Who is this dog for?

Myself

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I love that these dogs are small but pack a ton of character and playfulness into their personalities. As an owner of a herding dog, I know just how smart, active and loyal they are. They are filled with potential and need loving care to bring it out.

I also like that corgis tend to get along well with people, dogs and children. I really want a dog that wants to snuggle with me, and offer up love and play to my loved ones.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I take long walks every day and run several times a week. If the corgi wants to run with me, awesome. Josie hates running, so she just gets walks, fetch and dog park. I live right by Lake Harriet (and its off-leash dog park) and Bde Maka Ska, so plenty of fun adventures at the lake await.

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Money for basic care?

Yes

Money for unforeseen medical expenses?
Yes

Willing to house train?
Yes
Willing to do formal training? Yes

Do you have a veterinarian?

Yes

Vet contact info:
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I use positive reinforcement training to reinforce good behavior and gently steer away from bad. I have learned from many behavioral experts that this approach works well for dogs.

When we got Josie, she was a very difficult puppy. She would eat my shoes, eat my boss's shoes (when I brought her to work), rile up other dogs, bite people (puppy style), you name it. I also put her through every level of obedience at the Canine Coach, asking for teachers who also had special needs dogs. (Josie is deaf.) She grew up to be perfectly sweet and loving! She also has great boundaries, never gets into things she shouldn't, never bites and is fairly submissive with other dogs. She's still silly though, and I love that.

Discipline:
I would gently say no, but be careful not to overly shame or scold, which can lead to secretive behavior. In general, rewarding good behavior with a treat is best.
If a dog is being very naughty, I stop the activity they are enjoying to show them that their behavior isn't going to be rewarded. So if Josie is naughty in the car, we turn around and drop her off at home. Or if she hits me hard with her bone headbanging during fetch, we stop playing. That's how she learns people don't like it when you hit them hard with a bone!

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Indoors, at home, with me.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, just me. I work from home for the foreseeable future. I work in advertising, so it is easy for me to do all my work on the computer with a dog by my side. My clients love it when a dog makes an appearance for affection or fetch.

Where would dog eat?
I have a special area next to my kitchen for doggie dinners.

Where would dog sleep:
In bed with me if they like, or in a dog bed near the bed. If they prefer a kennel, that's ok, too.

Play & exercise:
I have a large, fenced-in patio that is all mine in my duplex. It is completely secure for dogs and provides a huge space to play fetch or just be underfoot during a barbecue. I go out there a lot, and we could fetch and play. I also walk every day and run 4x a week, so the corgi could come along. We would probably go to the off-leash dog park once or twice a week too.

I am extremely careful with dogs. With Josie being deaf, my worst fear is her running off into traffic and getting hurt. I would never let a dog off a leash or put them in danger near a busy road. Even opening my front door, I have a barrier so Josie could never sneak out. (She isn't inclined to, but still, it's my worst fear.)

Description of yard:

To back up a little, I recently moved because I went through a divorce. We are sharing Josie currently. I'm in search of a corgi because I love the breed so much, and I believe they would get along well with a blue heeler. I moved to a duplex (rental) for a year, and plan to buy a house with a fenced-in yard once my lease is up next spring. My duplex is large, with two bedrooms, and a large, fenced-in, dog-safe patio. It also has a (non-fenced) yard. The other tenants are a small family, and the kids (9 and 10) love dogs and love to play with Josie. There are no swimming pools or worrisome objects like that in my home.

Because I'm not sure where else this fits, a couple other notes about me:
-I am an artist and photographer and my corgi friend would be a MAJOR muse. I have made countless Josie paintings and she has her own Instagram. http://instagram.com/josiegrossydog. You would not be lacking in cute corgi follow-up photos.
-I am very passionate about animal shelters and animal rescue. Josie came from a shelter and was rejected by her first family because she was deaf. I am so grateful to that shelter and regularly send them donations. Animals, like humans, are imperfect and have complex stories. They need compassion and care for the uniqueness of their spirit, and someone to give them a second chance. I am open to a corgi up to around 7 years of age, and would have no problem with a corgi who is deaf like Josie, or has another disability. I am also open to corgi mixes. I care most about having a dog that has a great soul and a genuine bond with me. I want to have a friend in my dog. It's a lifelong dream to have a corgi, but I am open to corgis of all walks of life, as long as I can properly care for one. However, a corgi over 10 might mean heartbreak too soon for me, as I would love to have children and have them meet my dog someday.

Household members:
{Describe all the people who live in your home, include names, ages and interests. For example, Mary Smith, 29, Enjoys cooking, dog training, gardening and running.:75}

Everyone in household agrees about adopting a corgi?
Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

May we do a home visit?

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
myself

Willing to train children?
I do not have a child but hope to someday! And yes of course. I had a dog as a kid, and I can honestly remember having no clue how to treat or take care of a dog. I am willing to have the child take in resources or work with the trainers to be a great friend to their dog sibling. That said, I also wouldn't be impractical and rely on a child to do more than a child can for a dog. I'm the dog parent; they're the kid.

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Current pets:

{Please list and describe all of the pets that currently live in your home, including the name, type, age, sex and whether it is neutered. For example, Lenny, komodo dragon, 3 years old, not neutered.:80}

Current pets dog friendly?

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Of course! I believe trainers like the ones at the Canine Coach can help, and I am willing to pay for great training and mitigation of problems.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Understand no guarantees?

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet?
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.
