Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
We are looking for a Corgi or Corgi mix for our family. We are a family of 5 and will be caring for the dog together (Melissa and Bryan, as parents, supervising, of course).
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We love Corgis because they are just so smart. They are curious, adventuresome, and have such strong personalities. Our Corgi mix (we think Corgi and Jack Russell) is extremely smart — we actually bought a second dog when she was 1-2 years old because we felt she needed more mental stimulation than we could give her at the time (and it really worked!). She is also a pretty dominant dog, but she will patiently take her time to outwit us or any other dog she plays with. We have rules and have trained her (she is 12 years old now), but we joke that she is still training us. 🙂 We are NOT unfamiliar with the strong personality of the Corgi and we would do our best to keep a new dog's mind and body active.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Lots of walks around the neighborhood, playing soccer in the backyard (our current Corgi mix loves this), camping and hiking. We would train him/her to sit, stay, come, shake paws, roll over, search.
Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs? |
Yes | ||||||
Money for basic care? |
Yes | ||||||

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
It depends on the mistake, but most often, we would just show the appropriate behavior the next time it occurs (assuming it's something that will occur again). For example, chewing on the wrong thing — we would be sure to emphasize what *can* be chewed on. We would use the word "NO" to let the dog know something was unacceptable. If the dog is still housetraining, for example, if caught in the act, we'd pick the dog up, say NO, and place it outside (and next time it pees outside, praise it a whole bunch). If it peed in the house and we didn't catch it in the act, then we'd just have to try to avoid that happening in the future and make sure to praise it when it goes outside.
Discipline: |
Using the word NO, praising desirable behavior, using distractions if bad behavior happens, avoiding encouraging bad behavior (if it has a dominance issue, then perhaps don't let it play tug of war with a rope toy with the kids, that kind of thing). I feel as though we'd have a slight advantage with a 12-year-old trained Corgi mix at home who can demonstrate desirable behavior as well.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
On our first floor, with our 12-year-old Corgi mix, and with our family. I work from home part-time (always have, even before COVID-19), and my husband works longer shifts 4 days a week, so someone is often home. In a "normal" world, we leave for short periods of time often for kid activities, and when that happens, the dog would stay in a crate. The dog would also stay in a crate for periods of time if the kids are gone but I am working in my office (absolute max, 6 hours twice a week).

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.
Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
Yes. Meadow is very highly tolerant of other dogs (even puppies — though she will eventually let them know who is boss). If a dog ignored her, she would be fine with it. She is an older dog, however, so it is important to us that a new dog is not dangerously aggressive to her.
Lifetime commitment to Pembroke? |
Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.
Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke? |
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.
Understand no guarantees? |
Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.
Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet? |
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.
