Who is this dog for?

My family

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I love corgis. I love how playful they are and how they are smaller (I am used to bigger dogs) I have a friend who owns a corgi and I love her corgi. Her corgi is super playful and loves going on walks and socializing. I also love how her corgi will cuddle. I know that corgis need to be brushed everyday, and obviously they need all the other normal dog stuff.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I could take it on walks in my pasture, I could also sit with it and watch movies. I like tug-a-war, but if it doesn’t want to do that I am up for some fetch or cuddles.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
It really depends on what it did. I would probably scold it and tell it no, make sure it knows not to do it again.

Discipline:
I tell my dog no or bad dog. Sometimes I put my dog in a room, by himself to punish him, but that is only when he does really bad things.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In the house. Where ever, because I don’t kennel animals. When it wants to go outside I could let it out.

Our husky mix is a very active dog, we take her on 4 walks/day minimum, and spend a lot of time at our local off-leash dog parks. Not to say a corgi would have to keep up with her, but we don't spend a lot of time hanging out in the backyard!

Who is this dog for?

our family – the 2 of us, our 11-year-old husky mix rescue Mya, and 2 cats, Howard and Oz

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I grew up with corgis, and love them to pieces for their opinionated, talky selves. I love how they don't realize they are not the same size as the German Shepherd down the street, or that cats really don't want to be herded. I love them for their attitude! My sister currently has a Corgi and that has made me remember the good times with our family dogs and want one again.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We do a lot of hiking – the Ice Age National Scenic Trail here in Wisconsin, regular visits to state parks and forests, a week on Washington Island. Our dog Mya loves going to the dog parks around us, so we spend a lot of time at those (and have made some great human and canine friends there). Swimming in local lakes and streams.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Depends on the mistake. I would re-direct their attention to a more appropriate activity if possible. I would look to see what might have caused them to act that way – boredom, nervousness – and try to help them with that.

Discipline:
We don't have to discipline our current dog – she is perfect. She walks off-leash on voice command, returns to us when called 95% of the time. When we first got her as a rescue, she didn't know how to walk on a leash, so we took her to leash-training class where we discovered she is not motivated by treats, but by verbal rewards, so we use that technique mostly, telling her she's a good girl when she follows our commands. On the rare occasion where she hasn't listened well, I will reprimand her verbally, and then we try it again.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In the house.

House dog

People at home during the day?
We both have school-schedules, which means often there are free hours during the day for one of us to get home to take the dog for a walk. She is never alone in the house for more than 6 hours at a stretch, and usually it's more like 4 hours away.

Where would dog eat?
In the kitchen. There is a row of dishes for the various animals!

Where would dog sleep:
Wherever they would like! The bed gets crowded at times, but they make it work. Mya has her choice of dog beds, if she prefers not to be up on the people bed.

Play & exercise:
As mentioned above, we take our dog out for walks at least 4 times a day, and for longer adventures every weekend. We spend a LOT of time outside with her!

How will you exercise your dog?

Description of yard:

We live downtown, so our yard is small. The driveway takes up about half of the total space. We do not have a fence around the yard – the backyards of the neighbors on this side of our street form one large contiguous area used by children and chickens. Mya doesn't like being outside without one of us, so we don't leave her on a lead in the yard ever. Either one of us is with her there, or we are walking the neighborhood. (She refuses to use our yard to do her business!)

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?

Who is this dog for?

Myself

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I do love the breed. I had a Pembroke Welsh Corgi Mix (sheltie). She was very lovable, obedient and smart.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I am pretty active, go for walks as a form of exercise and try to do this as much as possible per week. Maybe train new tricks and make a point of playing with toys.
Also, I am very affectionate to my dogs, to praise daily and snuggle with.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would handle a mistake made by my Pembroke the same way to handle with a human error. If possible, show how to correct mistake.

Discipline:
Gentle and loving discipline. I believe dogs want to please their human friends and to discipline kindly (I found) works extremely well. I don't believe in disciplining an animal by striking them. I feel with changing the tone of your voice (not yelling) is an effective way to let our furry friends know what they did is not acceptable.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
I plan on keeping my Pembroke indoors 100% of the time, of course, potty breaks outside. I do not plan on using a dog cage.

My son is going to be 11 and has been researching the breed the last 6 months. He tells me all the fun facts, watches youtube videos, activity levels, how well they can be trained and thinks they are adorable. We do not know any Corgis personally but would love to meet one at least.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
You redirect and use certain commands. I would immediately sign up for a training just so we both get to know each other.

Discipline:
Well after going to training with Bella my dog now, the trainer suggested even if you have a crate anything over 30 seconds like a time out they won't know they did something wrong. Scolding is one way and works with our dog or raising your voice a tad to show dominance

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In the home, someone is always home. We do not crate our other dog.

Who is this dog for?

My husband and I would share this Corgi

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We recently lost our beloved 13 year old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Milo. We absolutely loved everything about his big personality and can't imagine having any other breed. We loved that he wanted to spend time with us, and would follow us around the house.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Milo loved to go for walks, play fetch and cuddle. We would love to have another Corgi to do some of these same things with.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Stay calm and try and understand why the mistake happened. We left our first dog home one time for an extended period of time and he tore up a whole stack of newspapers. We just picked up the mess and didn't make an issue of it. It wasn't his fault that he was left home alone for too long!

Discipline:
I think the best thing to do is distract them from the bad behavior and/or ignore it. Our Corgi barked very aggressively at us every time we sneezed. If we tried to talk to him to get him to quit, he usually barked more. If we ignored him, he usually quit after 2-3 barks.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In the house. We have had 3 dogs and they all roamed the house freely.

House dog

People at home during the day?
Sometimes. My husband works from home every Friday, and I work from home 1-2 days/week.

Where would dog eat?
We usually keep food and water dishes in the kitchen.

Where would dog sleep:
Our dogs have always slept in the bedroom with us. We would love if our new corgi would sleep in bed with us, but that would be something we would need to evaluate to see if he/she was comfortable with that.

Play & exercise:
I would say a minimum of an hour walk each night. That is what we have always done for our other dogs, and would continue that routine. We recently moved to a new house without a fence. We intend to fence in the yard in the summer to make 'outside' time easier. Milo was 13, so he was pretty content to lay outside on the patio, but we know a younger dog will need more exercise.

How will you exercise your dog?
On leash

Fenced yard?

No, I don’t have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Description of yard:

We live in a city, so it isn't a huge back yard. We do not have a pool or hot tub. We intend to put in a fence, but until then we would tie up our new corgi when he/she wants to go outside to take care of business.

We do not have any children living at home
