Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Lauren Tracy | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I would love to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi because I not only love dogs, but I believe a Pembroke Welsh Corgi breed is a wonderful companion. Although I have never owned a Pembroke Welsh Corgi myself, I have done research on how to best take care of them, and I have spoken to friends who do own a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. I have seen how loving they are, and how much happiness they bring to a home. I love that they are happy, sensitive companions, and they love to be a playful part of the family. I also believe I am equipped to take care of a Pembroke Welsh Corgi because I have researched the best way to take care of a corgi, and I am committed to continuing to learning more to be the best owner I can be.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I would love to take my corgi for walks around the numerous forest preserves, as well as socializing my corgi at the local dog park. My friends have dogs that love to be social, so I would like to set up a standing doggie play group with my friends and their dogs. It is important to me that my corgi stay active and moving when I am, and that would include bringing my corgi with me whenever I can.

Yes | ||||||
Money for unforeseen medical expenses? |
Yes | ||||||
Willing to house train? |

||||||

Vet contact info: |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
If the Pembroke makes a mistake, I will ignore the incorrect behavior (or mistake), and only reward the correct behavior with praise and an appropriate amount of treats. I feel this is the appropriate and best way to train a dog because it associates praise and positivity with the correct behavior.
Discipline: |
The method of discipline I use with a dog is repetition with associating praise and treats with the goal behavior. I believe it is important to establish trust and respect with my dog, and this leads to reinforcing positive behaviors as a method of discipline. This includes ignoring or trying not to acknowledge the incorrect behavior so that my dog learns that in order to gain the praise, my dog should listen to me and follow the commands that I give.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
My Pembroke would spend most of their time with me at my apartment.

I live alone, but I am able to come home during my lunch break in the middle of the work day since I live 10 minutes away from work.
Where would dog eat? |
My corgi would eat in a designated spot in the kitchen/dining room area of my apartment. I would make sure to set up a space large and centralized enough so that the corgi could access the food and water easily.
Where would dog sleep: |
My corgi would either sleep with me in my bed, or on a dog bed that I would buy. I would make sure that the dog bed would be located in a great spot for naps during the day, but I would love for my corgi to sleep with me at night!
Play & exercise: |
I will make sure to provide my corgi with multiple opportunities per day for play and exercise. I plan on morning and afternoon walks after work, as well as weekends playing with other dogs and going on fun adventures to make sure my corgi is living their best life. There are many places to walk on leash near my apartment, and there are areas for off-leash play as well. I am eager to give my corgi the best, most playful life I can.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Our family (Emorie and Andrew)
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Emorie grew up on a farm, where she was always surrounded by herding dogs. Most of the herding dogs she grew up with (e.g., Australian cattle dogs), are rather large and prefer more exercise (e.g., 2+ hours a day, fenced yard) than we can provide in an apartment. However, from this as well as her decade long training as a psychologist, Emorie learned a lot about reinforcement training that has made her confident on her ability to train with dogs.
Andrew grew up with multiple dogs in his home of smaller breed varieties. He loves that corgis are affectionate, medium to high energy, and rather silly looking. In adulthood, Andrew has frequently acted as a pet sitter for his families dogs and helped nearby relatives train two puppies adopted in the last several years. We have done extensive research on the breed. We are aware they shed, they can be vocal, they herd their people, they should not be allowed to jump on or off furniture, etc. We understand they require a lot of time and are demanding of attention. We fell in love with corgis when spending time with a good friend's corgi before we moved to Chicago. Since we moved here after Emorie finished her PhD, we have been waiting until we were able to (1) acquire a rental and (2) assure our work schedule to could provide enough at home time. Emorie and Andrew will continue to work in a hybrid schedule indefinitely. Moreover, on the small number of occasions where we both must physically report to work on the same day, Emorie has permission from her supervisor to bring her dog with her. We have created a list of curated toys, food, collar, leash, shampoo, bed, brushes, and more from advice from our friend who owns a corgi and extensive research on the internet. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Daily morning and evening weeks. When weather permits, evening or weekend trips to the nearby parks. We also hope to take any dog with us to visit family in the Oak Park area who have a large, fenced back yard and to visit Emorie's family on their farm. We are both very active, so we look forward to a corgi giving us even more reason to spend more time outdoors and active.
Indoors, we will get a number corgi friendly toys, bones, and more to play indoor games. |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
A key principle of behaviorism is that you punish a behavior, not the dog/person/etc. who performs it. As a result, how we respond to a mistake will vary on whether we observe it or not. If the dog chews the rug while we are gone, we can't punish the behavior unless we see them do it. In these instances, we will instead create deterrents, like blocking off the area, using treatment that makes the rug taste bad, etc. to prevent the undesired behavior. When the dog makes mistakes in our presence, we plan to use snaps and "no's" (Clapping isn't desirable because we don't want the sound of clapping, which is more common than snapping, to become associated with stopping whatever behavior they are engaged in). In some instances, such as if biting or scratching occurs during play, we will use negative punishment instead and stop the play session.
Discipline: |
Many of these we mention above, but our general approach would be to use a combination of the full positive x negative, punishment x reinforcement matrix. We will never strike our dog, with the possible but unlikely exception of violent, aggressive behavior that is not playful and could result in real harm to other animals or people (not furniture, objects, etc.). Instead, we'll use a spray bottle, snapping, "no", and absence of positive, desirable things as punishment, and reward with treats, pets, compliments, or absence of negative (e.g., remove barriers, etc.).
We plan to enroll any pet in training regardless, but should we struggle with teaching basic behaviors, we will enroll the dog in a more intensive professional training program that aligns with our values. |
||||||
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In our apartment, on walks. If/when they are ready, they would also spend time with our family in Oak Park and with our family in rural Missouri.

