Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
My Partner | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
One of the reason I love Corgi is because Corgis are very cute, its short legs are the core factor of its cuteness. Another practical reason I find them to be a good choice is because corgis do not have long hairs and thick fur, so it’s easy to take care of and save time & cost of beauty.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
If the Pembroke makes a mistake, I would calmly walk over to him and firmly say NO. I would show disappointment in facial expression and in the tone of the voice. Depending on the weight of the dog I would stop the mistake in progress by picking him up.
Discipline: |
1. Address bad behavior immediately. 2. Reinforce good behaviors by giving treats. 3. By not being harsh but by giving positive punishment. For example say something to the dog that shows thay have done something wrong. |

we previously adopted a tri-color Corgi at age 4, and she was great! She lived to age 14, but suffered from DM her last couple years, and had to have a cart for her back legs. We're not sure we can go through the pain of this again.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
both of us | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We were able to adopt a 4 year-old pure-bred female Corgi, and just loved having her. We love how Corgis act like they are 'big dogs', even though they are small in stature. We love their playfulness, herding tendencies, fierce loyalty. But we also like how they can be a 'lap dog'. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Depending on the age, I'd love to get it involved in agility work and maybe herding. Lots of playing in a fenced in back yard, chasing a ball indoors during the winter. Regular walks as well.

Who is this dog for? |
This is for us the applicants
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I have always had an idea of my first dog to be a corgi and naming them Sora. I have done brief research on Corgi's and would go more into an in depth learning about them before adopting. No one I know owns a corgi but I have seen some on the streets and their owners have been very friendly letting me greet them. What I love the most about Corgi's is their voluptuous figure they arethe cutest.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Daily walks/runs around the house mostly and occasional park time alone with no other dogs around. We would take Sora on adventures out of state whenever or if possible. We also have parental's to watch him when we can't take him. Sora would never be alone and also have his brother Coby to keep him busy.

As calmly as can be we understand a new home can be a scary adjustment and you just have to show kindness no matte what. We are used to it with out other fur friend Coby.
Discipline: |
Rewards when they correctly or positively do a command. You have to redirect when mistakes happen and not reward that behavior. We learned positive reinforcement is a better way to train than use any time of physical force.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
With us or other members of the household, Coby our older poodle mix, and walks when we have the time to go outside.

People at home during the day? |
Yes. Francely's mom and brothers wife are stay at home mothers. Someone is always at the house.
Where would dog eat? |
Whatever is the healthier option our dog eats Rachael Ray's dog food right now. A chicken and veggie mix. I 100% would not feed my dog human food I am against it because I've seen dogs always beg for more once they've had it.
Where would dog sleep: |
In our bed and we have an extra room that will be dedicated to their play room so if they choose they can sleep there too.
Play & exercise: |
We have a backyard they can run around all they want! A park close by also , so there are choices. We have plenty of toys to play with to stay active.
How will you exercise your dog? |
On leash | ||||||
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
Willing to pick up dog waste? |

No swimming pools. Backyard has a fire pit about 3 feet high we rarely use that though. That is never unsupervised there is an adult controlling the fire pit. Front yard is small grass area not fenced but they wouldn't have the chance to run around there anyways without being on a leash.

We have two dogs currently – a boston terrier, and a dachshund/rat terrier. The boston is….well…a boston – so she's a couch potato. But the dachshund/rat who is a rescue is quite active. The boston is turning 2, and our dach/rat is turning 3.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Katherine Brown | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
So I do love the loaf butts, I won't lie. We have always had boston terriers but when I was a kid I volunteered at Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge and fell in love with the dachshund/corgi breeds. I suppose its the goofy run, but when I compare to the boston terrier the dachshund and the corgi breed are more active listeners. All three breeds can be incredibly stubborn – but having had a dachshund now I really love the attention span and the level of activity. Boston terriers are effectively coach potatoes comparatively – and I like the energy levels the dachshund/corgi breeds have since I love playing with my dogs.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I'm a huge fan of fetch – my dachshund is OBSESSED with it. We have a huge fenced-in backyard so thats the activity of choice so having a doggie who can keep up with my dachshund in both attention span and energy level would be so fun. (Okay my backyard might not be huge for a 100+ pound dog but for a short dog its huge lol.)
All of my dogs go through at least level one obedience…with my bostons thats always been sufficient. With our dachshund we ended up going through intermediate because she really excelled and enjoyed the additional training, and I would assume a corgi will probably end up following that route because they're known to be very intelligent. |

I suppose it depends? We've trained our dogs so that if they're doing something they shouldn't (like peeking in the garbage to grab something) we gasp really dramatically (like the kind of shocked gasp) and it grabs their attention to stop them. After a while they figure out that means the "Oh I got caught" sound.
Sometimes when our dogs get too excited in play they might not be listening or they might get too rough for our own comfort and at that point we just separate them and grab their attention with a snap of the fingers or a handclap. |

