Who is this dog for?

Both applicants

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We've been interested in adopting a corgi for a while now, but haven't done so because of schedule conflicts. Of course, we still have times of being busy, but because there's more room for spending genuine time with the possible corgi now, we've decided to apply to adopt a corgi. We would like to have a companion be a part of our family, and decided a corgi would be fit.
We do not have experiences with the breed, but have done research on them. Although they are at risk for many health-related issues (such as hip dysplasia), it doesn't stop us from wanting to adopt. We are well aware of their instinct of being herding dogs and that being the possible reason why they bark so much at many things, such as neighbors entering apartment buildings, as well as how active they need to be on a daily basis. We are also aware of the breed's thick, double-layered coating and how often they shed throughout the year. Corgis are known to be big dogs in a small-dog body.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Daily walks and runs, training (especially during the corgi's early years of age), any form of exercise that requires mental stimulation to keep the dog active, spend time with people and other dogs to expose the dog to others besides the owners (that being us). Relaxing activies are just as important as being active. Spending time with the dog on the couch and relaxing is an activity that is important to do too!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Instead of shouting harsh words at the Pembroke, we would firmly say, "No" and have a tone that lets the dog know it's not something they should do. Avoid shouting, as this can possibly further excite the dog.

Discipline:
Patience is key. Treats and constant positive reinforcement are incredibly helpful as well when it comes to disciplining a dog. If the dog makes a mistake, try to catch them during the act and respond appropriately to that act. Be clear on letting the dog know they did a good job on whatever they were doing as well as being clear on letting them know what they did was wrong, or something that should not be done. House discipline and training is important, but going to professional training classes are important as well.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
The pembroke will probably be spending most of his or her time at home with family. However, it's also important that the Pembroke spends a decent amount of time both in the house as well as outdoors to maintain their health and to socially expose the dog to the outside world.

We will also be using play and exercise times to train the dog (before letting the dog outdoors to play, simple commands like "sit" and "stay," and giving him/her treats to let him/her know what he/she's doing is good. The dog will have more or less an hour a day to play and exercise.

Who is this dog for?

myself

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I would like to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi because based on the research I have found about them they would really match my lifestyle. I want a dog that is active and smart. I really like that they are a "big dog in a small dog body". Growing up I have always had lab mixes and it this time in my life I am looking for a smaller sized dog but would like to have a dog with the "big dog" personality.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I would take them for walks, to the dog park, and to the beach. I would be very active with them to insure they get enough exercise and of course are showered with love.

Who is this dog for?

Kyle and Annie

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We dog sat for Annie's brother who has a beagle/whippet mix. After seeing how poorly he got along with our cat due to his high prey drive, we started researching best dog breeds that get along with cats. Corgi's were at the top of almost every list. We want a medium sized dog, that gets along with cats, and has good energy and can be trained to listen to us. Corgi's ticked all these boxes. They are extremely cute, and we feel we can handle the grooming requirements of a corgi. A couple of Annie's coworkers have had corgis in the past and have had nothing but good things to say about them.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We would be taking the dog with us to play disc golf, the corgi would go through obedience training, and the corgi would be hiking with us when we go down to Red River Gorge to rock climb.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We would use positive reinforcement for behaviors, if the dog did something wrong, we would patiently wait until they do a command correctly and praise/give treats for the good behavior while ignoring the bad behavior.

Discipline:
We would use positive reinforcement instead of discipline. In Kyle's experience, it is better to ignore poor behaviors and teach the dog to look for positive feedback when they do something correctly. We would verbally tell the dog know and not give the dog attention if misbehaving so they know they have done something wrong. As corgis are people pleasers, I think our future corgi would respond well to this.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Our Pembroke would spend most of the time with us. We have a two story house with laminate hardwood on the bottom floor. We would crate train our dog, but as they became responsible, we could allow them to stay on the first floor with the top floor baby gated. At night they would sleep with us and we would probably help them up the stairs. Kyle and I both work full time, but Kyle works 5 minutes from home so he comes home for lunch everyday.

We would have a place in the kitchen for our corgi to eat.

Our corgi would probably sleep with us, but we would have multiple dog beds for them to sleep if they prefer that.

Play & exercise:
We are planning on fencing in our back yard (we just bought and moved into our house in January 2019). The corgi would be able to go out there. We also would take them on walks and to local dog parks. Our families also have dogs so we would take our corgi with us to play with their dogs. All the dogs are dog friendly and love having new dog friends to play with.

