 I love their personalities. I have done some research on this breed and I love them even more. I have wanted one for almost 3 years. It's been that long since my last rescued dog passed. He was a yellow lab/german shepard mix. He lived to be 14 yrs. old.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
 We like that corgis are smart and loyal dogs that know how to communicate with their owners. Our current dog “talks” to us, and we love it. . We. We also like the size of the breed. And, of course, they are adorable! We have done so considerable research on the breed before deciding it is a good dog to welcome into our home.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
 We would take him or her on walks, okay in our backyard, go to the local park where we like to play catch and frisbee with our current dog. We also like to take our dog to the beach and on walks with our friends’ dogs. We like to take our dog on car rides. Whatever we are doing, if it is dog friendly, our dog is welcome.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: 		Hard to say without knowing the specific mistake, but I would lead the dog over to the mistake (such as a house training mistake or a chewed shoe), show them dog the mistake and say “no” then show it a corrective measure, such as going outside or giving the dog a toy if it’s own.

 That depends on where the corgi wants to sleep. Our current dog sleeps on her bed in the family room and sometimes in my daughter’s room. The corgi would probably start out in our room on a dog bed or in a cage until we know it’s behavior, and then it would be able to decide where it would like to sleep. It would have the option of a cage and its own bed as well as different rooms of the house.

 We have a fenced in yard that we will play in with the corgi multiple times a day. We will take the corgi on walks several times a day. We will have indoor toys for the corgi to play with. We will be around the corgi all day long.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
 I grew up with a pembroke Welsh corgi (Sophie) and also rescued a pembroke Welsh corgi in 2012 whose name was Charlie. He passed away in 2018 from an inoperable brain tumor and after a few months I was ready to get another dog which is when we got Banjo, our 8 month old corgi. We are absolutely in love with the breed because of their amazing, big personalities. Having owned 3 corgis before I feel that I understand the breed well and what their needs are.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
 I have a large fenced in backyard where we play with our corgi and we also live in a very walkable neighbor close to a dog park where we like to bring Banjo. We also attend various corgi meet ups throughout the year in Grand Rapids. Trevor and I work from home regularly throughout the week so we are home with Banjo a lot and take him for frequent walks which he loves.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: 		We use simple cues and 1 word (“eh-eh”) to let Banjo know when we don’t like something he is doing (jumping up on people when they walk in the door, etc). We find this helps so he doesn’t get confused if we try too many different methods/words. We do not use any sort of physical punishment (swatting, rubbing his nose in an accident when he was being house trained, etc)

Discipline:
 Never physical, only verbal cues or hand cues. We believe it is important to keep commands simple.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
 We work from home pretty regularly so now that Banjo is house trained he basically has the run of the house when we are home but we always keep him near us because he is still a puppy and we know he can still get curious and get into things. When we leave he goes in his crate or we take him with us whenever safe/possible. The same would go fo another Pembroke in our home.

 Or corgi, Banjo, LOVES other dogs and would love to have another dog to play with. We also have a large fenced in backyard with a lot of room to run. We live in a neighborhood with many places to walk, including a dog park just 2-3 blocks away.

Who is this dog for?

 We are looking for a corgi to join our family! My girlfriend, Paige and I are both avid researchers and we have spent many hours researching dog breeds for both size and temperament to see which would match our activity level and lifestyle. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the right breed for us!

Why do you want a Pembroke?
 We have spent approximately 4 years researching dog breeds! We are both researchers by occupation and hobby. We researched through AKC, PWCCA, and various dog blogs. We also have found various instagram accounts and youtube videos that provided invaluable advice for owning, training, and caring for a corgi. We determined that the a Pembroke Welsh Corgi was the right dog for us through this extensive research. We knew we needed to wait until we were both financially and occupationally stable enough to introduce a dog into our home. From 2016 to 2019 I was preparing to apply to graduate programs and knew that a move and new lifestyle change would be hard for a dog. In August 2019 we moved to Iowa City to start my PhD program, and Paige got a job as a personal trainer and things will be stable here for the foreseeable future We feel that now is the right time to have a corgi join our family!

What we love about this breed is their intelligence, personality, size, and activity level. They are small, yet have a big personality! They love to be active, play, and love puzzles. We both grew up with animals, me with a dog I took a lead in training and we have met many corgi on walks and through neighbors. They are adorable and fun and we love the prospect of having on join our lives!


