Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
My husband and I | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I have had several (6 in all) Pembrokes in my 67 years, three of which were part of my adult life. I’ve got my husband hooked on them, too! After 60 years of knowing this breed, I guess you could say they have become a part of me. I can’t seem to go too long without needing one in my home. Anyone who has ever owned a corgi will understand this. We love the idea of giving a rescued dog a home, so we have two rescues, but rescued corgis are very difficult to find. The trait I find most appealing in corgis is their intelligence and self-confidence. I also find them very loving and playful with an almost quirky sense of humor. I love how they want to have a “job” and if one is not assigned to them, they will assign one to themselves. They are truly the breed of my heart!
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We take walks with our dogs and have plenty of toys for them to play with, either alone or with us. Being retired, we are with our dogs almost all the time. We rarely leave them alone for more than an hour or two.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
If I was present when the “mistake” happened, I would verbally correct. If I was not present when it happened, I would either ignore it or show it to my dog and verbally correct, depending on what the “mistake” was. My policy is that if I’m not there to see it being done, I’ve pretty much lost my chance to let my dog know what is right and what is wrong. That’s why I feel that if you want to live with a dog, you’ve got to be around most of the time.
Discipline: |
I usually use verbal cues, like a stern tone of voice or I may totally ignore him or her if I feel the bad behavior is a way to get attention. I also use positive reinforcement.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
With us in our home or, on nice days, outside in our huge, fenced-in yard.

House dog | ||||||

One of us is usually always home, and if we’re both gone, it is only for an hour or two.
Where would dog eat? |
In the kitchen with us | ||||||
Where would dog sleep: |
In his own bed | ||||||
Play & exercise: |
We have a very large fenced yard with plenty of trees for shade and room to run and play with each other. We take them for a walk twice a day around our three acres of property and sometimes around the neighborhood on leash. We especially like to let them run off leash around our property, and we train them as to the parameters by walking with them around the lot lines. We never let them run off leash outside of our fenced area.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We decided on a PWC because of their beauty, their personalities and their sizes. We want a small-medium dog because we live in a townhouse. We enjoy their goofiness and their loyalty to their owners. We like how they always want to be a part of whatever you're doing.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Socializing them with kids and other dogs as well as our house cats. Visiting dog parks and always going on car rides. We like to go camping and will go on outdoor adventures. If at home, we will go on walks and play catch outside.

Myself | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My family had a corgi mix, who has since passed, but I fell in love with the corgi features and tendencies he had. I went to petland and played with a corgi who was available and completely fell in love with him, he was just too expensive to purchase. I have done my research and am willing to work with my corgi as much as possible.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
myself | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
In the past, I had Australian shepherds and loved them for their loyalty and smartness. When I lost my last Aussie (at 16), I decided to research smaller breeds as I was retiring and wanting to travel more. Corgies showed very similar traits to those I loved about the Aussies and I started looking. I adopted my Corgi Zoey through Second Hand Hounds in Minneapolis – she was a retired breeder and gave me joy every day we were together.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I love to walk. I have a small hobby farm and my dogs are always with me during chores. I am now retired so traveling is important – RV camping – long term stops for camping so we get to know the neighbors and enjoy the dog parks along the way so dog friendly is important. I also have cats so thats an important relationship as well.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I have found that different dogs respond to different training methods. Some require repetition progressively through a strong "no". Others get it on the first "no" after being shown what is being asked of them.
Discipline: |
I prefer praising good behavior but will use a strong "NO" if needed
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
with me at home, traveling or doing chores outside

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Our family | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My 10 year old son fell in love with Corgi's 2 years ago and spread his love with our entire family. We adore their size, energy, and smarts. As my son said, "the dogs warm my heart every time I see them. My favorite type of Corgi is a tricolor Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Any type of Corgi makes me smile when I see them." We take adoption very seriously and have researched Corgi's over the past 2 years, including my son's 5th grade animal research project. We understand their exercise needs, their food needs, their heritage and history. We also believe it is important not only for a family to want a dog but to be a good fit for the breed. We believe our household is a terrific fit for a Corgi as we take daily walks, are always outside, have affection to give and the resources to care for a Corgi. We have also interviewed Corgi owners, attended local Corgi events and even a fun Corgi race charity event. We researched purchasing a Corgi but believe in rescuing animals who need a home. If selected this will be our 4th dog rescue in the last 20 years. We also rescued a cat many years ago.
My son has also attended several camps at the MN Humane Society where he has learned about caring for animals and their special needs. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
When we adopt a pet they become members of our family. Minimally the Corgi will receive daily walks, playtime, and a lot of affection. Depending on the character we will also attend dog socialization activities, trips to the neighborhood dog park, and playdates with friends and their dogs. We also like to hike and explore local, regional and state parks. The Corgi will join us for all of these activities and more.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
There are very few dog mistakes, mostly people mistakes. First it is important to check what is happening in the environment – have we changed the routine, given mixed messages, what is our mood etc. We think praising and reinforcing good behavior is best. We also seek to interrupt the behavior or just pause. Our current dog was a rescue from a puppy farm and needed tremendous care. We found the best training was love, affection, and when walking just stopping and reassuring when they were scared. We would take a tailored approach to our rescue Corgi too.
Discipline: |
We reinforce the behavior we want to see. We are consistent, prompt and use a short firm "no" or "stop" depending on if the dog comes to us with a known "pause" word. We do not believe in punishment. Each of our dogs has attended a series of training sessions with us after adoption so we can get to know one another and the hand signals/commands that work best for our family and dog.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
At home or outside with us. We have a relatively large home and find our pets like an area that is theirs. Our current dog likes a corner in the bedroom. Our former dog liked to be next to the family room couch. The dog before that liked to be on the couch next to us. I work from home and all of the dogs spend the day with me in my office. We will have a crate for the dog if they are crate trained and prefer to spend their time in the crate.

