Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
My husband and I are beginning retirement. I am fully retired, my husband is working still but mainly from home. We own a farm with goats and sheep, miniature donkeys, chickens, cats and two dogs. Our dogs are border collies. One is a 10 year old male and has slowed a bit, the other a two and 1/2 year old female who is still very energetic. Spayed and neutered. Life on the farm is busy and quite routine. We are looking for a smaller dog that might be better at traveling someday. We have a motor home that our dogs do not seem tolerate well. So as we begin to travel more and work less we think a corgi might be the next breed we would like to have.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We love herding animals on the farm. They tend to stay around home since they do not hunt. They are generally kind to the other animals. We love the energy. As we slow down our lives a bit working toward retirement, we think we would like a smaller dog that might enjoy traveling a bit. We have always talked about owning a corgi and know a friend who has owned them.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We generally stay home but we are outside much of the time. Our older dog no longer spends the entire day outside farming with us, but our younger dog does not leave out side. We have a routine that is followed every day and we find that our dogs love that routine. So we would expect our pembroke to follow that routine with us and integrate into our busy outdoor life.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
We start with saying no, giving a look and giving them another chance. Our border collies are very intone to our faces for pleasure or displeasure. We tend more toward positive reinforcement. They are also in tune to our voice intonations. We also have training collars that have tones and an electrical shocking (which we rarely use). The tone is usually enough to get their attention. We use that to train them not to get too far away from us our near the road. It has worked well. They now are trained to not go past landmarks when we go get the mail, so as not to get close to the road.
Discipline: |
We typically do not need to discipline our dogs much. Our younger dog was not as attentive to people as our older one. She was all work and business. She just wanted to herd animals so she was more difficult to train. She just didn't seem to care what we thought or whether we were happy with her. So we first had to form a really constant loving relationship with her so that she cared what we thought of her. But, now she is very, very affectionate with us and really wants to make us happy.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Our dogs are with us all the time during the day. At night our older dog goes to bed with us while the younger dog just likes to sleep on the couch. If she comes in our bedroom at night she usually will ask to be let out to the living room after a few hours. When we leave the house they have free run of the house. We don't leave them for extended periods of time, so they don't seem too worried about us being gone.

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes | ||||||
Where would dog eat? |
Our dogs eat in larger room together. Our older dog, still the dominant, eats first while our younger dog will eat after he is done. She does this on her own. We set his dish down first and hers second, but she just sits by it until he is done eating. He doesn't bother her while she is eating. If another dog were in the mix we would see if that arrangement would still work or we may feed them all individually while shutting the door to make sure everyone can eat in peace. We will see how they behave.
Where would dog sleep: |
Sleeping would depend on their personality. Our older dog hated us going to bed and leaving him alone someplace else in the house, so we invited him in. Our second dog would rather be by herself. We are quite flexible with sleeping.
Play & exercise: |
That will never ever be a problem. Our house, while we are getting older, is still a very active.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Restrained to the yard | ||||||

No, I don’t have a fenced in yard.

Description of yard: |
No pools, just 40 acres of fun. We have a woods with a shallow stream and a little lake that is shallow at the edge. No dock. We have fenced in areas for the farm animals. The only hazard is a road which is several hundred yards from the house. We do not tend to walk that way unless we are getting the mail. The other hazard is an electric fence that will not kill but only shock the animal. We have trained our dogs stay back from that fence. As all of our animals have learned in one way or another to stay back from that fence.

Willing to train children? |
We have a 4 year old grandson who has two dogs in his home. But we still keep a close eye on him around our dogs because they are not so used to children. He has been taught to only use one hand on a dog to pet and to stay away from their face and tail. Our older dog has pain in his hips so our grandson has been taught to never touch or run into his hid end.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Rachel and Mitch and the whole family. We have four kids ages 6-10 and a two year old pomsky.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
(Rachel) I have ALWAYS adored the breed and always dreamed of having a Pembroke Welsh. I had a friend long ago who had one and the first time I met her hit me like a ton of bricks. It was love at first sight. The more I learned about them the more I loved them. They’re the whole package. Intelligent and sweet, affectionate and hard working, active but still cuddly. They require dedication and time but give that dedication and time right back. While I am the biggest corgi fan, I discussed different dogs with the family and we all agreed that a corgi would fit our family and lifestyle perfectly.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We are already a dog family and many of our activities are planned around including our pomsky. We go for two mile walks almost daily. We live in the country near many trails. We play in the backyard regularly. We visit family for puppy play dates (a terrier, a blue heeler and a boxer mix) and we have seven dogs for neighbors ranging from a bull mastiff to a Pomeranian and they ALL play well. Daily “chill” time includes tug-o-war and endless cuddling. We also like to find fun little brain games to challenge our pomsky and give her a change of pace.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Depends on the mistake. If it’s potty training, a loud NO if caught in the act and take the dog outside immediately after and encourage to go potty repeatedly until they go, then heavy positive reinforcement and a treat.
If the dog acts out or disobeys, we follow the same actions as above. Immediately correct them, take them aside and show them how we want them to act appropriately in that instance and give heavy positive reinforcement when the desired action is acted out. |
||||||
Discipline: |
Verbal correction. “no” “stop” “off” “ drop” and positive reinforcement when they do what is desired.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
At our side. Free reign within the house and travel with us to most places when we leave. We crate train our dogs and they have their safe space while we are at work.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
My name is Katherine Hull and I am a student at Saint Mary's College. This corgi would be for my brother Joseph, my sister Caroline, and me. We love animals and would love to take on a corgi.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I love the breed! I have always loved corgis, their personalities, and their love for people. I have had neighbors who have had corgis and they are always the kindest well-trained dogs. I have done research on the breed, and we are aware of their genetic dispositions to things like disc slips.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We would go on walks, play in the backyard, and play with the dogs next door! We want to socialize the corgi as much as possible. We're looking for reasons to get out to the house!

