| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
Every member of the family has interest in helping a Pembroke through adoption. Sarah, our son, our dog, and I are currently looking into the adoption of another dog. We have come across friends and family with Corgi's and believe they would be a great fit in our home. Although each dog is different, we can happily accommodate almost any special circumstances a dog could require. We really would not want to make one uncomfortable if they're not good with another dog or a child, but we are happy to wait until the perfect opportunity comes along.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Until recently, I was resistant to the idea of getting a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. I have only ever owned dogs that I have adopted from animal shelters. We have been looking for about a year now I have never seen a Corgi for adoption at our local shelters. I was under the impression that the only people who had them had bought them as puppies. There is nothing wrong with that, but I would rather help a dog in need of a loving family and good home. This Christmas my Uncle brought a Welsh Corgi along to the family reunion and we fell in love. I was very happy to hear that he had adopted him, and was even more mystified by an all white (very fluffy) fur. He had been in a terrible relationship with his previous owner and was quite skittish. After some gentle introductions, I was slowly shown how much fun a Corgi can be. He was amazingly attentive and sentient. I have never seen a dog able to be so attuned to the mood of a room. My uncle told me that training him was a breeze, as they're a highly intelligent breed. He loved playing with the tow-rope and had a great energy that synergized well with our young family. Whitey was also a shephard with the goats and cattle at our Grandmothers. We personally wouldn't utilize that, but I love their natural aptitude and instincts for herding. We have seen Corgis at the dog park very frequently. Winston ( a young tri-color) is one of Kova's best friends. Winston loves the thrill of being chased, and Kova loves to chase. Their natural agility makes for countless hours of fun and laughter in our backyard and in the dog park. Sarah has always had a love for them. She loves their natural athleticism, and adorable short stature. She is short too and says she "relates". |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Sarah and I are frequents at the Raccoon River dog park, the Windsor Heights Dog Park, and Gray's lake in Des Moines. We love taking nature walks and visiting the dog park. In the summers we enjoy swimming at the beaches, and even canoeing on the lake. These are all things we would go out and do for/with the dogs.
When we are at home we often go to the back yard and play with the Frisbee. Kova took a while to teach, but I would ideally like to teach our own Corgi to catch a Frisbee. Winston and Kova's favorite thing to do it play keep away with the Frisbee at the dog park. We go on walks in the morning and walks at night. When we are indoors we have plenty of rope toys, tire toys, squeaky toys, and balls. Kova is notorious for destroying the toys he has, so frequent stops to the pet store are a necessity. |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
A dog, much like anything is bound to make a mistake. Every mistake is a learning opportunity, and you have to take your frustrations and put them in perspective of the pet. There is a reason they are misbehaving, and you need to change your teaching style or schedule to accommodate.
Discipline: |
We've noticed the most effective training mechanism is to immediately react, present the problem, and sternly tell the dog "Do not" or "No". Your pet needs to know what it did to break the rules, and that it is not okay. Discipline is important, but education is key.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
We allow our dog currently to roam freely among the living room, kitchen, garage, and basement during the day. They have a dog door in the attached garage and are allowed to use it whenever they please.

People at home during the day? |
There is no one home during the day. I come home daily on the my lunch break to let our dog out, but during work there is no one else in the house.
Where would dog eat? |
We have a laundry room which we do not use (we keep our washing machine and dryer in the basement) for our dogs food and water. There is a separate corner where our second dog will have his own food and water bow.
Where would dog sleep: |
We would prefer the dog sleep with us on our bed. Kova used to sleep with us, and now sleeps with Emmett in his bed. We also have a dog bed that seldom gets use. Kova much prefers the loveseat.
Play & exercise: |
Kova is a very exercise centered dog. We have found to satiate him in the winter months, we need to take him on twice daily walks which we would bring our Corgi with us on. In the summer, we usually just have morning walks and then evening trips to the dog park. We make it a point to play daily, even if we cannot make it to the dog park. Sometimes playing downstairs is more fun for Kova. He does "parkour" off the downstairs couch and loves running up and down the stairs. |
