Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
This dog would be for my 17 year old son, Zach. My husband Pat and I are both supportive of his adopting a Corgi and we have had three dogs in the past that we raised from puppies and had as members of our family until they passed. We haven't had a dog for the past 12 years, but feel we are ready to add another canine member to our family.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We really like the breed. I had a neighbor who had one and it was a really nice dog. My nephew has one as well. We have had collies in the past and the corgi temperament seems similar to the collies. My son and husband are also very active (both are runners) and we think that a corgi would be a great companion for them. We are looking for a smaller dog, so thought a corgi would be a good fit.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We live on 10 acres, with a small fenced yard and then we have an invisible fence system that encloses about 3 acres beyond the fence. So our corgi could be out on the property with all of us doing our various activities. And as I said, my husband and son are runners and would take the corgi with. The corgi would also be a part of our family in our regular activities in our large house.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
We wouldn't punish the dog, but would try to correct the behavior as it is happening. We know it takes patience and lots of positive reinforcement to train a dog.
Discipline: |
Try to distract it, tell it "no", remove it from the area, reward good behavior. Try not to give it a command that you can't make it comply with (like telling it to "come" when it isn't on a leash, until it is well trained).
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
My husband and I do both work, but I only work 4 days a week. Our son is in high school currently, and he plans to attend a local vo-tech after high school, so he will be still living at home after he graduates. So initially when we aren't home, he will probably be crated or at least confined to the kitchen (depending on how he behaves). Once we know he can be trusted, he will be loose in the house. When we are home, he will be with us. Depending on how he likes being outside, we could leave him in the fenced or invisible fence controlled areas.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Three days a week there are. My husband does stop at home during the day (he is self-employed and doesn't work far away). My son will be home during the summer and he usually gets home from school early. I am off on Mondays and am hoping to be able to cut back even more next year.
Where would dog eat? |
In the kitchen. | ||||||
Where would dog sleep: |
We are thinking in my son's room, on his own dog bed (or in a kennel, if he isn't ready to be left out all night).
Play & exercise: |
My husband and son both run daily in the evening. And my son loves dogs and we would all play with him when we are home. A minimum of one hour exercise a day. And lots of playing.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

We live on 10 acres and we have a large yard. We do have a swimming pool, but would only allow the dog in that area with supervision, if that will be an issue. It was never an issue with our dogs in the past. Our collies hated the water and stayed away from the pool.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
The family. | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We rescued our previous Cardigan corgi who was 2 years old(?) when we got her. I/we love her and miss her. She was such a good dog and a wonderful addition to our family. I had a great experience with her breed. We had her for 7 wonderful years and 4 months. Yes I’ve done a lot of research on the breed. I know firsthand that they shed like crazy and they are herding dogs. Our Cardigan was not a barker.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Probable the kitchen and family room where we spend our majority of the time. Run of the house. Dog beds scattered in different rooms.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
My husband and I. | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My husband has been in love with Corgis his whole life. He has done research and loves everything about them. I have been looking for 2 years to get him one as a surprise. We've been prepared to add a dog into our family for about two years.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
My husband is very active and loves to go hiking and rock climbing out in nature. I love to go for walks and just spend time outside. Between the two of us, our dog would get a lot of outside time if that's what it likes. Our work schedules also don't always quite match up so a lot of the time there is one of us at the apartment, willing to spend time with a dog. On days where we both work, there is always somebody home by 3 as my work days end early in the evening. We are very close with our families and a few family members also have dogs who do frequent play dates. If this is something our dog would enjoy, we would do this every or every other week most likely.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
The first time it happens would be okay and we would let it slide. The second time it happened I'm sure we would discipline the dog and try to train them in how not to make this mistake again.
Discipline: |
We would be strict and then train them using a reward system. I have never trained a dog before, as all of my rescues in the past have been house trained, but my husband has trained a dog in the past and is willing to also take it to obedience training if nessicary.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Free roam of the house. We do have one bedroom that is closed off, as we have all of our reptiles in that room. The dog could be in this room when supervised as well, but it is mainly closed off because of the cats. The dog would have free roam everywhere else, and would be outside with supervision.

