Who is this dog for?

My wife and I. We are near retirement, no kids, one very mild-mannered dog.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We had a lovely Corgi girl, Daphne, that was just the sweetest dog we've ever owned. We have a couple friends with Corgis and they are also sweet and gentle and fun. We love the breed. They are silly and loving with a very even temperament.

Daphne had some significant challenges with food/environmental allergies (bad breeding we think). She cost a lot of money in special food and medications, but was worth it a hundred times over.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Lots of snuggling, playtime in the backyard, walks, dog park trips. Dogs are our family and we try to have them join us in everything, where possible. No crates except for housetraining. They sleep in our bed of course.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Depends on what the mistake is, and when it happened. If I catch him in the act, a verbal correction can be made (and perhaps physically removing him from the area, like the garbage can he shouldn't be in). If it's in the past, too late for correction, instead try to limit their ability to make the same mistake (e.g., lock the garbage up better).

Discipline:
Gentle verbal correction. Positive reinforcement to do better in the future (snacks when he's doing the right thing!)

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In our house primarily, we don't leave too much. Would sleep with us, etc. I work full time, my wife works part time.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
I work full time, my wife works part time, so there would be times where the dogs would be home alone. I work only 10 minutes away so I can come home over lunch to let them out, brief playtime.

Where would dog eat?
in the kitchen

Where would dog sleep:
in our bedroom, hopefully on our bed (current dog is given the opportunity but prefers her own bed on the floor).

Play & exercise:
Can walk around the neighborhood before or after work, lots of backyard playtime, dog park primarily on weekends. And hopefully would play with our other dog.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
It's not fully fenced in; our neighbors have fences and ours is open on the side. We are planning to get it fully fenced in. We live on a very quiet cul de sac.

Household members:

Everyone in household agrees about adopting a corgi?
Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

May we do a home visit?

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Me, but mostly because I wake up first. Carol also quite involved in dog care.

Willing to train children?
No kids in the house, no plans.

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Current pets:

Current pets dog friendly?

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Yes. We've had jealousy issues in the past where two dogs weren't exactly best buddies, and we knew enough to feed them farther apart than usual, maintained alpha status for lead dog, etc. If it became a significant issue we would find a trainer or animal behaviorist to work through it.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Understand no guarantees?

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet?
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.