Discipline: |
We do timeouts. Honestly most effective thing we've ever done. When we rescued Belle (our former rat terrier) – she was almost 3 yrs old and was NOT trained. Pretty aggressive at times. We did consistent time outs with her (for like 2-4 minutes) and at one point she would bring her timeout bed around with her lol. The first year was a struggle bus but she ended up being a truly wonderful companion and family dog.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
My dogs have a very structured day, at least Monday through Friday. They get up at around 6:30am for their first potty run then usually hop back in someones bed until 7am. The boston will stay in bed (shocking) but my dachshund will pick out a toy and start playing or she'll grab a bone and chew it on the couch while my dad and I get ready for work (and my mom makes his coffee/lunch). I play with the dogs before I go to work and take them for a second potty run just before 7:30am. They eat breakfast at 7:45am and let my mom know if shes a minute late. My mom is home with the dogs – give or take an hour or two if she's going shopping, from 8am until 4pm. They go out 2-3 times in that time period. I come home at 4:20pm and take them outside and we play fetch or frisbee until my dad gets home at 5pm. They eat promptly at 5:15 – and they will let us know if we're late lol. Both of my current dogs are pretty loungey from post-dinner until 8pm when they get a second wind, and then we play until 9pm. They get their last potty break usually around 10:30pm (occasionally eeking closer to 11:30pm). The boston sleeps with my parents, and the dachshund sleeps with me (their choice – not ours lol). |

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes – mother is retired (but she's 61, former cop, in good health and can keep up no problem).
Where would dog eat? |
The dogs (which would include the corgi) eat in our laundry room (the laundry room is pretty big) and they eat have their own food bowls, by their own cages. The laundry room has a wifi-activated web camera (Wyze) in there with 180 degree and zoom which we all have on our phones so we can see if they're in there and what they're doing. |
||||||
Where would dog sleep: |
Our dogs sleep in our beds. They get the choice of which people's bed they want to sleep in, but all of our dogs thus far in our lives usually stick to the same bed each night. Currently, my dachshund sleeps with me and the boston sleeps with my parents (which is nice because the boston is a HOT TAMALE at night). If we're not home, dogs are in their cages and we have our web camera in there turned on. Both dogs currently zonk out within 15 minutes of realizing they're home alone lol.
I suppose it would be corgi's choice as to where she sleeps! She's got options lol. |
||||||
Play & exercise: |
Well she would be one of three dogs so I think she would have plenty of opportunity for day-time play with her siblings – my dachshund is especially active compared to the boston whose a lounger. My favorite part of my morning before I leave for work, and in the evening is playing with my dogs so I like to keep them engaged. My moms a good sport with the dachshund – shes not on the ground with her playing like I am, but when my dachshund brings her tennis balls to my mom, my mom knows its fetch time lol. My dachshund will drop the balls at your feet or hands and then bark at you until you throw it – so shes very adamant about when its time to play. |
||||||
How will you exercise your dog? |
Restrained to the yard | ||||||
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
Willing to pick up dog waste? |
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.
Willing to use a crate? |
Chain-link fence (standard for the city we live in) with cement posts. Encloses the entire yard. We have replaced the back (west side) fence entirely in 2018, which is the longest fenced side. It was replaced due to storm damage (a tree landed on it). Because dachshunds are known to dig (although mine does not really, surprisingly), we had the bottom line of our fence checked before she came in 2020 so ensure she would not be able to get underneath. Thankfully since then all of my neighbors have installed fences as well. It used to be if the dog (or a fox, raccoon) got under the fence they could continue through the neighbors yard to the other street, but now they would also have to get under or over their fence as well. |
||||||

Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
May we do a home visit? |
Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.
Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care? |
Katherine Brown | ||||||
Willing to train children? |
Yes – we have a niece turning 3 who comes twice a year for about a week. She's at the age now where shes learning how to gently pet (as opposed to that hand slapping pet some young kids do), and shes done well thus far. We've given the boston terrier free reign because shes very lovey dovey and does not nip (she has baby niblet teeth anyways) and she loves our niece. Our dachshund is getting better with children – when my niece was just turning 2 our dachshund was very confused at the size of my niece and would bark if she ran – so my dachshund is ALWAYS heavily supervised when my niece or a child is in the home (which, our trainer said, was typical for her breed lol).
Any allergies? |
No one is allergic. | ||||||