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
As long as the Pembroke does not harm our cat, we will be willing to work with them getting along. If the Pembroke puts our cat in harms way, we would have to give it back for the sake of both animals' well being. Our cat cannot live in fear and we do not want to have to constantly tell our dog no to attacking our cat.

Who is this dog for?

He or she would be our pet.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We love how smart and energetic Corgis are. They are an intelligent, fun, and funny breed. They aren't like other dog breeds in which the intelligence level is hit or miss (looking at you, Chihuahuas). They're curious, playful, loyal, and loving. A friend of ours has three Corgi/Corgi mixes, and they're all bright, playful, and great on leash. We also love that they don't drool and rarely snore. We like that they aren't too big, but they aren't so small that we'd trip over him. We LOVE Gatsby on YouTube and spend entirely too much time watching Corgi videos.
We know how important it is to socialize our Corgi and give him or her plenty of exercise for mental and physical fitness. Since they're low riders, it's important to exercise them regularly and maintain a consistent, healthy diet to stave off obesity. Our dog would ALWAYS be on leash when outside of our home/yard. We know that they're good, obedient dogs with proper training, but we prefer to keep our pets safe. We're also familiar with the hip, back, heart, and eye issues that are most commonly found in the breed.
If they're good enough for the Queen of England, they're good enough for us! ?

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We have a big backyard that we are in the process of fencing fully, so we would have a nice big, secure space for playing fetch. Mike is handy with tools, and we've thought about making an agility play area in part of the yard for our future dog.
We'd probably be "those pet parents" who would dress our baby up in all kinds of crazy costumes for holidays and events. We often have dinner parties, and the new addition to the family would have the chance to make friends with our friends and their pets, too. I (Jenni) am a big reader, so I'd love to have my Corgi within snuggling distance when I have a good book and a cup of tea. I enjoy running and Mike and I both like to walk, so our Corgi would get to go on lots of hikes on nearby trails. We live near a lot of farmland, and we often take longer walks on the country roads nearby.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
The most important thing is DO NOT YELL and DO NOT FREAK OUT. Depending on what the mistake is, if it is appropriate we would pick him or her up and remove him or her from the situation. Since they can read body language and facial expressions pretty well, we would show disappointment through those nonverbal means, and then redirect the dog with a calm voice and slow or steady movements.

Discipline:
I work with children, and just like with kids, it's much easier–and pleasant– to reinforce good behavior than to punish bad behavior. With dogs who haven't been caught in the act, you can't punish them because they don't know what they've done wrong. I've only ever had dogs that weigh <20 lbs., and I would often pick them up to take them away from what they were doing that was naughty. That's as close to physical discipline as it gets. Dogs are family. You don't hit, spank, kick, or yell at family. You can grumble and complain about them, but no violence! Basically, I wouldn't do anything I wouldn't want done to me; I've seen people use spray bottles, but I think that's mean. If the dog is chewing on somethings he or she isn't supposed to, I take it away, say "no," and give him or her a chew toy instead.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
We have a main floor and a basement. Our Corgi would spend most of his or her time on the main floor. He or she would probably be mostly in the living room, bedroom, and kitchen. We have a backyard for him or her to do business in and play. We are prepping currently (July 15, 2019) for getting our yard fully fenced. When we bought it, it had chain link on only three sides. We'll eventually get a six-foot wooden fence around the whole backyard. We're starting with the unfenced area as soon as we get the ok to dig our post holes!

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
During the summer, yes. During the school year, the longest the dog would be without people would be six hours.

Where would dog eat?
We have a spot in the kitchen all mapped out!

Where would dog sleep:
Our Corgi would sleep in our room, either on his/her own bed or with us in our bed. If our Corgi comes to us crate-trained and feels more comfortable sleeping in his or her "bedroom," we would, of course, be okay with that, too. If we get an older dog who has never been kenneled or crate-trained in a POSITIVE way, we will not do that.

Play & exercise:
Our Corgi would spend a lot of time helping me in the garden (since they're such good diggers!), and we'd play in the backyard a lot. We'd go for lots of walks as a family, and I would take him or her on runs with me, too. Since Mike and I usually walk about two-four miles a day, our dog would get that same workout, in addition to any games of tug/throw/fetch in the living room and backyard. I can only guess, but I think that would average out to two-three hours/day.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
As we said above, we currently have a standard four-foot chain-link on three sides. The two open parts on either side of the house are getting fenced with a six-foot wooden panel fencing this coming week, so we will be fully enclosed before July's end. We will eventually be replacing all of the chain-link with the six-foot wooden privacy fence, but that is a process we are not undertaking all at once.
