Who is this dog for?

Sarah and Nathan

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Sarah grew up with dogs and just really cares that it is a rescue. Her parents currently (and while she was living with them in the past) have a dog that is a Corgi-mix. Nate has wanted a Corgi for a very long time. He particularly enjoys the affectionate disposition of Corgis. We live in an apartment (and will for the foreseeable future) so we wanted a small/medium size dog that wouldn't feel overly cramped in an apartment, but that will also enjoy the activities that we frequently do (described below).

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We really enjoy going on walks around the city. When the weather permits, we also really enjoy getting outside of the city to go on (light) hikes through state parks, etc. We would want to take the Corgi on these walks. Additionally, we would utilize the dog parks near us for play time, etc.

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Yes

Willing to house train?
Yes
Willing to do formal training? Yes

Do you have a veterinarian?

Yes

Vet contact info:

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
This would vary pretty widely based on what the mistake is. Often I find that inappropriate chewing, etc. is correctly at the owner level by just making sure that items are not left out. For behavioral mistakes, we plan to utilize obedience training and, as a general rule, redirecting activities to direct the Corgi into better actions, etc.

Discipline:
Crating when necessary but typically telling them 'no' and redirecting their actions has been sufficient.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
An apartment in the city of Chicago.

House dog

People at home during the day?
About 50-75% of the time Nate is home all day. Sarah works a very flexible schedule is usually only gone from 10am-3/4pm.

Where would dog eat?
In the apartment.

Where would dog sleep:
In the apartment.

Play & exercise:
Our apartment complex has a dog run that is covered for days with bad weather. When not raining, etc., we would go on actual walks through the neighborhood, along the lake, etc. and utilize the many dog parks nearby. Additionally, if both of us need to work in the office more than usual, we would plan to put the Corgi into dog day care to get some socialization and exercise for the day. This dog will get a moderate amount of play/exercise.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Description of yard:

n/a as we do not live in a house. We do have a pool in the apartment complex but it is not in an area where dogs are permitted.

As for the approval to obtain a dog, there is not a restriction on us owning a dog so we aren't even going to alert the landlord until we are in the adoption process.

Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

May we do a home visit?

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Sarah and Nate

Willing to train children?
Yes (but no children currently)

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Current pets:

Current pets dog friendly?

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
I am willing to try to resolve the problem. Our cat has lived with dogs on various occasions (when Sarah has lived with her parents in the past) and the cat didn't have an issue with the dogs. The one concern is really making sure that the dog doesn't have aggressive behaviors towards the cats. I have been around dogs that no amount of training would stop the aggression towards other animals/cats. I would want to ensure that the Corgi has at least been in the presence of a cat to ensure that we don't have any issues with this. In the past my parents have had the shelters "cat test" the dog where they put the dog in the room with a cat to ensure that they don't exhibit any immediately aggressive behaviors prior to adoption and that has worked well for my family in the past.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Understand no guarantees?

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet?
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.
