Who is this dog for?

I am looking to adopt a corgi for myself. I am a single 26 year old living in a studio apartment. I have had two dogs in my life that sadly, eventually past away from old age. I had a small Yorkie to a 150 Lbs Newfoundland so I understand the importance of training and keeping a dog active for their safety, the safety of others, and their overall health.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have done research on the breed and understand their active and “barkative” nature. From the research I’ve done I feel like a corgi would be a good match to my own personality.

I have the time and resources to dedicate myself to the corgis training. I enjoy projects and would very much like to use my time for training.

In addition, my lifestyle would be conducive for a Corgi. I enjoy being active and healthy as opposed to going out at night. For this reason I would be able to take a Corgi with me on most outings.

I’ve had experience with different size and temperament in dogs. I know the importance of training and have had experience leash training dogs as well.

For these reasons (in addition to their cuteness) I know I would be able to love and give attention deserved to this bread.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I enjoy walking a lot and being outside as much as possible. I’m a firm believer that giving your dog proper exercise everyday will extend the life of a dog. Thankfully I work from home full time so multiple walks a day is possible. Occasionally I enjoy hiking, but the level of difficultly would affect if the dog would go.

From the research I’ve done, I’ve learned that Corgis are food motivated and can be trained using training treats. I like to fill up my day avoiding screen time and using my time for fun training and agility with a pup would be great (depending on the dog’s willingness).

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If I catch a dog making a mistake I try to either distract them with something else or use a firm, but not screaming noise that associates them with a bad behavior.

Discipline:
I use positive and negative associated words and sounds. Good behavior can be rewarded with a training treat or a positive word association. Mistakes or bad behavior would be a lower toned negatively associated word.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Most of the Corgi’s time would be spent either in my apartment or outside when possible. Winter weather would require proper gear for the dog, but those activities outside would not change so long as it’s safe for the dog.

I occasionally take road trips to see my parents. It would depend on the dog’s comfort level to either ride in the car with me or stay with a sitter.

House dog

People at home during the day?
No but now work from home (even after Covid).

Where would dog eat?
The corgi would eat in the apartment. Most likely near the kitchen.

Where would dog sleep:
The corgi would sleep in the apartment. I ideally would like to crate train, but if that’s not possible then I’m happy for the dog to sleep on the floor with a dog bed (I understand they shed).

Play & exercise:
I really would like to take the Corgi on a long walk in the morning and evening, with an afternoon walk in between. I live right next to Lincoln park so there are plenty of places for us to go.

I also enjoy the project of training or giving the Corgi opportunities to get out energy with training. From previous pets I’ve had I have found great toys and products designed to get energy out of dogs when they play.

I would love it if the dog was housetrained and ideally basic commands.
I dont have any other dogs at home but my family (parents, sisters [all adaults]) does and I would like to be able to bring my dog to family events with the other family dogs.
I'd ideally like a dog that I would be able to have as an ESA dog that I could have with me on flights back to NJ once or twice a year.
I'd also like the dog to be okay if we went for car rides.

Who is this dog for?

Marissa Sbrilli

Why do you want a Pembroke?
The breed is a good fit for energy level (energetic enough to hang outside and go on walks/maybe low key "hikes" with me) and disposition. The size is perfect and similar to what I have had in the past. I like that they are smart and are easily trained. I have not owned a corgi myself but I had a roommate with a corgi and plenty of friends with them. I appreciate that they are very sociable dogs (in my experience). I like dogs that are love sponges and are interested in my loving up on them!

Activities planned with Pembroke:
walks, low key hikes (i.e., the Illinois version of hikes – so nothing steep/treacherous). We would play with toys in the house and bakyard (on a lead with me). During th day, the dog with be with me in the house and I would be happy to have the pyup at my feet or lap as I work so I could keep spoiling the little nugget.

We recently lost our third Corgi, an eleven year old male that we adopted only a year and a half ago. He had serious spinal disease of which we were not aware. He had two surgeries, two extensive rehabs, and months of PT and acupuncture. In January he ruptured a disk for the third time, was completely paraplegic and in terrible pain. We had to euthanize him. We loved him so very much and the void is huge. That's why I didn't check the older age categories. We also would want to know his or her health history.

Who is this dog for?

My husband and me.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Yes. Prior to Rufi (2010-2021) (please see what I just wrote), we had Maki (2002-2017) and Raquel (2004-2019), half sib Pembrokes. It's hard to describe now much we love Corgis. Yes, we've researched them a lot. We know how busy, demanding and "naughty" they are.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We live part time in Iowa City with a fenced in back yard, and part time at our farm near the Quad Cities. Our other Corgis loved the farm. In town we walked them all the time and took them to parks.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Constructive discipline, positive reinforcement, rewards. We have never struck an animal in our lives.

Discipline:
Vocal (not yelling), "time-out", treats and praise. Never physical punishment.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
She would always be with us since we're retired and would travel to and from our home in Iowa City and the farm in Scott County.

People at home during the day?
Yes, always.

Where would dog eat?
In the kitchen.

Where would dog sleep:
In his or her bed or kennel. Maki and Raquel never had back issues but Rufi died of spinal/disk disease, so we are very mindful of their backs and orthopedic makeup. If they went upstairs, we'd carry them.

Play & exercise:
Farm, parks, neighborhood walks.