Most of the day, yes. My husband and I's schedules don't always match up so there is somebody home a lot of the time. When we do have a day where our schedules match up, there is always someone home by 3, as my work days are quite early.
Where would dog eat? |
In the kitchen, away from the cats dishes.
Where would dog sleep: |
Wherever he or she pleases. We would most likely have a water dish in our bedroom as well and let the dog sleep with us, but they can sleep wherever they want.
Play & exercise: |
Often! As I said earlier, my husband and I do like to be outside a lot. He likes to hike and rock climb (more adventurous out of us two), and I like to go for walks and relax outside. Between the two of us he or will get lots of outside time and exercise. My husband doesn't mind the winter either so he will still take the dog outside in winter, if it wants to. While we are home, we will also play with the dog. We are decently active people and don't him having an active corgi or one that just wants to cuddle up with us on the couch, because we love to do that too!
How will you exercise your dog? |
On leash | ||||||

No, I don’t have a fenced in yard.

Isaac Peterson, but we both will

Any allergies? |
No one is allergic. | ||||||

Current pets dog friendly? |
Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.
Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
Yes. Our kittens have been around dogs their whole lives and are friendly. Our rescue cat has neurological disabilities and gets overstimulated very easily, but she gets used to other animals quickly. It took roughly a month for her to get used to the kittens, and even when she is not kind to them her bark is worse then her bite. We also have 13 reptiles but they all stay in one room and will not be roaming the house and coming in contact with our dog or cats. When they are held or taken out, it is strictly in their room. |

Ages interested in: |
0 months – 1 year (we rarely get dogs in this age group), 1 year – 3 years, 3 years – 5 years | Gender preferred: |
Either a Male or a Female | Color preferred: |
Any color | Activity level: |
Couch Potato, Outgoing, Quiet, Playful, Energetic |
Other preferences: |
We do have a Husky, as well as a cat, so would definitely prefer a corgi that is okay with all animals. Our Husky is not fixed, so if a female seems a good fit, would prefer her be spayed. We are looking for a buddy for our Husky. He does great with little dogs, and my fiance and I decided we love the temperaments of the Corgi breed. We don't frequently have children in our home, but we do have a couple younger nieces and nephews that visit on occasion.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Myself (Shelby) and my fiance (Benjamin)
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We are looking for a buddy for our husky Thor. The big thing is he does great with small dogs vs dogs his size or bigger. From what we have researched, Corgi's have great temperaments as far as getting along with other animals, they are loving, yet playful. We are looking for an energy level that will match our Husky, which is (surprising I know) not high. He is a very medium energy dog, meaning he isn't always hyper like some huskies. He doesn't always have to be entertained, yet we have noticed as of lately, that we think he would do well with a friend to play with. For me personally, I am also looking for a smaller dog to be able to cuddle with in the evenings too, and from what I have seen in researching the breeds, Corgis can be very affectionate with people.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We are constantly taking Thor to our local dog park, so of course we would do that with any other dog we were to get too. We would take them both on walks and to local parks. Ben's mom also lives on a lake, so during the summers, we frequently go there to swim, and would be bringing the dogs with us. To be quite honest, we always try to do things that we can bring our dog with us to. This year we did a pooch plunge with our Husky that was hosted through our local dog park, we also love to go to dog friendly restaurants in the area.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I suppose I would need to know what you mean by mistake? I understand all dogs have accidents that happen. If it were to potty in the house, that would more so be a what did we do wrong, did we not let it outside in time, was it marking. With our Husky, he knows he is in trouble just based off of our tones of voice. Our Husky has chewed things up before, but again that's always something we have looked at as our mistake vs his. We accidentally left a door open and he was able to get to something, or we put something within his reach. We have also fostered a husky before and had to go through formal training as he was a resource guarder and we learned different techniques on how to train him. Changing voice tone, rewarding good behaviors with treats, and leash training.
Discipline: |
As said before, we typically just use lower voices and say bad boy or bad dog, then will not give attention for a couple minutes. When our Husky was a puppy, we would also put him in time outs in his cage from time to time, however now he no longer has a cage as we let him free roam while we are at work.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In our home and with us whenever we can take it places. If we are at work, at first I am sure we would have to have a crate or cage, which we would probably keep in our finished basement to start (that way it wouldn't be near our current dog to rile either of them up) Eventually we would definitely try to see how the dog could do without a crate of cage (Our current dog has access to our living/dining room and a side room while we are not home)

