Who is this dog for?

Me.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I had a corgi for many years! I adopted Trevor through a corgi rescue in Delaware when I was married and living in DC. My marriage didn't last but I got Trevor in the divorce and he and I spent a very happy 12 years together. We even moved to Jerusalem for four years and then back to Chicago, my hometown. I'm a writer and have written a lot about Trevor. He was even featured in Chicago Magazine for an article on doggy spas. It's been 5 years since he died and I haven't been ready to bring a new dog into our family until now. In brief, my experiences with the breed is he was very smart, he was good with other dogs, he was devoted to me and he liked to be petted but on his own terms. We were a team for a long time. I didn't have to train him and he didn't destroy anything in the home and he wasn't aggressive. Maybe I was lucky with him but I would go to a dog trainer if I needed to.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I would take the dog on at least 4 walks a dog and longer walks on the weekend or when there is more time and right now with the shelter at home there is more time. In real life, I go into an office and would have to get a dog walker for the mid day walk but I'm home by 5 pm. If the dog was interested in agility I would do that. I think my previous dog would have enjoyed that. If the dog is good with other dogs I would take him or her to the dog park or beach.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would work with a trainer. I didn't have to train my late dog that much so I didn't have to do a lot of discipline. I think one way is to redirect the attention. I also think positive reinforcement is a good way.

Discipline:
Being clear and consistent are important as are positive reinforcement and praise and treats. I would prefer a dog that is a bit older and trained because I am willing to do training but I don't have the experience to start from zero.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
At home with us.

People at home during the day?
I am a solo parent and have a 7 year old son who is good with animals. Right now we're both home but when the world is back to normal, we are gone during the day – my son at school and me at work – but I would have a dog walker mid day and my son and babysitter are home by 4 and I'm home by 5. I walk the dog 3-4 times per day and weekends we have more time for longer walks.

Where would dog eat?
In the kitchen in a designated area for him or her.

Where would dog sleep:
On his bed wherever he wants to sleep in the house or in the crate if he or she feels safer there.
