Our first Corgi was a VERY dominant male who was not people friendly. He was quite aggressive but we had a good relationship and loved him dearly for 13+years. He especially connected with my husband at the time who was very good at working with his strong personality. Despite our Corgi's "Grumpy Old Man" tendencies, he was very loyal and loving to us, and was not a problem with my (then infant) son nor his friends, which was most important. Our second Corgi was an extremely affectionate, somewhat needy female who loved ALL people, especially children. She was much easier to walk and have in social situations. She connected with me very strongly but had no separation anxiety–such a good girl. Like our previous corgi, she had some difficult behavioral "issues" as well, but nothing we couldn't adapt to. The trade-off with both of them was well worth it. Both had very deep barks, preferable to the high, ear-piercing barks of a friend's corgi. (I know this seems minor, but I prefer the deeper bark.) Both were quite playful but not hyper or destructive out of boredom. We would prefer a cuddler as our little girl Sammi spoiled us in that respect (Chester did not like to be touched for more than a few minutes). I feel we've lived with two extremes personality-wise. Even though Chester and Sammi were polar opposites, their "corginess" has us hooked forever. I miss them both tremendously, but am thankful for every moment we had. |

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
A downsized family consisting of one single mother and college student at home. Our household adopted our first Pembroke, a male (known as "Stinky" by his foster, Debbie Ritchie!) about 20 years ago. After he passed at age 15.5, we came to your Wisconsin location and adopted a female (known as Pinky). She had severe storm and fireworks anxiety, needed 5 teeth removed, and we found out in days, an advanced case of mammarian cancer. We fell in love with her the minute we met her and there was no question we'd do what it would take to save her. Six healthy and incredibly happy years later her cancer returned and, last week, almost a year after her diagnosis we lost our sweet Sammi once it had spread to her lungs and progressed aggressively. We are not looking to replace Sammi (an impossible task), nor are we looking for an immediate match. When the time is right, our Corgi will come along. |
||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Please see my previous comments. In addition, nothing brings a smile to one's face more quickly than a Corgi! Prior to our first Corgi, we had read much about the breed. Now, after having two of different ages, genders, personalities, we've determined that, like people, they are very individual beings. Outside of physical traits (certain health concerns, shedding, etc.) we are open-minded about the type of Corgi we'll have. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Mostly walks (no running). We have a large back yard for frisbee and ball playing, but neither of our corgis were interested! I just posted pics of my Sammi on FB (Linda Gaio) if you care to see our yard. We have many children in the neighborhood so playfulness is a plus. Although corgis bring out playfulness in adults as well! I occasionally took Sammi to work at a retail shop (a photo bus also on FB). I found our corgis got plenty of exercise in our small house with a lot of stairs, large yard, and very walkable neighborhood. I see the remark below and feel "prepared" for those characteristics, even though they are not what we experienced with our dogs 100%. "very active (both, somewhat), vocal (neither), busy dogs (both, sonewhat)that enjoy being with people (Sammi, yes; Chester, no way!) and insist on receiving a great deal of affection (Sammi, never enough! Chester, occasionally, for limited times) |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I find corgis are very attentive and know when you are talking directly to them so no yelling is needed only a firm tone of voice. It would depend on the situation, but I feel they can detect that something is not acceptable in the tone of my voice and facial expression. In the case of urinating in the house I would simply say No! Point to the area and grab the paper towels. (Whenever that happened it was usually my female–a UTI, or storm anxiety, so no sense in getting angry). With my male and his aggression issues, we tried spraying a water bottle which worked okay. It only took a couple of sprays until we just left the bottle by the front door and he toned it down a bit at that location!
Discipline: |
See above. On occasion, I would remove them from the situation. For example, with Chester we'd simply say "crate" and he would grumpily put himself in there. Sammi had crate issues, which we were told by the rescue people. She would bite at the bars and already had broken teeth bc of it, so we did away with the crate for her. We'd put her in the kitchen with baby gates. Again, firm voice and eye contact was beat in both cases.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Access to the yard while we are home. full range, depending on the dog) and full range of the house throughout the day, depending on the Corgi's habits. For example, Chester loved the low level bathroom trash, so those doors remained closed, and found a few food-related gifts so those were stored in a spare bedroom closet with a lock! He was a bit of a Houdini…

People at home during the day? |
My son is between classes and, while I work during the day, 10-5, I live close to work–7 minute walk! So I'm not gone longer than 7.5 hrs and can come home midday if my son isn't there. I work with dog-people and can leave any time to take care of my pet if needed. I also am very close to my neighbors and they can always check on my corgi if needed.
Where would dog eat? |
In the kitchen | ||||||
Where would dog sleep: |
Depends on the corgi. Chester liked his "cookie and crate" bedtime ritual. Sammi preferred to sleep in the finished basement during the day, next to my bed or my son's bed at night.
Play & exercise: |
Two-three daily walks around the block. If he/she is dog friendly (my other two were not) then visits to one of the nearby parks would be great! We have a big backyard in case our Corgi wants to play ball, etc. (neither of mine were interested for more than a minute).
How will you exercise your dog? |
