I (Maureen) have my own home w/4 older cats and like corgis because they generally get along w/cats. NO aggressive animals or w/"issues" (eg, separation anxiety). The corgi will likely be an only dog. I am big on animal rescue; I have rescued many cats. Mike is an experienced dog owner but the girl he put down today was his favorite; he'd had dachshunds before.

Who is this dog for?

This corgi is primarily for Mike; I (Maureen) live w/Mike much of the time. Mike had to put his corgi down today and will be ready to adopt another in a couple months. It is impt for him to walk for exercise & he'd been walking his corgi for 10 yrs; he knows it will feel weird come spring not to have a dog beside him. Mike has a recreational property on 7 acres; I have 2/3 acre on the edge of town. There trails by our homes. This will be a well-cared for and loved dog. I believe in rescue adoptions.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Mike loves Pembroke Welsh Corgis. I do, too. He loves how they look and move; he loves the "tractor pull" of their walk. We both appreciate how they can't get up on counters. They are generally gentle and non-aggressive, even if a bit "mouthy". I recently got back from the hosp and the corgi watched over me as part of her "herd", day and night.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We like to go for walks, in the town and on hiking trails. I think it's a shame so many people leave dogs penned up in their yards. The corgi would go to camp (the recreational property) w/Mike and there is a life jacket so she can go boating if she wants. Under no circumstances would this dog be tied up, tied out or left alone for long periods, although it could stay home or accompany Mike to a job site when he's working & I'm at my place w/my cats doing studio work.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
With gentle discipline. You always use positive reinforcement of the good action you want to reinforce, you never punish and certainly never hit any animal! Corgis are very intelligent and Mike said it only took one afternoon to house train his corgi. She was a "rescue" of sorts from a breeder; she'd been returned because her ears didn't stand up and was terrified of bicycles and traffic. It seems her former owner had run her alongside while taking daily bike rides in traffic. Can you imagine?

Discipline:
You tell a dog "NO" very clearly when the action is not good; you don't tolerate showing of teeth or any behaviors that tend toward being aggressive. Mike only had to be quite firm like that a couple times w/his corgi over the full 10 yrs.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Our corgi spent a lot of time at home w/us but would also accompany Mike on rides to lock jobs across the area; he would walk her as soon as the job ended, in parks, on streets, along Lake Superior, etc. She accompanied Mike to camp and would stay there as long as he did, but she actually preferred to be home. When she was young and Mike ran a bldg supply store, she came to work every day and greeted customers. She loved to come to my place and walk the nearby wooded trails on her leash.

House dog

People at home during the day?
Mike is only on the job ~15 hrs/wk. He is 66 and will be fully retired sometime in the next 10 yrs.

Where would dog eat?
She ate her dry food in the small hallway betw the family rm and downstairs BA. She also ate treats in the kitchen and family room; she liked to travel around w/her treats and eat them in bits and pieces over time.

Where would dog sleep:
The corgi slept in the BA. She preferred to sleep on a nest of clothes in a corner and sometimes on the blanket of her original crate; the crate was used as a resting spot she could return to when she wanted to get away from the activity of the store when she was young and worked as a "greeter".

Play & exercise:
Every day she would be run w/a laser in Mike's yard and taken for walks on a leash, weather permitting, unless she is at camp and taken for hikes there, also on a leash.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
Mike's fence is chain-link. There are two gates, one to the garage and on to the front yard. They were kept closed at all times unless in active use; the corgi was never allowed to wander into traffic or harm's way.

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Mike Tonkin

Willing to train children?
No children are in this home. Any child who would visit would certainly be supervised; kids need to learn how to treat animals properly.

NOTE: R/QUESTNS BELOW: Mike has allergies to some animals but can tell right away if one exists. He had no problem w/his corgi. R/my 4 cats, they live only at my house now but a cat still may be alive if/when I move in w/Mike in the far future.

Any allergies?

One or more family members might be allergic to dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Yes. Note that these cats are old and may not even be alive by the time I consider moving in to Mike's house; if he moves into mine, there are ways we can separate the floors easily so that the cats have the upstairs to themselves and our BR will be downstairs.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Unless I catch the dog in the act, I would reinforce good behaviors and entice with healthy treats. If caught in act, I would say No, divert attention, then replace with a good option of behavior.

Discipline:
Reinforcement of good behaviors. Avoid excessive attention when they need to be disciplined.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
During the spring and summer months we would be in the back yard playing.

Who is this dog for?

Our Corgi dog, Buster, passed away last August from lymphoma. He has been truly missed. This new Corgi will be for our home.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We had a Corgi, previous to our Buster, and both have since passed away. My brother and his family have two Corgis, with a previous Corgi. They motivated us to look into this breed.

