We are looking for a red and white Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Friends of ours have a one year old Corgi named Winston and this breed would be a good fit for our family. However, because we know there are so many wonderful dogs that need a forever home, we prefer to go the rescue route and not the breeder route. We will take any age Corgi. We just want to give a Corgi who needs a loving home a family.

Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Friends of ours have a Pembroke Welsh and we felt like it would be a good fit for our family so we started doing research on the dog breed. We feel because it is a very intelligent breed that is good with kids and families, it would be a good fit for us and our three children. Because their coat is easy to care for we felt we could provide the proper grooming and maintenance a Corgi needs. Daily brushing would not be an issue for us. We are interested in training the dog and because they adapt well to obedience training, we thought this breed would be a fit for us.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We enjoy taking walks and would like to have a Corgi that would accompany us. We have a fenced-in yard and love to play in the backyard and would hope any Corgi that would come home with us would like to play outside with us. We are aware that because of Corgi's longer frame they shouldn't walk up stairs. We plan to carry the pup up/down stairs. I am a stay-at-home mom so when my kids are away at school I will be home to care for the dog and take it outside for walks and play time. When we vacation my brother would take the Corgi to stay with him or he would stay at our home and watch the pup. He doesn't have any pets now, but previously had a dog so he is experienced with pets.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
If we catch the pup mid-accident, we would try and usher it outside to finish. This would also be a good reminder to us that we should take the dog out more frequently than we are if an accident does occur. It would be a good idea for us to keep track of when the pup is going to the bathroom so we could properly track the frequency he/she needs to go outside. We would then clean the area inside where the pup had the accident. Another thing we learned from our Corgi friends is to reward your Corgi when it uses the bathroom outside. This would help reinforce positive behavior.
Discipline: |
Similar to how we worked with our children we would likely reinforce certain positive behaviors with affection and rewards, such as treats. The pup would likely learn to continue the positive activity and refrain from the negative. Like with our kids, providing structure and a loving environment seems to prevent the need for discipline.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Our Corgi would spend its time at our home. We have a 2000 square foot home (plus basement) and a fenced in yard. We have many friends with dogs so the occasional puppy play date would take place.

The Corgi would sleep in a bed either on the first floor in a pet bed or upstairs with the rest of the family. We will need to see where the Corgi is most comfortable sleeping.
Play & exercise: |
The Corgi will take an early morning walk first thing (likely 6am). Then the Corgi would take a second walk at 8:00am when the kids go to school. A pre-lunch walk or playtime in the backyard would happen. An afternoon puppy play date or playtime in the backyard would occur. Then we would walk to pickup the kids at school. Post-dinner playtime in the backyard would take place and then a final break outside before bedtime.

Description of yard: |
We live in a single family home with a yard. It is fenced in with enough area for a dog to run around and get some exercise. Our fence is along the perimeter of the entire yard and there are no gaps between the fence and the yard where a dog would fit through. Our neighbors to the north of us as well as in back of us do not have any pets. The neighbors south of our home have a lab, but the dog is older and is leash trained.