Activities planned with Pembroke:
 We are both active people, but we also appreciate down time! We have access to multiple dog parks close by and plan to take our Pembroke to the park regularly to socialize with other dogs, and we hope to meet other dog owners in the process! We plan to train our dog personally and through obedience classes. We both loved that our university provided therapy dogs to de-stress students during exam weeks and we are open to having our dog trained as a therapy dog. We love going on walks as it is, we will love it even more with a Pembroke. We love hikes, kayaking, and exploring new areas.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: 		First and foremost we will never be violent with our dog! We respect animals and we will handle misdeeds or mistakes respectfully and patiently. We will use a stern tone and point to the mistake. I don't want to associate the crate with a punishment if they will be spending time there during the day, but I will use positive reinforcement for good behavior to reinforce good rather than strictly punishing bad behavior. If the puppy is being destructive, they may be bored and we will introduce more puzzles to stimulate their mind. If they tantrum, we will actively ignore as to not reinforce this behavior.

Discipline:
 Stern tone, pointing to mistake. If the problem is aggression, I will gently hold the snout. Discipline has its place, but I will also actively reinforce good behavior rather than strictly pointing out and punishing bad behavior.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
 Our Pembroke will spend most of his or her time in our apartment/home. We will give him a morning walk, afternoon walk, and evening walk. There is plenty of green space, a fenced-in dog park, and nearby parks. It's a great place for a dog!

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: Our Pembroke will spend most of his or her time in our apartment/home. We will give him a morning walk, afternoon walk, and evening walk. There is plenty of green space, a fenced-in dog park, and nearby parks. It's a great place for a dog!

 We both have a flexible schedule. Paige as a personal trainer makes her own schedule and can without a doubt have periods of time in the middle of the day to be home with the dog. I also am able to work my schedule around to get into the office late or leave early. We have no doubt that we will be able to be home for the dog every few hours during the week. On weekends, we spend a lot of time at home.

Where would dog eat?
 The corgi will eat in the kitchen near the sink. We have space for a feeding mat. We are both passionate about cooking and will buy our corgi the highest quality food. We will also plan to make our corgi dog-safe, dog-focused food options based on scientific findings regarding best diets for dogs.

 We have multiple options for this! Most likely we will have a bed in the crate if the corgi would prefer that. Additionally we will have a second bed in the living room.

 Walks very often, taking him/her to the park often. When the weather is nice, many hikes. We also value mental exercise and will provide our dog with puzzles and brain teasers to keep them sharp.

 This Pembroke would be for myself and my family of a kitten named Mochi & a puppy named Stellaren.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
 I've been doing my breed research for my next canine companion and it seems that a Pembroke Welsh Corgi would best suit my lifestyle & my puppy's personality. She does better with dogs that are smaller, but not too small as she is 35lbs. I've met a few corgis & I just love their quirky personalities as it reminds me of my own dog. When I see her play with other dogs, I feel bad that I don't have another canine sibling for her to play with in our yard. I play with her, but I can tell she would rather have another dog to run with.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
 Stellaren & I go to the dog park about every other day and like to play an attempted game of fetch in the backyard. (attempted- because you can't expect Stella to bring the ball back to you.) I like to go some occasional trail hiking with my dog. (not the crazy, dedicated hikes. I like McDonald's too much). We will also travel to Michigan and North Dakata as my family is from there so road tripping is something that we also enjoy doing.

I am a very positive person and only want the best outcomes for my dogs. If he/she pees in the wrong spot, you clean it up & try to redirect them into the correct way. It takes many tries to get it right! (Rome wasn't built in a day!)

 I only do positive reinforcement with my dog (& that's the only way I know how). I have doing puppy obedience at Petco & PetSmart with Stellaren and we've been doing great with it. I plan on us to continue with classes as she goes into adulthood.  I live alone. I live walking distance to work so I would just run home to check on them. I have a webcam at home so I often check on my puppy to see what she's doing or talk to her (it has the capability for you to talk to them).  I have a good sized fenced in yard that is all grass. I don't have any pools or large obstructions in my yard. I do have a little in ground fire-pit. When I first bought my house, having a large yard & to get a fenced in yard was my priority. The house did not have a fence, so we got that up within the first week of moving in. We choose a shadow box style so that our dogs can see view through the fence for some neighborhood desensitizing to people walking by, scenery of woods, etc.

 I love their over-the-top personalities. Their stubbornness can be a turn-off to some, but I find it to be very endearing. I have loved corgis since I was a child. I went with my mom to visit one of her old sorority sisters, who had a corgi named Robert, and I have been in love with the breed ever since.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
 We would go on adventures and many walks, but would be sure to bring a doggie papoose for when their little legs inevitably get tired. We plan to go on a couple of camping trips a year as well. There will be lazy days hanging out at the house, but there is sizable fenced-in backyard anytime our corgi decides to get a case of the zoomies.
