I have a home with no children but 2 senior cats. Corgi would need to be one that would not be aggressive towards them. I can work on herding behavior, and one of the cats is very assertive and won't allow a dog to mess with her.

I am single and work outside the home. I would need a dog that is housebroken and did not have significant separation anxiety, as I am gone for anywhere from 4-10 hours at a time.

Who is this dog for?

Myself

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I just yesterday lost my almost 12 year old corgi to cancer. I was his owner for 8 years, having obtained him from the Middle Tn Corgi Rescue in 2012. Having him has lead me to a love for and appreciation of the breed. I love their quirky personalities, big personalities in little bodies, and their intelligence.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Walks, traveling companion. I do not show or breed. My last corgi went almost everywhere with me, provided that I could take him.

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Money for basic care?

Yes

Money for unforeseen medical expenses?
Yes

Willing to house train?
Yes
Willing to do formal training? No

Do you have a veterinarian?

Yes

Vet contact info:
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Not to scold the dog harshly but to try and reinforce good behaviors so that he/she learns appropriate behavior.

Discipline:
I hardly had to discipline my previous corgi, as he was so good and listened pretty well. I would tell him "no" or "bad dog" if the situation was dire enough that the behavior never needed to be repeated (like chasing another animal or snapping at the cats (which he did a time or two)). I do not support any physical retaliation as part of disciplining.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Indoors. My home.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
No.

Where would dog eat?
I have a spot in the kitchen where I feed my animals. Dog was kept separate from the cats to avoid food aggression behaviors (my last corgi did not like to share his food).

Where would dog sleep:
Usually beside my bed. I could crate overnight if need be, but would prefer not to.

Play & exercise:
Yes. Walks or yard time in the afternoon after I get home from work. Play indoors (I have a large house with lots of room for play).

How will you exercise your dog?
On leash

Fenced yard?

No, I don’t have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?

Breed/size restrictions?

Description of yard:

Large open back yard, not fenced in, but there is a fence separating me from the property behind my house to prevent roaming that direction. Neighbor has a dog and uses an underground fence. My previous dog did not like to socialize with that dog due to its energy level, so fencing the back yard was not an issue. Neighbor on other side does not have dogs. I live at the end of a cul-de-sac, so we don't have a lot of traffic, but I do be mindful when outside to approaching vehicles. Front yard is not fenced either. No homes in my neighborhood uses fences for pet confinement (all use underground fencing) and I have been very hesitant to utilize this type of fencing on my otherwise well-behaved senior dog. The only fixture in my yard is an old swing set that was present when I moved in. No pool (and no pools in the neighborhood).

{Describe all the people who live in your home, include names, ages and interests. For example, Mary Smith, 29, Enjoys cooking, dog training, gardening and running.:75}

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Myself

Willing to train children?
I do not have children myself. I occasionally spend time with my brother's family, and he has 3 children (ages 7, 5, and 3). They are good with dogs and have one of their own.

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Who is this dog for?

Marilyn and Justin

Why do you want a Pembroke?
After being around our friends and their dogs, my husband and I waited until we were ready to adopt our own and came across a corgi. We researched on the breed and found that they tend to be spirited and athletic and good with other pets. This fits our moderately active lifestyle. I feel encouraged as a pet owner with experience that I have the patience to train and stimulate this breed. Our home is always quiet so we would love to fill it with the voice of a corgi.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Daily backyard time- lots of fetch, supervised pool and sun time
Outside of home- parks for jogging, hiking, and socializing with people and pets
Home- lots of cuddling and Netflix, more fetch

Who is this dog for?

Both Asher and I (Amanda).

Why do you want a Pembroke?
First of all, I think Corgis are gorgeous. I know that they are loyal and love to work on something/do something productive. Unfortunately, I've had no experience with corgis, however I have read a lot of books and have done research online.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I would like to go for jogs/walks with them, play fetch, go swimming at lakes or beaches, travel up north to my parents so they can play with other dogs and if needed, train them.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I personally do not believe in rubbing the dogs nose in their pee/feces if they go in the house. There's multiple ways to handle disobedience/unwanted things like not giving them any attention, giving them positive reinforcement when they do something good, and having patience.

Discipline:
With the dogs I've had back when I lived with my parents, the method of discipline was to not give the dog any attention.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In our apartment. We don't mind the dog on the couch/chairs we have.

House dog

People at home during the day?
Usually not. About 90% of the time we one of us is home for lunch after 4 hours of work so we can let the dog out, etc.

Where would dog eat?
In our kitchen right next to the cats if possible. If not we can put him/her in a separate room.

Where would dog sleep:
We can get him/her a doggie bed or he/she can sleep in the bed with us.

Play & exercise:
Through toys and walks/jogs is how he/she would play. She'd get 2 walks/jogs a day for about 45 min each, she'd get about a half an hour on lunch to go outside and play with tennis balls, and while we aren't outside we'll be playing with toys inside.

How will you exercise your dog?
On leash

At the moment, due to coronavirus, I work from home, so the pup will also have me here during this crisis and eventually I plan to move in together with my girlfriend and her two cats later this year, so the puppy will be very well cared for. Who is this dog for?

