Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Both applicants | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We've been interested in adopting a corgi for a while now, but haven't done so because of schedule conflicts. Of course, we still have times of being busy, but because there's more room for spending genuine time with the possible corgi now, we've decided to apply to adopt a corgi. We would like to have a companion be a part of our family, and decided a corgi would be fit. We do not have experiences with the breed, but have done research on them. Although they are at risk for many health-related issues (such as hip dysplasia), it doesn't stop us from wanting to adopt. We are well aware of their instinct of being herding dogs and that being the possible reason why they bark so much at many things, such as neighbors entering apartment buildings, as well as how active they need to be on a daily basis. We are also aware of the breed's thick, double-layered coating and how often they shed throughout the year. Corgis are known to be big dogs in a small-dog body. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Daily walks and runs, training (especially during the corgi's early years of age), any form of exercise that requires mental stimulation to keep the dog active, spend time with people and other dogs to expose the dog to others besides the owners (that being us). Relaxing activies are just as important as being active. Spending time with the dog on the couch and relaxing is an activity that is important to do too!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Instead of shouting harsh words at the Pembroke, we would firmly say, "No" and have a tone that lets the dog know it's not something they should do. Avoid shouting, as this can possibly further excite the dog.
Discipline: |
Patience is key. Treats and constant positive reinforcement are incredibly helpful as well when it comes to disciplining a dog. If the dog makes a mistake, try to catch them during the act and respond appropriately to that act. Be clear on letting the dog know they did a good job on whatever they were doing as well as being clear on letting them know what they did was wrong, or something that should not be done. House discipline and training is important, but going to professional training classes are important as well.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
The pembroke will probably be spending most of his or her time at home with family. However, it's also important that the Pembroke spends a decent amount of time both in the house as well as outdoors to maintain their health and to socially expose the dog to the outside world.