People at home during the day? |
My Fiance and I both are on second shift, so I work from 2pm-10pm and Ben works 3pm-11pm. I work 1 weekend a month, and Ben does not ever work weekends, so we are not home from those hours during the week, and then there is always someone home during the weekend.
Where would dog eat? |
We would have to make sure Thor and the Corgi could eat in the same place. If so, their bowls would be in our dining room. If they did have to stay separate, we would put the Corgis bowls in the kitchen.
Where would dog sleep: |
We allow Thor to sleep in the bedroom with us, so we would of course do the same with the Corgi. We do allow our animals in the bed with us, or if not, on the floor in the bedroom.
Play & exercise: |
Since we have a Husky, the Corgi would definitely get play, exercise with him, however, we are also very active with playing with toys too. Whenever we first get home, we tend to have playtime/when we first wake up. We go to the dog park pretty much every day, but if not, we do walks. I will say we aren't perfect, so it doesn't happen every day, but I would say 4 out of 5 days during the weekend, and we would definitely be active with the dogs on the weekend.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

No, I don’t have a fenced in yard.

Description of yard: |
We have a front yard and a back yard that we allow Thor in. We do not have a fence in either, so we use leads, and make sure we are keeping a constant eye on him. Eventually we do plan to fence in our backyard, next spring is our goal. We do have a pool, however it is an above ground one, so no access for a dog to get into it. There are plenty of trees in our backyard as well.
Household members: |
{Describe all the people who live in your home, include names, ages and interests. For example, Mary Smith, 29, Enjoys cooking, dog training, gardening and running.:75}

Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
May we do a home visit? |
Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.
Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care? |
It is honestly a shared responsibility between the two of us
Willing to train children? |
Most definitely! We do not have children of our own, but we have a baby niece and younger nephews. We honestly feel Thor is our child, so we definitely watch how he is being treated by the kids and say something if we have to.
Any allergies? |
No one is allergic. | ||||||
Current pets: |
{Please list and describe all of the pets that currently live in your home, including the name, type, age, sex and whether it is neutered. For example, Lenny, komodo dragon, 3 years old, not neutered.:80}
Current pets dog friendly? |
No, some of our current pets are not friendly toward dogs
Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
Most definitely. That is what ended up happening with the foster husky we had. We had intention of adopting him, but him and Thor had trouble. They got along fine, but we felt as if Thor wasn't happy or acting his normal self anymore, so with that, we kept the husky until we found a rescue for him to go to, and it would be the same with a corgi. We would never just up and abandon it, we would either find a rescue or another great home for it. Our cat Stella is on okay terms with our dog Thor. She neither likes, nor dislikes him. She will hiss and swat at him if he gets too close to her, however she has never injured him or purposefully went out of her way to attack him. She also has plenty of places to escape to if she needs.
Lifetime commitment to Pembroke? |
Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Understand no guarantees? |
Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.
Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet? |
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Myself | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Pembroke's have always held such a special place in my heart and I have always wanted to have one to love! Aside from their obvious adorable little noses and short little legs, I really love how smart, energetic, and vocal they are. Every Corgi I have met has had such a unique personality (usually a BIG one at that). They have such a confidence about them that is endearing. And they are the perfect size dog! I have done hours upon hours of research on the breed, and feel like we are the right active household to provide love and exercise for one of these sweet babies.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I would like to go to the park, go for walks, car rides, hiking up north! I truly want a best friend in my dog that I can take everywhere and do everything with!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I believe positive reinforcement is the only way to handle it. Rewards to encourage good behavior. They are animals, they make mistakes. No reason to get upset over it.
Discipline: |
Outside of saying "no" or "stop" I don't really believe in 'disciplining' a dog. You have to reward the positive behavior to encourage good behavior.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Either at home, the park, out and about.

House dog | ||||||

Yes, aside from 2 days a week, someone is home during the day all day.
Where would dog eat? |
From their bowl in the kitchen.
Where would dog sleep: |
Probably in my bed. If they wanted that. But if they preferred a crate, thats an option too.
Play & exercise: |
I have a fenced in yard that will allow the dog to play adequately (supervised of course) and be able to run. But aside from that, my brother has a 2 acre home we could visit, and if they liked the water, my parents live on the beach. There are so many options. As well as daily walks and playing fetch!

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
Yes. Absolutely. My cats did not get along with my parents new dog when we lived at home (he loved to chase them). But got along perfectly with our previous dog (she passed away at 14 years old). But with the right training, everyone gets along now when the dog comes to visit or vice versa.