This would depend on the corgi's preference / training. If crate trained, in a crate. If not, with us (stairs to the bed) or in a dog bed in our room.
Play & exercise: |
We will walk our dog at least twice a day. We've previously established a morning and evening walk routine as a "commute" while we worked remotely and now hybridly. These are typically 15-20 minutes in the morning and 30-75 minutes in the evening. 2-3 times a week, these will be short jogs as well. When weather and time allows, this will additionally include park or dog park play time for socializing with other dogs, fetching, etc.

Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We want to adopt a corgi because we have had our hearts set on one for a long time. We love that they are smaller and more playful breed while having so much intelligence. We don’t have children and think a corgi would be the perfect fit for our lifestyle.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
We prefer humble discipline, meaning dogs will make mistakes but the importance of setting clear guidelines and following them while remaining humbly aware that mistakes will happen. For example we wouldn’t want to tell our corgi “no! Bad dog!” For trying to eat human food and then give them human food later as a treat. Create strict guidelines and stick to them.
Discipline: |
Going off of the previous question, setting boundaries is important. Telling dogs no, putting them in doggy time out in their crate are okay, but patience and trail and error are really important ways to ensure your pet trusts you.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In our house with us! Going wherever we go.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Applicant #1 – Myself | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My first reason to adopt has to do with the breed's popularity and the desire to give unwanted dogs a chance. The second reason is that with my full-time job starting with a puppy may currently not be ideal (Yes, I know I indicated I would take a puppy. Understand, it is not impossible for me to take care of one. Doing so, however, would not be my first choice, at present). My last dog was a Pembroke. Because of him I fell in love with the breed; their quirks and personality. I did extensive research on the breed before getting my last dog to ensure the breed fit my lifestyle.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I would like to acquire a CGC certificate and hopefully do some therapy work. Maybe get into some Agility in the area, if possible.

Yes | ||||||
Money for basic care? |
Yes | ||||||
Money for unforeseen medical expenses? |
Yes | ||||||

Vet contact info: |
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}
Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
With patience and understanding.
Discipline: |
Managing any dog is like managing a child. I believe in being firm, but fair. I have learned with my last dog (a Pembroke Corgi) that they know by the tone of your voice that they did something wrong. They want to please and when they don't they are not happy about it. Disciplinary action is only necessary when it is necessary. Most of the time, if you say 'No' and they know what that means and that is all you need to do. Since Corgi are known to be stubborn patience helps a lot too.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In the house. I intend to take the dog on long walks to help keep it mentally and physically healthy. Some play time, training and longer strolls will be outside as the weather allows. Where I live the weather is ever changing. We get dry heat and humidity in the summer along with thunderstorms (some can be severe); snow, sleet and ice storms in the winter; everything else in the spring and autumn.

|||||||
Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
If I get another dog in the future it will most likely be a young one or a puppy with the understanding that my adopted Corgi will not have any issues about sharing its space or people. Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
My family. We are a family of three. Mom, Dad and a girl who turns 6 on 6/18/2021.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Corgis are a breed that I've loved from afar for MANY years. Their friendly, outgoing personalities are a major draw for me. I love they they are playful and active and I also think they are a great size. My daughter is very interested in a playful dog as well. I also like that they are intelligent and train-able we would definitely have some rules for the Corgi to follow and training would be important to us (not jumping on visitors, staying off of certain furniture, listening to commands – not bolting into traffic…)
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Walks, jogging (maybe? if appropriate?). I run 2x a week and could definitely give the Corgi great exercise. We have a great front and back yard where we could play fetch and just generally chase and play with the corgi as well.

Discipline: |
Reward positive behavior with affection, treats, play, attention. Correct bad behavior when it occurs and BE CONSISTENT with the messages we are sending the dog.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Inside the house with us – in the family room while we play games, watch TV. I work from home so the dog could be in my home office with me as well.