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes, generally. However there will be times when the dog will be home alone with our other pet. My children are older, almost 11 and almost 16. Between them, my husband and me we will be home most days. When we all need to be away the dog will be home alone from 9am – 3pm maximum.
Where would dog eat? |
The Corgi will have a dedicated eating area in our kitchen.
Where would dog sleep: |
We will tailor this to our Corgi's needs. All of our pets have slept on a dedicated spot on their own dog bed in a bedroom with a family member.
Play & exercise: |
Minimally the dog will be walked once a day, our current walking route is about 1 mile. The dog will also have shorter morning and evening walks around the block. We will have a lot of indoor play time and when the weather cooperates we will spend hours outside together, exploring, gardening, or relaxing.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
An active, older, married couple, the applicants named above. We’ve always had at least one dog, but our 16 year old Husky/Dane passed away last October. Morgan is adjunct faculty in the Communication and Creative Arts department at Purdue University Northwest, Tony works freelance as a photographer, including for the Northwest Indiana Times. We are home a lot, take long walks daily, have a fenced yard, and would love to share it with a new dog. Morgan fell in love with Corgis when she lived in Wales for a short while. We feel we would like to adopt 2 dogs at this time, one elder and one younger. It would be great if one of them was a Corgi or Corgi mix! We would like to meet a Corgi who would like a new family that includes 3 cats (all rescues, all lived with our dog), some fish, and a couple of birds. |
||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Inquisitiveness, outgoing personality, tenacity, loyalty, and independence all strike us very desirable traits in our human companions and we also admire it in our canine companions. Plus, animals that have a sense of humor, which it seems Corgis possess in a remarkable degree, are a source of great joy and wonder to us!
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Well, that depends on their age and temperament, but definitely we will pet them and play with them, ball toss, tug ball, frisbee, swimming, whatever they find enjoyable. We also provide toys for self-play. We are active, so if the dog is up for a daily walk or run, so are we. If they want to lounge on the couch, we’re down with that, as well. If they need obedience training, we will make that happen.
Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs? |
Yes | ||||||
Money for basic care? |
Yes | ||||||
Money for unforeseen medical expenses? |
Yes | ||||||
Willing to house train? |
Yes Willing to do formal training? Yes |
||||||
Do you have a veterinarian? |
Yes | ||||||
Vet contact info: |
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}
Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Don’t give attention to misguided behavior, time outs in crate or on dog bed. Take away toys. Use a different tone of voice to disrupt/stop unwanted behavior.
Discipline: |
Positive reinforcement: Reinforce wanted behaviors with verbal praise and/or ear rubs. If food motivated, treats in moderation.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
With us. Usually in the house or outside with us taking walks and/or playing in the yard. If a good car rider, they can accompany on trips to parks, beaches, etc.

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes. I teach one day a week, Tony is freelance and works intermittently during the week. The dog would be attended to pretty much 24/7 by us. If we both need to be away longer than 6 hours, we hire a dog walker.
Where would dog eat? |
In the house. We have a split level and will probably feed the dog downstairs, as the cats eat upstairs.
Where would dog sleep: |
In the house, in their crate, if they prefer that over a dog bed in our bedroom or another room.
Play & exercise: |

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Myself. I already have a corgi mix but she needs a friend. I also have 2 cats. I love the breed
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I love the size, the personalities, and easy temperment (my experience) of the corgis/mix I have owned. They are easy to train & play with. They are smart & fun to train. I fall in love wth every one I see.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Hopefully a new dog would give my dog a companion. She was a puppy mill breeder dog & she lacks knowing how to play. I do walk her & take her to the dog park but other dogs give up on her shyness but on occasion she will forget to shy & plays. She has good dog behavior, no aggression…more passive. I would love to share my home with another dog & also would like to give my dog a friend/companion. My cats are used to dogs. I am only looking for corgis or corgi mixes.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
My husband and myself. | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
They are one of the most intelligent and loving breeds of dogs I have ver met. Every corgi I have met (I have never had my own corgi friend) have been good natured and playful. My aunt had a corgi when I was young and she was my best friend when I was able to visit.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Yes, my current dog is very active and playful and would love a dog friend that she could play with all the time. We would go on long walks (I live right next to the 606 raised walking path and near Humboldt Park) as well as visit the many dog parks nearby. We own our home and have a fenced in yard and, while small like all chicago yards) it is definitely big enough for a dog to play and run in.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Use a low voice to indicate the behavior is bad and reinforce the correct behavior with treats.
Discipline: |
Use low voice and have them “got to bed” if they were caught in the act. If not, I might indicate displeasure with body language about the mess or bad behavior but they may not understand being disciplined later.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In our main floor and basement of the home. Our 2nd floor is gated so that the cats have a refuge away if they need it and we do not currently utilize a crate as our dog did not like to use it but we still have it for travel, etc.