As it would be an emotional support animal, I am looking for a dog that's quite cuddly and affectionate, probably more on the laid back side. I will, however, obviously support the dog as well with all of its exercise needs. I can likely spend at least an hour each day exercising and playing with the dog.

Who is this dog for?

Just me. I live very close to family who the dog would likely be around a lot, but ultimately just for me. I am an experienced dog owner, though I've never owned a Corgi before. I'm looking to adopt a dog who would act as an emotional support animal.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have always loved how cute they are, but I didn't know much more about them. However, since I've been researching them more, I think it would be a pretty good match. They are just about the size I'm looking for, and I learned that you can build ramps over your stairs to make them more comfortable. I am willing and capable to accommodate those needs. I also learned in my research on emotional support animals that they are a popular breed for that because of their affectionate nature. I find their herding behavior very cute, and would love to have a dog friend that followed me all around the house. I also learned that they're very smart, so I could have lots of training possibilities. Just for fun, though, and just to stimulate them mentally. I'm definitely not interested in training for a competitive environment.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I live in the heart of downtown Traverse City, where there are lots of parks, dog parks, and sidewalks. I would take the dog on walks and to parks to play. I also have a small fenced in yard that the dog could play freely in. I would also love to just chill inside with my dog for cuddle time. The dog would be more than welcome to sleep on my bed with me, or a doggy bed if they're more comfortable there. My school housing has a very large backyard that leads into a forest. It's not near any roads and has lots of running around space (it is not fenced in, though).

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would immediately ensure that the dog knows that that particular behavior is bad by firmly saying "no", and then reinforce the good behavior by rewarding him after correcting the mistake.

Discipline:
Never yelling, just firm "no"s, and treats to reinforce good behavior.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Wherever they're most comfortable in my home. They do need to be crate trained for my school housing, so they would be in there while I'm not home. But of course they're free to roam while I'm home, which is most of the time. I can also have the crate in my primary address with the crate door open so they're free to go and please, if they like to relax or sleep in there.

Yes, I'm usually home. For both my classes and my job, I'm never gone for more than 4 hours at a time.

Probably in the kitchen.

Where would dog sleep:
They would be more than welcome to share my bed with me, but I would also buy them a doggy bed. Or they can really sleep wherever, I don't mind.

Play & exercise:
Regular trips to the park right across the street from me, the beach down the street if they so desire, walks on the sidewalk, the dog park a couple blocks from me, and regular playing in my yard or inside.

Who is this dog for?

Our family, which includes the two of us and our two daughters (almost 4 years old and 3 months old)

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We recently had to say goodbye to our Pembroke corgi, Sasquatch. She was just shy of 16 years old and had been part of our family since we adopted her at nine months from a rescue. We battled a combination of kidney disease and cancer, with surgery, chemo, radiation therapy and other treatments, but she finally succumbed to her disease. In true corgi form, she was strong, stubborn and loving up until the very end. She was a wonderful combination of energy and playfulness but would also just as readily snuggle up in bed or on the couch. She was very food motivated and would eat nonstop if we let her, so we were very mindful of diet to keep her fit. Sas was “talkative” as we know the breed can be, but this became part of the soundtrack of our house. We actually missed her barking as her condition began to worsen. Unfortunately she lacked early socialization as a puppy and was not friendly with other dogs, but we were able to manage as needed. We knew we couldn’t adopt a second corgi given her personality, but we have always known we would continue to have the breed in our family. We are also open to a bonded pair.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We would want our Pembroke to be a true member of the family. From walks and playing in the park to snuggling up together for bedtime stories with the girls. We live in the city but are surrounded by parks and often walk to the lakefront. We also like to get out of the city and go hiking.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We have always been positive reinforcement focused. Mistakes are mistakes so we do not discipline. Just make sure to praise/reward for desired behavior.

Discipline:
With our prior dog we sometimes needed to use a gentle but firm hold for her to calm if she became aggressive. Beyond this we again focused on removing/redirecting and positive reinforcement.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Sasquatch, our prior dog, had full rein of the house. We do believe in crate training for when we are not in the house, and the crate was the safe space (including from our toddler daughter at the time). While we both work, we have a full time nanny that also loves dogs. As a result, much of the day would be spent in the house/yard with human interaction.

Who is this dog for?

