Why do you want a Pembroke?
(note- it would take forever to list all of the dogs I have do/ever owned. I have bred Newfoundlands & a litter of Corgis. I also worked with rescue groups and over the years have had many rescues that I fostered and several that I kept, etc) I got my first Corgi back in the 90's from Bob & Adrienne Saffel with a cownership. After breeding Ribbon from the contract I kept a male puppy, Reebok. He did carting and TDI work with my male newfie. My daughter who acutally coowned with the Saffels and I , after Ribbons passed, ended up with a rescue corgi that came into the vet hospital that i worked at, my son currently has a 2 yr corgi that I babysat for when he was a puppy so I could housebreak him…i would love to get involved with TDI work and carting again with a corgi

Who is this dog for?

Both of us. We miss our baby so much. She was an 11yo rescue when we got her and passed away a month ago at almost 16yo, of a brain tumor.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We are absolutely addicted to them! This will be our third Pembroke and we are pretty much decided that we never want to be without one. We had our first one, Caedi, from a puppy until she passed away due to cancer at age 12. Our second corgi, Ein, was an 11yo rescue that came directly to us from the previous family, due to them moving to China and not wanting to subject her to the long quarantine. She rescued us as we were so heartbroken over the loss of Caedi. We just had Ein put to sleep after she was suffering from major convulsions that the vet hospital said were probably due to a brain tumor. Our lives are so empty without a corgi. This is the first Christmas in 17 years that we did not share with a corgi…

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Lots of walking. We live a block from a city owned lakefront park, where our corgis have been issued special passes to chase the geese. That is also where we keep our 35’ sailboat that we sail and cruise around the Great Lakes. We also kayak. And we have a place in Florida that we drive to and spend a couple of months at, walking in the park and on the beach. We have a fenced back yard and we travel to a family cottage up north for them to run and swim.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
It depends on the mistake. We normally use a stern voice and them try to redirect with positive reinforcement.

Discipline:
We have used a clicker and treat for some behaviors, time out for some instances and yelping and ignoring for nipping.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
We almost never leave our dogs alone. We take them wherever we go, adjusting travel to always have our puppy with us. We are very familiar with pet friendly hotels, restaurants, stores and beaches.

Who is this dog for?

Myself

Why do you want a Pembroke?
My reasons for wanting to adopt a Corgi come from a variety of research and first hand experiences with the breed. As a high energy breed, Corgis are great companions for a highly active couple who enjoys long walks and hikes throughout Indianapolis. Additionally, Corgis are incredibly smart animals, which can be challenging but the rewards are exceptional loyalty and affection. Having dogsit for a neighbor during my college years who owned a corgi, I have witnessed first hand the large personality and vocal abilities.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Walking, Hiking, Doggy play dates at the Carmel Dog Park (membership-only dog park), Commands/tricks to encourage mental stimulation. Full fenced in yard for play time chasing balls/our other dog. Neighbors all have friendly dogs and fenced in yards as well and we frequently let the dogs play during nicer weather. Car rides and adventures beyond our city once COVID is over. We frequently leave for long weekends during warmer months and always take our current pup with us and plan dog-friendly trips.

Who is this dog for?

Myself—Carrie Babbe

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have been wanting another dog for a while and my sister has owned two corgis so I’ve fallen in love with this breed. I would like to adopt a dog for companionship, a walking partner, to increase the fun in my life and to provide a good home to a needy corgi. My experience with my sister’s corgis was with one very calm, smart, lovable but somewhat aloof yet good natured and loving corgi (who was a rescue) and now to her current high-energy, crazy smart, bossy, herding and equally loving dog. I’ve researched the breed and know how they need to be part of a family, are high energy and enjoy activities and walks and that they love to bark—especially when they want to play a game of catch or notice that the mailman is across the street. I know about health issues that arise and that they are prone to many serious issues like spinal cord diseases, hip problems, eye and lung issues. I’m prepared to deal with those problems as well as the issues from normal aging. I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to adopt a corgi and give her a loving, safe and fun-filled life.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Walking, biking riding (in a burley), visiting dog parks, obedience classes, riding in a boat and spending time with friends and family, etc. I’m an somewhat active person who enjoys being outside and on the go, so my dog will fully be part of my life. She will also have plenty of space to relax and have any quiet time that she needs.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Depends on what it is. Most likely I’d redirect her and reward the good behavior. If she had an accident inside the house and I see it happening, I would interrupt with a command like “outside” and then take her out to finish the job. If she had an accident I didn’t catch, I would take her outside and clean up the mess because that was probably my fault. If the dog is impulsive or jumping on people, I would train her to recognize the“wait” command so she didn’t jump on people. I’d also follow the commands recognized by the trainers in obedience classes. I would never use physical punishment such as striking them, denying them good or comfort or leaving them outside alone.

