to include our pup on those adventures.

How will you exercise your dog?
On leash

Our condo has a large acre field that dogs play in. It is full of space to run and trees for shade.

Household members:

Everyone in household agrees about adopting a corgi?
Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

May we do a home visit?

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Myself, Tabetha

Willing to train children?
Yes! Avery was raised around a 180lb Saint Bernard and 100lb Shiloh Shepherd. She is very mindful of animals and very gentle with them. She now has a cat who she has learned to completely take care of. I'm very proud the way she treats animals.

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Current pets:

Current pets dog friendly?

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Of course. Easing new pets into a home is a very important process. That is how I actually got started training dogs 8 years ago. People often rush the interaction and don't pay attention to the signs of each animal. I know how to read and correct problems that can arise during these circumstances.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Understand no guarantees?

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet?
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.
