TEMPERAMENT
We’re looking for a dog that would be happy to go on a nature walk in a forest preserve and go out to the beach and play. We’re looking for a dog that is good with kids because we will be around children between the ages of 6 and 12 every few weeks.

CATS
It’s okay if the dog isn’t okay with cats, we don’t have a cat although the dog may once in a great while have the opportunity to be around a cat. Either way, it’s not a huge deal.

OTHER DOGS
There is an upstairs neighbor dog which is quite a large dog and other dogs in the neighborhood. We love going to the dog park so it would be amazing to have a dog who loves to play with other dogs.

LEASH TRAINING
We’re home most of the time and we understand how to leash train dogs.

COAT
Truly, I would love a corgi mixed with a pitbul or a corgi mixed with some type of hypo-allergenic or short haired dog. Our previous dog had an undercoat similar to a corgi and although I am very used to brushing them all the time and giving baths. It is a lot.

Who is this dog for?

We’re a married couple looking for a dog to give a good home to. We live in Rogers Park in a decent sized condo and we are home most of the time because of the type of work we do.

We go on walks and are used to caring for a dog. Our previous dog who was kind of like a fox hound, died a year ago after a long battle with cancer. He was a great pooch.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have had a lot of friends over the years with Corgis. They are so great. We are interested in this type of dog because of our lifestyle. We are home a lot and want an intelligent dog we can train and play with. We want a dog that has energy so we can take them out into parks, to beaches, and a corgi has the energy for that generally.

We have done a lot of research on the breed and understand the health issues they can have along with their general temperament.

We feel it really fits in line with what we can offer for a dog.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We want to run around the beach that’s down the street from us in Rogers Park. Go for walks in nature trails. Sometimes we go on hikes when on vacation out of town and it would be great to have a dog who is ready for that type of adventure.

We also did obedience classes with our previous dog and would do the same with our next.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Show the Pembroke what the mistake is immediately, but never using physical violence.

With quick stern language.

Discipline:
I tend to use a loud “No”. Our previous dog had issues trying to herd people, so we would need to be very watchful and say “No” when our previous dog was about to nip at someone’s heels.

Generally using a lot of treats for positive reinforcement training and showing more of what is good behavior to promote that compared to saying what’s bad.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Most of the Pembroke’s time would be inside of our condo in Rogers Park in Chicago.

We are home most of the time, even before the pandemic that was the case.

Although a few times a week we would go out to the beach or to a forest preserve to go for a longer walk and get exercise with the Pembroke.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, my wife and I.

Where would dog eat?
I generally use science diet, but I would research what the best healthy option would be for a diet for the corgi and go with that.

Where would dog sleep:
Most likely the corgi would end up sleeping on our bed or wherever they want in the house. We have multiple couches and comfy chairs for them to find their perfect spot.

We also would get a nice dog bed for them, so they will have an array of options.

Play & exercise:
Going to the dog beach with them, going to the beach down the street from us and figuring out what way they want to exercise. Whether that’s going after a ball, frisbee, or just general nature walks or hikes.

Playing would definitely be every day, but a session at the park or beach would maybe be a few times a week.

They would also be getting a lot of training from us indoors.

We have a front yard that’s not enclosed. It’s right where the side walk is, but has enough room to run around.

With our previous dog we would just go on walks, we would really stay in the yard in front of our building because there’s a park nearby we go to with a beach as well.

Who is this dog for?

Me, to have as a pet. I am an experienced dog owner (have had 3 dogs previously since they were puppies) who is enthusiastic about dogs and enjoys spending a lot of time outdoors and ensuring dogs get lots of exercise and play time!

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have always wanted to adopt a corgi. I love how intelligent they are, and how active. I am an active person, and the dog will match my lifestyle. I also think it is great how they are generally good with other dogs. I don't have any other dogs myself, nor do I have immediate plans to change this, but I have friends with dogs and live near a dog park. I would love to hang out with this corgi and play with them frequently! My cousins have two corgis who I have dog-sat for in the past, but I have never owned a corgi before myself (previous dogs include a golden doodle, shih tzu, jack Russell terrier).

