Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
The first answer to the question is going to be for Fonzi, our current Pembroke pup. The second answer to that question will be for my husband and I. We feel that Fonzi would enjoy having a playmate and we would love to add another furbaby to our home.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Fonzi is our first PWC, and it's been quiet the experience. They are such an intelligent breed and so eager to learn. We love the personality, so loving and playful and energetic, they don't miss a beat! We are just obsessed with our little guy. Maybe it's because we don't have children and he is our baby or simply because he has brought so much love and happiness into our home. Either way, it's just been great experience so far. We have done some research and with the help of our vet have been given some additional pointers on their needs. We understand that this breed was meant to herd, that they are working dogs and such and that they require lots of exercise. Constant training is good for them because they enjoy working. This breed becomes apart of your family in such a way that you can't imagine life without them.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We have a nice sized yard, so running and fetch and tug will definitely be on the list. It will be based on the needs of the dog, but hopefully he will be able to play in the yard with Fonzi. We will include walks and hopefully puppy play dates. We currently take Fonzi everywhere (within reason of course) and I tend to include the new guy in our outings.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
If caught in the act of the mistake it will result in a no, we don't do this and correcting the behavior with what is acceptable, being taken out to potty or given a chew instead of my trim! Then reward the behavior I approve.
Discipline: |
I believe in positive reinforcement training. When I say no they understand they did something I didn't approve of, so what better way to correct them by setting them up for success instead of making them fear me and making it worse. I've found this to be effective. If it gets to the point where he won't listen at all little down time in the crate and we will try again when we can focus. We don't reward bad behavior with attention. We hit the reset button on and start from the last point is success.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Depending on the needs and the training required. He will have a crate that will be used for potty training and sleeping and safety for when we are away from the house. But if we are inside so will the pup, if we are outside so will the pup. We currently have our pup only in his crate when we are sleeping and at work otherwise he is out all day running around. Eventually we want our pup to be able to not have a crate but we just aren't there yet. He's still very much a puppy. But again crate training has been a staple in our training process and it's been a great tool for teaching our pup all about the potty do's and dont's.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
YES. | ||||||
Where would dog eat? |
Hopefully the Purina One Smart Blend that we currently use. I say hopefully because we had to go through 3 brands of food before finding this one. Our pup didn't care for the other brands and it resulted in alot of mixing in canned goods and hand feeding and playing with it to make him eat but 9 time out of 10 he he hated it. Until we found this and now he just gobbles it down thank God.
Where would dog sleep: |
In his crate until we can be sure he won't hurt himself or destroy anything he's not supposed to and that he's fully potty trained so we don't have accidents in the house. But eventually he will have full roam of the house and a bed to lay in when he's not in the crate and more than likely in bed with his mom and dad!
Play & exercise: |
The little guy will have supervised outside time. We currently have a few 20 minute sessions of fetch because the little guy tires out quickly. We play alot of fetch and tug in the house and going on walks. Not to mention we have a basket full of toys that we leave on the floor for him to pick at. Our house looks as though we have children, TOYS EVERYWHERE.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
Willing to pick up dog waste? |
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.
Willing to use a crate? |
I have a partially fenced yard, we have a corner lot, so there is a fence that runs along the side the street side (right side) of the property and meets the neighbor's fence at the back of out property. The left side is unfenced between the neighbor and I, BUT I have placed up chicken wire all along that side to help keep our pup from running over there and getting away from us. There is an area of the front right side that is open, it's to the side entrance, that's the only area that concerns us. So our pup has never been out unsupervised since he can't be kept in. EVENTUALLY we will be fencing the yard completely, it's just something we are saving for, since we just bought the place in August 2019.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I would start them as a puppy and teach them the words “stop” and “no”. I would shake all bad behaviors from the beginning and introduce them to a crate through crate training, which would also give it a space to go when they are being disciplined.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Our family. There are 3 of us now at home, our daughter Payton and Tom and I. Our son, Blake, is a freshman at Purdue University and is at home during breaks and summer. We have had 2 Corgis during the past 20+ years and we just lost our last Corgi. It is very quiet in our home. Tom only wants a Corgi :). Tom works from home a lot and enjoys having a dog by his side. We also like to go on walks in our neighborhood (even in the cold!) Our daughter wants a pal in the house as it is quieter now. Someone to sit and watch movies with while Tom and I are out.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Our first Corgi we took home in 1995 – and had Corky the Corgi and then Arrow (like Arrow in Harry Nilsson's The Land of Point). We have loved our Corgi's before they became very popular. We know they SHED!!!!! Like A LOT. We have found our Corgi's to be very smart and easy to train and were able to teach them tricks. We love to take them on walks. We play chase around the house. Corky always wanted to be a puppy and sit on our lap. Arrow oddly enough LOVED water. We learned with Corky that they love food and so with Arrow we really stuck to keeping his weight in check not over feeding (but we still love to give treats). OH! We also know that they nudge you for constant attention and rub downs. So they get them. We boarded Arrow at a large farm like kennel where we knew he could go outside and run. We would do the same if/when we needed to board a new corgi.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We walk our dogs all the time. Tom misses going for an evening walk. I always did the early morning walk and we all did the in between. We could always tell when our dogs were bursting with engergy and would chase them around the house in circles. We have a park (large triangle of grass where people and their dogs gather) right across the street from our house. It would depend on a new dog and if they could be trained to listen and stay by us. But we would take Arrow over there and he would run around. If another dog came by they would play in the park until Arrow sat down and said he was done. I tried to train Arrow to fetch – it just wasn't his gig. We would time him on how fast he could destroy his Christmas toy presents from family. My daughter had started an instagram page – corgi_arrow_the_family_dog after friends kept asking us to have his own page. 3 years ago organically the 12 days of Christmas began on my facebook page dressing up Arrow. I don't think Corky would have ever gone for it.-HA! They all have their own personalities.

