Who is this dog for?

Both of us.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We have owned and dearly loved 3 pembroke welsh corgis. We love their curious nature and sense of humor. They are the perfect, compact size! They are friendly yet great little watch dogs – we miss the pitter patter of those little paws when they run to a window to check something out! We understand the importance of exercising a corgi as they can be chow hounds and love food- none of our corgis have ever been overweight. As we are both recently retired and in good health, we look forward to caring and loving another little corgi.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We have a great neighborhood for walking so that would definitely be a regular activity. We also may pursue obedience training as we have with several of our other corgis. We don’t travel a lot, but when we do, we would love the companionship of of our pup.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Although corgis are generally very outgoing, they are a sensitive breed. You really need to be mindful of that and not be harsh in talking or correcting them. We have rarely had our corgis make any mistakes in terms of chewing, etc. since we usually pup proof our home for a new arrival. For potty training, we have also used a crate. When they have made a potty mistake in the house, we look at other factors that may have caused it, like illness, or not getting them out enough.

Discipline:
Again, we have always been mindful of tone of voice with our pups. Usually a No, spoken with authority is all that is needed. We have usually kept a dog crate with a nice cushion in the kitchen area and would use that as a “time out” for naughty behavior. We just don’t want to associate the crate with bad behavior since they are useful when a pup is ill or being potty trained.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Our dogs have always been able to roam free in the house altho they do tend to want to be in whatever room we are in at the time which we love!

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, we are retired so we are usually home throughout the day.

Where would dog eat?
In the kitchen. We have had bowls with water and food available.

Where would dog sleep:
We have always had a dog bed set up in our bedroom and one in the living room.

Play & exercise:
Walks in the morning and evening have always been our routine so we would incorporate that habit. We are pretty active so I’m sure there would be plenty of opportunities for play. We also have a 6 year old grandson who visits us frequently and was very good with our previous corgi. We recently had major landscaping done to our backyard which necessitated the removal of our fence. We would never let our pup be off leash for that reason.
