We currently have 2 cats and a chinchilla, so we have to have a dog that does well with cats. The chinchilla is in a cage for most of the day and is only ever let out in an enclosed space with no other animals in the room. We aren't incredibly active, but we're more than willing to go for a couple walks a day for our furry friends. Additionally, we currently live in an apartment but have plenty of open backyard space in which to walk as well as a park <1 block away and a dedicated dog park <1 mile away.

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
Myself and my husband (listed as applicant #2).
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We did initial research with a good friend who is well versed in dog training and ownership where we tried to lay out very specific criteria for the type of dog that would fit well into our lives and corgis seem to fit. We were looking for dog breeds that could get along well with cats, are incredibly affectionate (I work from home and spend all day off and on loving on my cats – I would hope that our dog would want the same kind of attention), has a medium to low energy level or medium high but a smaller size, is relatively easily trained given that we will be first time dog owners and that I would really like to do obedience training and maybe even therapy training with my dog, and who generally have an average life span over 10 years.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Hanging around the house and going on walks to the park mostly. Occasionally we do short road trips (~1-2 hours) to go visit our family or friends who also have dogs and we would love to bring our dog along for socialization and playtime.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
We'd really like to use positive reinforcement training with our dog, so in the case of mistakes we wouldn't be interested in punishment as much as using the mistake as a training opportunity.
Discipline: |
Ensuring no rewards for bad behavior, 'time out' where the dog is asked to sit or lay down, and absolutely NEVER any physical punishment.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Around the house with us.

Absolutely. We fully intend on ensuring that our cats – and the dog will have spaces that are only theirs to retreat to in case they feel they need it during the first few months of living in the house. If, at that point we are able to integrate everyone so that they are able to be around each other with no issues, then great, otherwise we would find other ways of dealing with any problems that may arise.
