Who is this dog for?

This pet would be for both my husband and I.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have always wanted a Corgi! I love their appearance and history. I have not had one before, but I've had a smaller mixed breed Dachshund with a similar build (long and short). I also feel that a Corgi would be a good fit as we already have a special needs cat for which we have stairs to go up to the bed and the couch. I have done my research and, being a veterinary student, will be able to fully care for this pet and any potential medical concerns that come up. This will be my husband's first dog (he has always wanted a dog) and I feel a Pembroke would be a great first for him with their history of trainability and even temperament.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
There is a park with a paved walking trail right across the street that we frequently go to, so we would plan on taking walks there. Our apartment complex also has a small dog park that we would bring them to. Being a vet student, many of my classmates also have dogs and frequently set up playdates between pets for socialization and stimulation. When we visit family in NC we would also take them along and visit the beach if possible.

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Money for basic care?

Yes

Money for unforeseen medical expenses?
Yes

Willing to house train?
Yes
Willing to do formal training? Yes

Do you have a veterinarian?

Yes

Vet contact info:
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If they made a mistake, that's something that would indicate to me that we may need more training on that or figure out how to chance the situation for the future so that it is corrected.

Discipline:
To me, it's better to work on training to prevent situations in which discipline is "needed". Reinforcement of positive behaviors is more effective than punishments. The most I would probably be able to do after a negative behavior is to remove my attention from them or if I'm able to catch them in the moment, redirect the negative behavior.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Our Pembroke would spend most of their time in our apartment with me.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
My husband works out of state so the care would fall to me mostly. I'm usually home for most of the day, but it depends on classes. Since I'm mostly in lectures, much can be done from home as of right now.

Where would dog eat?
Our corgi would have its food setup in the living room or kitchen.

Where would dog sleep:
Our corgi would most likely sleep in bed with us, unless they preferred to go to their bed. I would have a crate setup just in case as well.

Play & exercise:
We will provide plenty of toys and stimulation. There's a dog park within our apartment complex, a park right across the street with a paved walking trail, and there are multiple other parks in town that are dog-friendly. I also have many friends with dogs that I'm hoping to set up playdates with for socialization. My best friend also has a fenced in yard that we are able to use and can let our dogs run around in off-leash.