Sternly tell them no. Depending put in his/her crate but don't want to make the dog not like the crate.
Discipline: |
Same as above. Depends on what the dog did. If the dog did go to the bathroom in the house we would show the dog where they went and then bring the dog inside. Then when the dog did something right praise the dog for the good behavior. We learned after our first dog that jumped on people that with Arrow we turned away from him when he jumped and ignored him. He rarely jumped on people.

Tom is inside and out all day.. Many times he would take Arrow with him. Tom may leave around 11 in the morning but is in and out and then our daughter is home from school at 3. I am more sporatic in an out.
Where would dog eat? |
Depends on the dog. One of our dogs only ate when we were eating – like he was a person only to eat dinner when we did. Otherwise we kept the food in the mud room just off the kitchen.
Where would dog sleep: |
In our bedroom or in the mud room. We kennel trained our dogs in the beginning and then put the kennels away after they were trained.
Play & exercise: |
Lots of walks and then chasing around the house. They are little bullets! Our house has a fence on 3 sides but we would gate our drive way if a new dog would require as he/she would not be trained to stay with us or in the yard. We were lucky with our last dog. He stayed, yet he would still look at us and try to tip toe away but we watched him. We were in a different house with our first Corgi and had a fully fenced yard.

Fenced on three sides but we would put an electronic gate across our driveway if our new dog would require. So driveway and grass in back yard. A back and a front porch. We would probably put a gate to our front porch to keep the dog with us on the front porch where we sit a lot.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Kristen | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I love the breed for it's goofy personality. Not much personal experience with the breed and have done some research on the breed
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I have just started training for runs, so I would take it running with me. Potentially to dog parks (one is just around the corner from our apartment). At the end of the summer, the police department does a "dog paddle" at one of the pools and would take it to that if s/he enjoys water
Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs? |
Yes | ||||||
Money for basic care? |
Yes | ||||||
Money for unforeseen medical expenses? |
Yes | ||||||
Willing to house train? |
Yes Willing to do formal training? Yes |
||||||
Do you have a veterinarian? |

Vet contact info: |
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}
Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I have a friend who is a dog trainer so I will be working with her for baseline training
Discipline: |
I tend to keep the kennel as a comfort spot for the dog, but if it is misbehaving, I kenneled my prior dog. As mentioned above, I will be working with a friend to learn different methods of training/discipline
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
If it is not destructive, it would have free roam of the apartment. If it has destructive tenancies, it would be kenneled while myself and my boyfriend are at work (our schedules are offset, so it would typically only be 3-4 hours between us that it would be alone)

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
They would be an indoor dog. While I am at work, unless I am traveling, they would come to work with me.

Who is this dog for? |
It is for me. I love corgis and dogs in general.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Even though this would be my first dog as an adult I have dog-sitting many friends and co-workers' dogs over the past several years. I love corgis' smiles, their playfulness and their activity needs. I have dog sat a corgi for a long weekend and I always ask people about their corgi when I run into them. Yes, I've done extensive research on many dog breeds, especially the corgi.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I love to go for walks so I dream of having a lovely dog to go with me. I would also play with my corgi with balls & toys and also challenges with puzzles and things that to keep him/her active mentally. I would brush them and keep them healthy by taking them to the vet on sche& groomer on schedule. I would teach them tricks – I used to be a preschool teacher, I am very patient! We will cuddle and go on adventures (long walks to new places). Feed her healthy food & cook her chicken livers. I eat really healthy and I maintain a very healthy lifestyle for myself. Also, find her a friend or two to play with often.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
This is a pet for us as a new member to our family
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We love the breed. They are smart, they are the perfect size, they are often active and lively, and they are so lovable.
We had a PWC named Coda from 2011 to 2018 (degenerative disease in his spinal column which we treated to relieve pain as long as we could). He was a 5 year old rescue when we adopted him. He was a natural in obedience training and he really liked having a job. Between the obedience training and herding a basketball around the backyard, he thrived and got the mental and physical activity that he needed. If he was not exercised enough or properly, he would lick a spot on his paw raw and would bark at the wind. |