This pembroke is for myself, a 22 year old man living in my own apartment and wanting a loving companion to spend time with, go on walks, and play with.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I love basically everything about Corgi's. I have actually never had the pleasure to meet one, but I love their personalities, the playfulness and creativeness of the dog really amazes me. I love their short little legs, they just make my heart melt. I was watching videos of Corgi's playing and I saw one flipping its bed upside down onto its head and running around like a bumper car, and I would be so happy to have my own and learn all of its quirks and favorite ways to play.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Well, it would be sleeping on my bed of course. And I would take him with me on regular walks, probably at least once or twice a day (with a little doggie coat if its cold outside!). He would be coming with me to visit my girlfriend and her family, along with their three dogs and three cats. We would play many things in the house, like tug of war, fetch, whatever he likes playing the most. I'd be giving him a constant supply of fresh toys and treats (but not too many treats), and I would be very constant with his training. I want to train him myself to be very good at following me and listening to "come" so that if he ever gets outside or off his leash, he doesn't run away.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Depends on the mistake, but I know from my research that when a dog barks, in order to train it to be quiet quicker you're supposed to ignore it and then it wont feel rewarded because talking to it or looking at it is a reward. So, again, depends on the mistake, but I would never physically punish the dog. I'm against that sort of thing.

Discipline:
I want to have a reward system, not a punishment system. So if the dog is bad, it gets nothing, but if its good, it gets a reward.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
With me. If I'm at work or at the grocery store, or something, then it would roam the apartment, or potentially stay with my girlfriend. Once me and my girlfriend move in together (planned for this year sometime) she will be able to watch him/her while I am away, but for now I will be here most of the time. [Please note that during the coronavirus situation my work has me working from home, so I will be home all the time until that is over.]

Who is this dog for?

The Pembroke is for Sarah Spears. Sarah would like to adopt the Pembroke to be a companion and to serve as an emotional support animal (ESA). Ideally, Sarah would like a dog that is 1-3 years old.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I would like to adopt a Pembroke because I believe they are the best breed for me at this point in my life. I am young and am an active individual. Pembrokes are very active and intelligent dogs, so my activity level would match the level of the dog. I am looking for a companion and emotional support animal. Pembrokes are very loyal to their owners & enjoy human companionship. This would be ideal for me. I want a companion that matches my activity level and need for companionship and comfort.

While I do not have any personal experience owning a Pembroke, I have friends and relatives who have owned them. I have experience owning small- medium size dogs as my family has had dachshunds ever since I was born and Britney spaniels.

I have done my research on Pembrokes and have read many articles from the American Kennel Club (AKC). I understand the challenges and responsibilities that come with owning this breed of dog.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Purdue University and West Lafayette provides a great environment for a dog! There is a local dog park (Shamrock Dog Park), the Purdue Horticulture Park, Happy Hollow Park & a local State Park to take the dog to for exercise. I am an avid walker and hiker & would love a dog companion for my walks around the neighborhood and in the park. I walk for at least an hour and a half per day.

Pembrokes are very smart animals. It is best to stimulate their intelligence by providing training & teaching them new skills. I would like to train my Pembroke (if possible) to engage in activities such as fetching and running.

In addition, the Purdue Veterinary School & Animal Hospital is several blocks away from my house. This community is world renown in its care and knowledge of animals. This would be a fantastic resource for information, guidance and health related information and services for my dog.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would handle the mistake with grace. It is not the dog's fault for making a mistake. I would first try to understand why the mistake was made, and work on correcting the behavior rather than punishing the behavior or mistake.

Discipline:
I think that basic obedience is important with a dog.
I would teach it to use its crate or kennel.
I would use positive reinforcement to reinforce behaviors that are appropriate. I would reward behaviors that are ideal and appropriate with small treats or praise. Pembrokes respond well to treats, as they are very food motivated. Another way of disciplining the dog is by being clear and consistent with expectations to avoid confusion. I would NEVER discipline the dog by being mean, harsh or abusive.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
The Pembroke would spend most of his or her time with me! While I have around 4 hours of classes per day, most of my time would be spend at home with my Pembroke. I would take the Pembroke for walks and enjoy the local neighborhood and environment around us. I would treat the Pembroke more like a family member than a pet.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
No. I am the only person to live at my place of living. Occasionally, my partner will come over and hang out.

Where would dog eat?
The corgi will eat inside of my house. The food will be located in a bowl in the kitchen of my home. The corgi would eat food based on its age, gender, and other health requirements. I would select a food that is recommended by my veterinarian and stick to the same brand of food for my corgi.

Where would dog sleep:
My adopted corgi will sleep wherever it wants to inside of my house. It can sleep with me in my bed, in its Kennel, on the couch or on a dog bed.

Play & exercise:
I am a young and active person. I enjoy walking, hiking and running. My partner and I walk for at least an hour and a half per day. I would be taking the corgi out on walks and to local parks and green spaces to run and play. The corgi will get several hours of exercise and play time per day. Purdue University and West Lafayette have SO many public parks, dog parks, green spaces and State Parks that I can take the corgi. I enjoy going out into the outdoors and hope to share this with my pet. If the corgi is interested in being around cattle (as they are herding dogs), I know several farmers with cattle that I can bring the corgi around.

We both grew up with pets and fully understand the responsibility of owning and caring for a pet. We understand that children may not understand how to respect a pet, and would like to teach our future child the importance of animal care.

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Current pets dog friendly?

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
If we decide to get another pet, we will slowly introduce the new pet to the adopted Pembroke. If they do not get along, we will try to figure out the reason why (food aggression, protective of space etc..) and accommodate for the needs of the Pembroke. We may talk to an animal behavior specialist to get the issue resolved.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Understand no guarantees?

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet?
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.