We usually have a very quiet home. However, with any holiday or family birthdays, we are very likely to have a party of 15-22 people of all ages visit. All are dog lovers! But we would like to have a corgi that is not shy of gatherings and lots of love from strangers of all ages. (IF needed, however, we could separate the dog into a spare room away from the large gathering of strangers.) Nonetheless, it would just be ideal for it to get along with strangers. Guinness believes everyone coming to our house came just to play ball with him~!!!! He brings a ball to all~! And, most everyone is happy to play with him. 🙂

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Retired husband and wife.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We've owned a neutered male PWC [3 out of 4 red and white–one tri ] since 1988. As a waitress, some very kind customers invited me and my husband and our 10 year old son to their house to see some adorable PWC puppies. We feel instantly in LOVE. Their puppies were sold, but they were raising puppies for a breeder who was a very honorable veterinarian. She sold us Adam. He was a beautiful red and white male PWC puppy. His sisters were champions. We had Adam until he passed at 13 1/2 years old. Our second R&W PWC was a 1 1/2 year old rescue that lived to 10. Our 3rd was a shelter Tri- PWC (mix?) that was returned to the shelter after one year due to his need for more attention than could be given at the time that I returned to work. He would have been a wonderful agility dog who loved kids! Our recent R&W rescue was from a woman who recued PWC's from near Indianapolis, IN. She sold us a perfect match for our home~! Guinness was 3 years old when we got him and is now near 13 but is very ill and on meds for a tumor in his throat. He also has a very large tumor on his chest. It is so sad to think he probably will not be with us much longer. We love him with all our hearts~! And, will be very much open to loving another PWC that needs a home…..
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We play a lot of ball. We have a large grassy back yard and carpet the color of a R&W corgi hair that is made to take the wear and tear of a dog. (We have an auto robot rug sweeper and a super dog hair removing sweeper.) We play ball or squeaky toy games often~! We also take walks in the neighborhood and when weather permits love to hike the nearby parks. Short car rides are often (with weather conditions always in consideration if ever left in car!) Because we are retired almost all of our time will be spent with it~!!!! We are not far travelers….But have a son whom lives near to help for any reasons.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Say, "No." And, depend on what it did wrong. Take it outside if it goes to the bathroom inside. And, reward it when it goes outside. Often take it out…esp. just after a meal or long drink~! If it chews, take it away from what it is chewing and give it something it CAN chew…as a rawhide. We will spend a lot of time with it since we are retired so hope we can catch mistakes early and guide it in the right direction of behavior as quickly as possible. Treats and praise will reward good behavior.
Discipline: |
A keen eye to watch for wrong behavior and show it what it CAN do instead with rewards of kindness, praise, treats and better behavior such as playing ball or chewing a rawhide instead of chewing something it shouldn't or doing something it shouldn't.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Beside us. Only to go outside to go to the bathroom, play or enjoy the day, but NEVER to stay….ESP. when too hot! or cold…..

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes. 🙂 We are both retired.
Where would dog eat? |
In the dining room we have a Corgi pictured rug that holds the bowls for water and food.
Where would dog sleep: |
While it gets used to our house, in a kennel; but, anywhere it wants after we feel it can be trusted to be free during the night while we sleep. We have a special recliner that is for the dog. Most love to sleep in the bathroom where it is quiet, dark, and cool. Or by the air register in the dining room. Another favorite is by the front door's window. Usually they nap near us as we watch TV or are on the computer. Basicly, we have no limits. Our first slept under the bed and was between my feet as quickly as I put them to the floor. They are free.
Play & exercise: |
Every day we will spend time playing with them or giving them walks. Ours bring their toys to us and we play for as long as they want or we have time — which is lots.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
We shall have only one dog at a time….. Max is my 90 year old Mother's dog. Max gets along fine with most dogs. Nonetheless, we are careful to watch him. Max does not have to come to our house, but my Mother likes to take him every where she goes most of the time. Max visits often and gets along with Guinness usually fine. Other members of the family have larger dogs that do not visit our house. We have a sun room with a doggie door that can be used to separate the dogs if needed. The sun room is separated by a sliding glass door to keep an eye on the one in the sun room. Usually Max loves to be held. We welcome him.

Ourselves | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I have owned them in the past and they remain my absolute favorite breed. I find them to be affectionate, smart, and incredible companions. They're like a large dog in a small, more manageable body. I am fortunate that my current corgi mix has all the traits I love in the breed as well.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Depends on the mistake and depends on the training method that works best for the particular dog. I have found them to be stubborn, but also very sensitive. They don't like to disappoint and respond well to positive reinforcement. However, the "go lie down" timeout is a common method we have used for many of our dogs.
Discipline: |
Timeout as mentioned above, which is typically a short "go lie down." On occasion, it may be a timeout to a crate, but that is very rare. Also the stern "ah" to snap them out of whatever they might be doing. |
||||||
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
With us… typically in the house or wherever we might travel.
