Who is this dog for?

Our family of 3 (we are married, but have different last names). We have a nearly 7-year-old daughter (and a 15-year-old beagle who sadly won’t likely be with us much longer)

Why do you want a Pembroke?
My husband has wanted a corgi since we first met, 15 years ago, but we feel strongly about adopting & not shopping for a dog, so we got our first two good girls at the ARL in Des Moines. My MIL adopted a corgi earlier this year (she was a breeding bitch that was no longer wanted). We love the temperament & energy of the breed, and the fact that it has short legs so it cannot “counter surf” and steal food like our pointer mix used to. Love that corgis are sweet and usually very good with children.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Take her for walks to the coffee shop, farmers market, or to snookie’s for an occasional puppy cone. We would take her on vacations and adventures. She would take her to the raccoon river dog park, and let her tear around and chase ground squirrels in our fenced backyard. When she tires, she would snuggle with our daughter while she reads books at night or watches cartoons on Saturday mornings. She would be showered with affection by all three of us, as we’ve had a dog in our home since 2006 and spoil our girls rotten.

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Yes

Willing to house train?

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Depends on the mistake. When she potties or poops in the house, we would immediately take her outside.

Discipline:
We don’t really “discipline” our dogs. When they were puppies we crate trained them, now they roam the house at will. We clicker & obedience trained Gretchen, but Gertie us so scent-focused, she never really took to formal training.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Inside out home, with the run of the house. We have a fenced yard with a nice deck & lots of critters to chase. Our beagle spends most of her day sleeping on the sofa in her old age, but we have dog beds & toys throughout the house. Gertie sleeps in a dog bed in our room or in our king-sized bed with us.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
We both work flexible schedules. As a professor, I am home all day during the summers, but there are times during the school year were the dogs may be left alone for 4-6 hours a day if both my husband and I are working.

Where would dog eat?
In our kitchen, in the special spot if the dog food & water.

Where would dog sleep:
Depending on her age & training, she might sleep in a dog bed in our bedroom, in the dog bed in the living room, or in her crate with the door open if she prefers that.

Play & exercise:
She would get at least 2 walks a day, we have a lovely tree-lined neighborhood for strolls. We would take her to raccoon river dog park, and she would have the run of our fenced backyard. Our daughter has lots of energy to share and will be excited to play with a younger pup.