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I take daily walks already, if not multiple, so I would definitely take my corgi with me. I also like to go hiking on the weekends, and would take my corgi. I love to swim in a family pool, or in lakes in the summer, and I would of course bring my corgi with me there as well. I would also socialize the corgi with other dogs based on their level of comfort. I have several close friends with dogs of various breeds and ages in the area to test out exposure, and also live near a dog park. And of course when it is a little colder and not as accessible to get outside, I will have plenty of toys to play with indoors.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
When my dog makes a mistake, I will give he or she an opportunity to succeed immediately after (if they are jumping or barking, ask them to lie down, for example). I will introduce new commands slowly and over time, making sure the dog understands what I want them to do fully.

Discipline:
Generally verbal discipline. I prefer to use rewards to train and reward positive behavior, rather than any kind of physical punishment. I will continuously work with the dog to teach commands and reward positive behavior, and ensure all needs are met (emotional, physical, intellectual) so discipline is less necessary.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
He or she would spend most of their time in my home, which is a 2 bedroom home in the city with a patio and small yard. I work from home, so I will be here. They would of course also spend plenty of time outside in my neighborhood. They may also spend a good amount of time at a family home in Minnesota that has a large fenced in yard with a pool and two other dogs that live there.

Yes, I work from home.

Where would dog eat?
In my kitchen with me

Where would dog sleep:
In my bedroom in a dog bed, crate, or my bed, depending on what works best for the corgi and what they feel most comfortable with.

Play & exercise:
I will take the corgi on multiple walks per day. I walk or jog at least 7 miles per day, and would bring the corgi on at least part of this, depending on their stamina and needs. I would play with the dog often as well indoors as well as throwing balls around in our small yard.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?

My husband and I.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have a corgi girl now and I wanted to get her a brother for a while. And after researching the breed more and finding out how they end up in different homes, We decided to adopt this time.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Run, throw balls at the park till shes nice and tired. Swimming at the lake during the summer, Play with toys at home. Play at work since I'm allowed to bring my dog to work at the pet store. She's gets puzzle games to keep her busy too.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I show them what they did and make sure to not raise my voice because dogs don't understand yelling. Positive ways

Discipline:
I dona SHH sound when my corgi is doing something she's not suppose to and she's listen. Never hit a dog. I think she's so smart now that she understands my language because sometimes I just talk to her and she listens.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
At home with me, or at work with me. If I have long shifts I have a trust worthy dog walker who comes to my store and walks my corgi just outside the grass for a while, and she loves him. If I know I'll be away from home for several hours my dog walker also comes to my apartment. But I'm almost always with my dog.

My fiancé and myself

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We have done research and we currently own a rescued welsh cardigan corgi mix. We’ve come to love the breed, they’re so intelligent and fun. We’ve had very good experiences with our corgi and would love to add to our family.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We go on lots of walks and hikes, she comes on vacation with us, watches movies with us, hangs out all day with us on weekends. Our dogs become part of the family.

We will try to train and help correct over time, we aren’t the type to be mad but rather try to help the dogs not only for us, but to help them live their best life

Discipline:
We give a firm “no” and point to the pen, we have our current dog go to the pen, but leave the door open. She must stay in the pen for a couple minutes until we invite her back out. If it is biting or jumping, we disengage and then reward good behavior with pets and happy tones

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In the house wherever they choose to hang out, typically in the living room area

Who is this dog for?