For me 🙂 I have always enjoyed corgis and have done lots of research into them. I am graduating soon and will be able to support (time, attention, and funds) and give a loving home to a corgi.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I want to adopt a corgi because I find them a very lovable breed of dogs. They are very happy, go-lucky dogs and always bring a smile to my face. I have grownup surrounded by dogs and my favorite was a corgi my family owned for 2 years. These dogs can always make me smile. I enjoy the big dog personality in a small package. I have done a lot of research into this breed because I want to give my future dog the best living situation I can. I have done research into diet, exercise, living style, training, and health problems that could arise. I also love the loyalty these dogs can provide.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
My Pembroke will be by my side as much as possible. I enjoy taking walks, running, and going for hikes, all of which they would join me for. I would like to be able to sit and cuddle with them after the day is ending. Furthermore, I enjoy camping and when I go they would come with me. I would also like for my Pembroke to be my companion and keep me company. They will help to create a home I enjoy going back to.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I plan on using positive reinforcement with my Pembroke and when mistakes happen I will use the would "no" as a cue to stop that behavior. I will not hit, harm, yell, or scream at my corgi. After catching the act of negative behavior, I will tell them "no" and then redirect to a positive behavior, followed by a reward for that behavior. By using positive reinforcement, I hope to encourage the good behaviors I wish to see.

Discipline:
I will use positive reinforcement and redirection. Also I will spend lots of time and use patience to help with training.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Most of their time will be spent by my side. I would like to allow them to free roam my apartment in my parents house. I also plan on walking/running, as well as playing outside (not in extreme temperatures or weather), in order to give them adequate exercise.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes. I will be living with my parents and one of my sisters. I will be working 3-4 night shifts a week and will be home during the day to care for them. On nights that I am at work, I have already discussed with my mom and sister to help me care for my Pembroke.

Where would dog eat?
My corgi will have a designated place for their food and water in my kitchen. This will be where I feed them meals and store their food. I will also have a water bowl in the bathroom and one outside.

Where would dog sleep:
My corgi will sleep with me either in my bed or next to my bed in their own bed. I will give them both options and they may choose their preference.

Play & exercise:
I plan on running with my dog after I wake up and going for walks around mid day and before going to sleep. Walks will include a trip to the park in my neighborhood where they can run off-leash once they understand the come command. After walks, I plan on playing with them in the yard by throwing toys or just chasing each other around. Another chance for play they corgi will have is with my parent's dogs. Both are very friendly and love to play with other dogs. This will give my corgi an opportunity to socialize and run with someone faster than myself. They will get a minimum of an hour and a half of exercise each day.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Also, there is garden in the back that grows fruits, veggies, and herbs along with other smaller flower gardens around the house. There are a few trees that provide shade. There is also an electric fence surrounding the house but I don't plan on using this feature.

Who is this dog for?

Our family. We have a 1.5 year old son and are eager to welcome a corgi addition!

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We were walking along the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis and saw the most adorable little dog prancing and it was a corgi puppy. While all puppies are adorable, she was different! We fell in love with this breed ever since and have done our research. We understand they are smart, tenacious, and need lots of attention!

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We have a dog park about 4 blocks from our home and a large backyard for activities! We have a one and a half year old son, Harrison, who loves animals and we are looking for a cute corgi butt of our own to add to our family.

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Do you have a veterinarian?

Yes

Vet contact info:

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We are all allowed mistakes, being patient and stern is an important combination. Having a young child we are learning and growing everyday in this aspect and have the patience to help correct behavior.

Discipline:
Bringing a new dog into our home will require work from all members of our family. We all have to be on the same page and gain respect from our Corgi by getting to know each other. We will set boundaries and bathroom/bedtime expectations right away. Physical abuse will never be the answer in our home.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
With us! We are choosing a Corgi to be apart of our family, not just a pet. Both myself and Brody work full time jobs, but I am able to work from home 2/week. While we are at work (no longer than 7 hours a day) we will start with one part of the house and work our way to allowing our Corgi full range and trust within the house while we are away.

People at home during the day?
4 out of the 7 business days there is someone in our home all day. The other 3 our Pembroke would be home alone for no more than 7 hours- split with an hour lunch in between.

In the dining room with us!

Where would dog sleep:
We would start with a crate until our adopted corgi is familiar and comfortable in our home then move to a dog bed in our room or wherever the corgi finds comfort.

We have a good size backyard and a dog park down the road. We love being outside and going on walks during the summer months and remain active for our corgi and our son!

Who is this dog for?

The both of us

Why do you want a Pembroke?
On top of having extensively researched the breed, every corgi we have interacted with 'in the wild' has been extremely friendly, and always brings a smile to our faces! Their butts looks like they're always wearing pants, which is adorable. On top of that, we have two close friends that own two corgis, so we have extensively interacted with them, and always have a good time playing.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Walking, running on the 606 trail, going to the local puppy play lot, snuggling, throwing toys around, going to dog-friendly restaurants/bars/patios, and have him or her interact with Pumpernickel (since he does better when another dog relatively his size is around).

Stern voice, but offer positive reinforcement for good behaviors