Discipline:
Distract her from bad behavior with “no” or a noise to get her attention and redirect her, maybe give her a timeout in her dog bed. After I tell her know, tell her to sit fir a bit so she calms down

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In my home—roaming freely since I work from home.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Just me.

Where would dog eat?
A high quality dog food in portions that are appropriate for her age and/or special health needs. There will be no table scraps. If the vet thinks it is acceptable for her, I would provide raw carrots or apples since I know corgis have appetites 🙂

Where would dog sleep:
In my bedroom on a dog bed. Initially, she I may use a safe, large in-home crate/kennel in my bedroom so she feels safe and is able to stay safe in my home during transition into her new home.

Play & exercise:
She will have daily walks supplemented with time at the dog park and helping me garden. We will also play in the house.

In spring, summer and fall, she will be outside with me about 3-4 hours (maybe more on wknds) a day. Winters in Iowa can be cold so outside will be for daily walks but more play inside.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I love and am interested in owning a corgi because of their protective nature and willingness to be together as a family. I am also interested because, according to my research, corgis respond well to training, which I plan on doing with my own. I also would like a corgi because they can be very active dogs, thus motivating me to maintain a healthy lifestyle for my family, my corgi, and myself. While being intensively active is not what I am looking for, I am looking for a dog with a personality and is very playful with others

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would learn how to properly respond to specific mistakes through obedience training to begin with. In the past, we have used time in the crate and well as rug time to respond to mistakes, while providing clear reinforcement for correct behaviors in the future.

Discipline:
At home, positive reinforcement methods will be used to help increased expected behaviors, while unwanted behaviors will result in no reinforcement or attention.

Who is this dog for?

For myself. After losing the last of my family of JRT’s I would like a slightly less active dog as I am just slightly less active myself.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Due to their rarity in the states 40 years ago, I bred JRTs (short legged and Parson Russell) and we frequently met and played with Corgis at horse shows. Just time to think about a little less busy dog after my last remaining JRT passed away recently at age 17.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Nature walks on property where I live, would be with me or a friend at all times. If possible, may go to see the horses but that would be if it is safe.

Again, prevent as much undesirable behavior as possible and reward positive behavior. Punishment has no place in training animals that are keenly intelligent.

Where would dog eat?
With me wherever I eat.

Where would dog sleep:
With me in my room. Probably in the bed with me.

Play & exercise:
Supervised play in a farm/country environment hopefully safely off leash while supervised. Most JRT’s are runners and were never allowed to be loose around other animals. Corgis seem more amenable to not going off when accompanied. No dog is ever allowed outside without supervision in my household.

Who is this dog for?

This dog would be a family dog for us.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
When I was 15 I got my fluffy pembroke welsh corgi puppy, Dewey. He was just the best dog! He was so much fun, goofy, lovable, friendly. I did dog training with him and competed in a few obedience shows with him when he was younger. And did some agility training as well. He lived to be 16. We had to put him down in September. And we'd just love to have another corgi in our lives.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We have a fenced in yard, so we'd let the dog play in the yard. Take the dog for walks around the neighborhood. Make sure the dog gets plenty of exercise, corgis definitely need that! I would definitely do some obedience training. And maybe even do some agility again.