{Please list and describe all of the pets that currently live in your home, including the name, type, age, sex and whether it is neutered. For example, Lenny, komodo dragon, 3 years old, not neutered.:80}
Current pets dog friendly? |
Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.
Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
Yes – we've had rescues in the past who were not always immediately agreeable with either entering the home or other dogs entering the home after they've become comfortable. It happens – and it requires patience. Small dogs – big personalities. It comes with the territory.
Lifetime commitment to Pembroke? |
Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Keaghan (me) — a 24 year old who is very experienced with dogs and rescues. I regularly volunteer and animal shelter but I have always wanted a corgi.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My aunt has adopted 2 corgis and I instantly fell in love with them. I have always been a fan of "adopt don't shop" so adopting a corgi has been like a dream of mine. I think they are so adorable and from spending time with my aunts I know how sweet and funny these dogs can be. From research, I also know that if they aren't trained properly they can have temperament issues (as any dog can). I plan on training this corgi and most importantly loving him/her as well.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I would plan to walk him/her at least twice a day. If she/he were friendly with other dogs I would try to socialize him/her as much as possible with other dogs. I previously owned a dog that wasn't super friendly with other dogs so I am experienced with that but I would prefer a corgi that got along with other dogs. I would play inside with my corgi with toys and then also do training each day with him/her. I also live near the lake so during the summer I would take him/her to beach — even if they don't like the water we could just walk. I would spoil my corgi as well and maybe go for the occasional pup cup from Starbucks:)

I plan to work with a trainer so I would reach out to them for advice. If my corgi was chewing on my shoes or something I would say "no", grab the shoe and correct the behavior with a chew toy once he/she was calm and present.

I would use a bell for house training because this seemed to work in the past with my dogs. Ring the bell when you take them out to potty and eventually they start ringing it themselves. I would do a lot of corrective behavior techniques as well. I also plan to work on training with them each day for an hour. So just going through the commands "sit" and "stay" with training treats. I have also used a "clicker" in the past with other dogs so I would consider that as well. I also plan on working with a trainer so whatever advice they have for me I would listen. I plan to take him/her to obedience classes and puppy socialization classes.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
With me or In my apartment. I have a pretty spacious place. I would potentially crate train my corgi but whenever I am home I would leave my corgi out with me and (hopefully) work our way up to where I can leave him/her out while I'm gone. I do plan to take him/her with me most places I can.

Out of a dog dish that I would set up in my kitchen.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
For Grant & Hannah | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Because it’s been my wife Hannah’s dream to own a Corgi. We love that they are a small but active dog with lots of personality and that they are very adorable.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We are both avid runners and hikers. We would run around with the Corgi at parks and take our corgi on walks, hikes, and trips to National Parks. I would also love playing fetch. My wife and I are recently married (26 & 27) and are looking for a family dog. I grew up with German Shepards and my wife grew up with a Dachshund. This breed is a great compromise for what we both like in a dog.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
We would not use physical force but use gestures and the word no. We would also not reward those mistakes by not giving it a treat right after a mistake is made
Discipline: |
Structured reinforcement by giving treats when things are done correctly but taking away toys if something is done incorrectly
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Mixture of indoors and outdoors but mainly indoors during the weekdays. We would have a yard for it to play in

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
My companion | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My neighbor and friend has 2 pembroke welsh corgis. I have loved going on walks with them and going to the dog parks. I love that they enjoy running off their energy and playing with each other and the other dogs, or going on long walks (which I do on my own but would love a companion for) but are also ok with doing their own thing at times. They seem like the perfect mix of activity and homebody for me because I love to walk but also relax at home.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I love long walks and routinely go on 3-5 mile walks on my own so they would be a great companion. I also love to go to the dog parks. I also have a neighbor friend with Corgis that the dog could be friends with – we even share a side yard so we have even talked about how they could potentially share one large yard together.

Correcting and redirecting.
Discipline: |
Verbal cues of dissatisfaction, immediately pointing out the error so they are not confused, and if necessary separating them from the offending situation – crate or another room for a period of time.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Free in the home would be my preference but crate/yard as needed for the specific dog.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Primarily as a companion for my dad Jerry. 84 years young. Lost his chocolate Labrador to cancer 2 years ago and is ready for a new companion. Looking for a smaller dog that is as loyal and loveable as she was. Myself and my husband are my dad's daily helpers and will be the co owners of the new family member. We have always had larger dogs and look forward to adding a "big dog in a small package" to our family. |
||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We love that Corgi's are an active breed. That thy like to be with you and a part of things. I have always thought them to be a beautiful and adorable breed. Small but sturdy and ready for adventure!
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We would take long walks and hike the many trails in our area. We also love long car rides and some travel. We have spent some winters in Florida and plan to resume spending some time in a warmer climate again. Playing in the shallow water of one of our many area lakes on hot summer days is a certainty. We are looking for a dog that would be included in everything that we do. We are active outdoor people but also like to kick back and snuggle on the couch!

Discipline: |
Stern voice only. Absolutely no physical discipline.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
With my elderly father in his home. He misses the constant companionship of a dog best friend. We are 3 doors down in the same community and would be responsible for the majority of outdoor daily exercise.
