Who is this dog for?

I would be adopting for myself. I live in an adult home in a duplex upper, and am looking for a companion to offer me regular responsibilities at home. A Pembroke would be the ideal breed for me as I have a small vehicle, and would be able to carry it up and down staircases if ever necessary. I also have a very large yard for exercise and play outside of walks. Thank you very much for the opportunity

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I've never had a dog smaller than a Husky (as a child and teenager), but I always preferred smaller dog breeds due to my physical strength. While this would be my first time having a dog as an adult, I would physically be able to manage it. Aside from aesthetics, Pembrokes always stuck out for me for their level of comfort in the home. They have a great balance of requiring attention and training, needing moderate exercise, and relaxation in the house during off-hours. I've visited older adults who have had them for long periods of time and were able to build a comfortable schedule relatively easily with them.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
A guaranteed daily walk of at least 3 miles. This is a goal for myself either way, but a dog would also give me much more drive as well. I also plan on trying out higher energy activities in my yard with fetching toys in afternoons in lieu of a second walk.

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Money for basic care?

Yes

Money for unforeseen medical expenses?
Yes

Willing to house train?
Yes
Willing to do formal training? Yes

Do you have a veterinarian?

No

Vet contact info:
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I am very patient especially in the home. I understand that accidents may happen and that there is no need for punishment in training a dog. I would simply resolve the situation and try to guide the dog to avoid the repetition of the mistake slowly.

Discipline:
I plan on trying a discipline based on inattention for bad behaviors and praise for good ones. The most I would actively do for discipline is separating the dog from the stimulus, and repeating this until they associate the negative behaviors with removal, and lack of negative behaviors with some praise. I understand this will be a long gradual process, but will slowly build up to repetitive good behaviors.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
I anticipate the Pembroke spending more time inside than outside for the first year until I can establish their comfort level in my yard with another dog. I will accompany them full time outside. We have a fenced yard, and I would like to reach a point to where I can trust them for some time alone outside to venture.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, I work seasonally so over the full fall/winter months I'm at home almost all the time doing freelance work on my computer. I also have 2 adult roommates that have different schedules, so someone is almost always home regardless.

Where would dog eat?
I would designate a spot indoors in the kitchen for food, and would provide both indoor and outdoor sources for water.

Where would dog sleep:
Definitely indoors. I don't plan on kenneling, so my initial idea is wherever they find suitable in the house.

Play & exercise:
I plan on doing at least a 3 mile walk a day early. I also plan on either doing a second walk later in the afternoon, or some higher intensity games in our yard with toys.

How will you exercise your dog?