I will be retiring soon and would like to adopt another Corgi, as my 16 year old Corgi has passed away.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have owned 2 Corgi mixes previously (both are now deceased), and I currently own a Corgi mix. I find them to be very lovable, smart, and comical. They are a joy to be with. They entertain and love you, and I love the breed. I will always be a Corgi person, and I would like to adopt one that is in need of a home.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I like to go for walks. I go camping and hiking a lot in the summer, and go for walks in the winter.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
It depends on the mistake. If he is chewing on something that he shouldn't, I would take it away while telling him "no, bad dog". If he pottied in the house, I would tell him "no, bad dog" and put him outside. Corgis are smart. It doesn't take them very long to learn what you want, and they love to please you.

Discipline:
I scold them when they do something wrong. You do not have to physically hurt a dog to teach them right from wrong, and Corgis learn quickly.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
I will be retired soon, so my dog would spend its time with me wherever I go. Mostly we would go camping in the summer.

I have dog beds in my bedroom, so that is where my Corgi would sleep

Who is this dog for?

Myself! I’ve been suffering from a case of puppy fever for quite some time! I unfortunately have been scammed in the past and I’m trying to keep hope that I’ll finally meet the corgi of my dreams!

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I'm in love with how cute their little legs are and they've got so much personality! I'm not sure what research would be necessary, but I've been looking all over for my own and have been scammed before. At this point I almost want to give up looking, but I'm trying my best to keep my hopes up!

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Constant walks around the neighborhood. Play dates with my twin brother's dog and lots of cute adventures around together!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
With patience and understanding! Dogs are like furry babies and although emotionally intelligent, they don't know what's good or bad!

Discipline:
Scolding them appropriately, maybe a pat on the nose if they're being especially bad, and asking them to go in time-out when they know they've done something wrong.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Probably lounging around the apartment and looking for spots of warm sunlight to bask in.

Who is this dog for?

This pembroke will be my boyfriend and I's dog. (The two listed above).

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We love this breed in general. Besides being adorable we are have heard that this breed has a ton of personality and are generally very smart. We have also heard that Corgis can be very affectionate which is just what we're looking for!

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We love to go on walks and take our (past) pup out to dog friendly places when we eat! We are the type of people that want to take our dog everywhere and anywhere we go! We are very active and would love to frequently take our dog to the dog parks surrounding our home.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
See below*

Discipline:
With nipping, we would redirect any of that to a toy to gently let our pup know it's not okay to nip. We would also mirror our behavior off of the dog. If the dog doesn't do something that is okay, will will not give it attention in order to signify that whatever was done was out of line, then praise them when they're doing something right.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In our apartment with frequent walks and trips to the dog park. There are many around as well as one attached to our building

Who is this dog for?

For me. I am a single woman living in Chicago. I grew up with dogs, my former roommate had a dog, and I've found myself missing the companionship. I would be home with the dog a fair amount. I'm in the habit of going for a walk myself at least once a day, so it wouldn't be much of an adjustment to take the dog outside quite a bit. I thought now would be a good time to get a pet because I'm working from home (most likely for at least the next couple of months), and I'll be home all day while it's adjusting to a new home.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Based on what I've read and heard from others, I think the breed is a good fit for my living situation. I knew someone who had a couple of corgis and I thought they were incredibly sweet and fun.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Take him for walks, play, pet.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I'm a patient person and I understand that it takes time for a dog to learn things. If the Pembroke made a mistake, I would try giving the directive again using positive reinforcement.

Discipline:
I think positive reinforcement is the most successful training tool. I might use corrective commands, but I would never physically discipline a dog .

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In my apt and on walks in the surrounding neighborhood/parks.

House dog

People at home during the day?
For now, I am working from home, so I am home all day. I also have friends who work from home and could check on the dog if needed.

Where would dog eat?
In my home, most likely in the entryway.

Where would dog sleep:
In my home.

Play & exercise:
There are multiple dog parks near me that I could take my adopted corgi to. I also go for a walk at least once a day. If I had a dog, I would go for a walk in the morning, take it outside on my lunch break if possible, and make sure it got out at least once at night. If necessary, I would consider hiring a dog walker. I would also play with the corgi within my home.

How will you exercise your dog?
On leash