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Me. | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I had a corgi for many years! I adopted Trevor through a corgi rescue in Delaware when I was married and living in DC. My marriage didn't last but I got Trevor in the divorce and he and I spent a very happy 12 years together. We even moved to Jerusalem for four years and then back to Chicago, my hometown. I'm a writer and have written a lot about Trevor. He was even featured in Chicago Magazine for an article on doggy spas. It's been 5 years since he died and I haven't been ready to bring a new dog into our family until now. In brief, my experiences with the breed is he was very smart, he was good with other dogs, he was devoted to me and he liked to be petted but on his own terms. We were a team for a long time. I didn't have to train him and he didn't destroy anything in the home and he wasn't aggressive. Maybe I was lucky with him but I would go to a dog trainer if I needed to.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I would take the dog on at least 4 walks a dog and longer walks on the weekend or when there is more time and right now with the shelter at home there is more time. In real life, I go into an office and would have to get a dog walker for the mid day walk but I'm home by 5 pm. If the dog was interested in agility I would do that. I think my previous dog would have enjoyed that. If the dog is good with other dogs I would take him or her to the dog park or beach.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I would work with a trainer. I didn't have to train my late dog that much so I didn't have to do a lot of discipline. I think one way is to redirect the attention. I also think positive reinforcement is a good way.
Discipline: |
Being clear and consistent are important as are positive reinforcement and praise and treats. I would prefer a dog that is a bit older and trained because I am willing to do training but I don't have the experience to start from zero.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
At home with us. | ||||||

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
I am a solo parent and have a 7 year old son who is good with animals. Right now we're both home but when the world is back to normal, we are gone during the day – my son at school and me at work – but I would have a dog walker mid day and my son and babysitter are home by 4 and I'm home by 5. I walk the dog 3-4 times per day and weekends we have more time for longer walks.
Where would dog eat? |
In the kitchen in a designated area for him or her.
Where would dog sleep: |
On his bed wherever he wants to sleep in the house or in the crate if he or she feels safer there.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Our family! | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We adore corgis! My kids (and I) think they are so funny and cute. We also know that they are playful, loyal, and protective of their people. We are looking for a small dog and don't mind the shedding. We have a fenced-in yard in the city and live adjacent to a large park so we'll have room to give our corgi plenty of activity. We'd also especially be interested in an older dog as we will be first-time dog owners and would love to have an old dog teach us new tricks 😉

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Me | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I would love the opportunity to adopt a PWC because I love their huge personalities. They are a great sized dog with drive and ambition. I appreciate those qualities in them. Plus, they are so fantastically cute and they kind of seem to make you work for their affection- I like that. I don't have much experience with the breed, other than meeting them here and there. They remind me a bit of the Scottish Terriers- which I grew up with and love.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We would go for walks, go to the lake that's just a couple blocks away on warm days, we would explore the state parks, we would snuggle and lounge on the furniture. We would play ball with the other dogs, go for road trips, visit my folks place where we could do lots of exploring. We would spend time grooming, as that fantastic coat needs proper care, we would go to the vet to maintain health. |
||||||
Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs? |
Yes | ||||||
Money for basic care? |
Yes | ||||||
Money for unforeseen medical expenses? |
Yes | ||||||
Willing to house train? |

||||||
Do you have a veterinarian? |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I would first look at the circumstances, why the dog was put in the situation of making the choice it did- and work from there, how can I improve the circumstances and show what my expectations are. I have fostered approximately 50 dogs in the last 3 years. When a new dog comes into my home, after the initial "shut down period, " the new foster is tethered to me when in the home, so I can show it the expectations and it can see how I interact with my dogs. It seems to be a really great way of creating that bond and just showing the new dog the ropes of the home. |
||||||
Discipline: |
Like said above- I've found with the tethering, I can quickly re-direct the dog so it's not set up for failure. Dogs are so smart and they learn so quickly. I understand that dogs want to have positive interaction with humans, and they want to do the right thing. I have expectations for my dogs. When they do something wrong and they are in the act of it, a stern "no" with an alternative offer seems to do well.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Initially, they would be crated indoors when I'm not home, but only until they prove they can be trusted in the home. Once that is apparent, they would be lose in the house while I'm at work. They would never be left unattended outside.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Not during the weekdays. I work 8-4, and am home from 4o'clock on, and home on the weekends all day.
Where would dog eat? |
Wherever it is most comfortable.
Where would dog sleep: |
Hopefully on the bed with me and my other dogs, otherwise wherever they are comfortable- the couch, one of the several dog beds, spare bedroom, on the carpet, in the crate- wherever it wants.
Play & exercise: |
I have a very large fenced in yard, we play a lot of chase and ball in the yard, but we also walk daily when I get home from work. My house is directly off the walking trail- so we have few great loops we do every day.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
Willing to pick up dog waste? |
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.
Willing to use a crate? |
My fence is a 5 foot high fence that is very large. I keep it clean from "dog debris" and have lots of toys to play with. It's nice and shaded. It is attached to the home, so I can open the sliding glass door directly to the fenced in yard, so there's no chance of escape.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Myself and my husband, Jim Kamin
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I love the breed so much. I think they have wonderful personality and I just love the way they look. They are generally very smart and have a good nature.
Our family used to doggy sit for a Corgi whose family traveled a lot. He was really part of our family. He was affectionate in a different way. He didn't like to snuggle which was ok but he did always want to be with us. Our sons are grown now and my husband and I would love a Corgi. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Mostly dog walks and simple dog training tricks, etc. We are very much a dog loving family. Our son and his wife have a dog and we love him. They live in New England and don't get to see them enough.
