Who is this dog for?

This corgi is for me. I am looking for a support dog and a corgi to rescue. I grew up with a Corgi and this breed is the only breed I want to have because I know how amazing and lovable and loyal companions they are. I work at the children's hospital nearby an on my off days I would love a pup to explore the city with. I am active but just like a corgi, enjoy my lounging time :). I hope to find the right fit through this rescue agency!

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I grew up with a male corgi – we found him when he was a puppy and I was 15 so I spent a lot of my formidable years with this breed. He sadly left us too soon in an accident but we reflect on our sweet dog often and it is the guiding decision to my wanting a corgi. He was so kind and playful, always wearing a smile. I do know they are very active and playful breeds. I love the herding category and to watch a corgi in its primal herding state is what I love so much about them. They are very smart and loyal. I have begun my research on this dog but will claim I am not a master but determined to learn how to best raise this new addition. I want the best for this dog and will do what I can to make him happy and thrive. I remember ours being active but requiring some breaks when we played fetch for too long. He barked but we were able to train him out of it – I plan on working with a dog trainer at CIA to help establish and grow our bond. I am an affectionate person. Im a lover through and through and I love that about this breed. The days when iolo and I would lounge on the couch were some of my most fond memories.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I am a walker and I love walking up through Lincoln Park. I expect this dog to be able to walk 3-5 miles with rest as needed a couple times a week or someone to explore the city with when its nice out. I will take it to the dog park to socialize with other pups and get his energy out. I know they love to play fetch so I have already planned that for us. On days that I work I will certainly make time for a before and after shift walk – with dog walkers to come in as needed and often.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Id respond with compassion! You have to be patient when raising a pet or human. I will do my best to maintain composure of course but Im generally a very patient person. I am a nurse and will do my best to respond with a calm approach. As Ive mentioned prior, I will be working with a trainer at CIA and am reading her book about how to raise a dog in the city so I hope to gain the knowledge from those resources to train dogs to correct mistakes in the best way to help my dog thrive.

Discipline:
I think a firm but compassionate approach to training dogs has worked well for my family in the past. I am determined to learn the best possible way but I won't casually bypass the importance of disciplining and training a dog the best way research has to tell us. I dont think shaming or harming a dog is appropriate, they need to trust you and not live in fear. Corgi's are intelligent and if I can work with that intelligence, I believe I can help rear the dog to not make as many mistakes.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In my apartment. I do have a balcony that I plan on setting up an "emergency" grass plot. It will just be me and the corgi most of the time.

The building does not allow dogs openly but they honor the support animal protection. I have my doctor's support and documentation to allow for this.
