Activities planned with Pembroke:
Walks, belly rubs, cuddle time…we would give her the love and care she needs.

Who is this dog for?

I am looking to adopt a corgi for myself

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have always had a soft spot for corgis and from my research they are independent dogs that can be very affectionate. From my interactions they are very loyal dogs that would make a great companion.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I would love to take the dog on walks, spend afternoons at the park, cuddle on the couch, and when I take car trip to visit family, bring him/her with me.

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Money for basic care?

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If the dog was acting out and had a lot of energy I would try to take him/her outside for a nice walk/jog, if it needed something to play with redirect him/her to an appropriate toy (and remove what it wasn't suppose to be playing with), and in other cases be firm but gentle when giving simple commands.

Discipline:
Firm commands, followed by positive reinforcement with either treats, toys, or affection when the dog follows command
Avoid giving affection/petting when misbehaving
Use something to get attention before correcting like whistling, clapping, gentle tug on leash, but never yelling or hitting

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Most time would be spent at home

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
no

Where would dog eat?
My family's dogs eat Acana and that seems to be what their vets recommend but I would want to know what food the dog currently eats.

Where would dog sleep:
Depending on what the dog currently uses to sleep either a dog bed or a crate

Play & exercise:
I would allow the dog to have plenty of safe toys to play with at home, even with me. I would take the dog on multiple daytime walks, to the park on weekends and occasionally after work, and would want to have him/her visit doggy daycare at least once or twice a week while I am at work so that he or she could socialize and get plenty of exercise.

How will you exercise your dog?
On leash

No, I don’t have a fenced in yard.

Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Who is this dog for?

We've been waiting a long time to have the right environment to welcome a corgi into our home and we finally do! Admittedly, we're new to being dog owners, but I can assure you, we are ready and for all of the right reasons. We are big supporters of the Cesar Millan school of dog training and will treat our future companion with the utmost respect and as an animal and dog first.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Corgis are such a noble breed and generally match our family's energy level. Of course, we were initially drawn to their "cute" and bright demeanor, but after more research and meeting a few sterling specimens, we've come to appreciate corgis as much more than an adorable face! Their reputation as enthusiastic herders, affectionate companions, and intelligent learners make them the perfect breed for us. Additionally, their compact size makes them particularly well-suited to our modest home.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Recognizing that corgis are best balanced when they have proper training, routines, and missions, we would maintain an appropriate regime for our companion. We would go on regular walks, and provide plenty of games and tasks to keep our corgi sharp and adequately active. We also recognize it's important for corgis to remain social, so we would have plenty of trips to the dog park and intentionally foster relationships with family and neighbor dogs.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If the mistake just happened, we would confidently (but carefully) note the undesirable behavior with a firm "tisk" sound and possibly a light nudge to let it know it is not the behavior we want. Then, after a short amount of time, we would encourage a positive behavior and reinforce it with a treat. If some time has passed since the mistake, we would correct it if it happens again, but otherwise ignore it. We would not want to confuse it if it might not understand why the correction is happening.

Discipline:
Only light corrections as mentioned above in the moment. Never ever punishment as a dog does not understand. Plenty of positive reinforcement for behaviors we want.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In our home and in the backyard when the weather is nice.

Who is this dog for?

Family pet for us and a companion for our corgi

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Story: We've had a lot of dogs when I was growing up, but I got to the age where most of our childhood pets had passed on and it had been a few years since we had a dog in the house. We missed having a dog in the house, so the year before I graduated high school, I talked with my mom and we decided to plan seriously to adopt another dog to be my companion. I was specifically interested in an active dog, because I wanted to be able to take them with me and do things together. I looked into different breeds and became interested in corgis when I found an Instagram account, @littlecooperbear. The owner writes a blog and talks a lot about the extensive training and hiking she does with her corgi, and about the responsibilities of having this breed of dog. I researched the history of the breed and looked up videos and other accounts of corgi owners (@vlogaftercollege had good information as well) to see the pros and cons of owning a corgi and their specific needs. Seeing other owners and the activities they do with their corgi companions made me see a corgi as an attractive companion for myself, and we started looking into where to find one. As soon as I met my corgi, Watson, I fell in love. I spent the summer after high school training and bonding with him, and even after I went to college I felt so connected with him that I applied through my school to have him live with me as my Emotional Support Animal. We've spent every day together, and Watson is so smart, energetic, strong, loving, and independent. I've read that many of Watson's qualities are common to his breed, and that has led me to find corgis in general attractive breeds.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
With another Pembroke, we would really look forward to having them join us in everything we've been doing with Watson. Watson is very high energy and loves playing, running, and hiking. He loves fetch and tug-of-war, so we play with him throughout every day (depending on his mood, he decides when it's time to play) and he likes to be chased around the yard. He likes to go for long walks around the neighborhood and on my college campus (where there are lots of people- Watson loves people), and we would take another dog with us to walk and explore together. When my sister's dog visits, Watson loves doing these things with him too so of course we hope that another Pembroke and Watson can play together as well. We take Watson hiking to a different place most weekends, and take him on family vacations to hike out of state, too. We would like to take another Pembroke join us when going on hiking trips with Watson. I also would train them together with Watson– Watson knows several commands in English and Korean and I always try to keep him active with them as well as teaching him new things. I would do the same with another dog.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If the dog makes a mistake, we say "No" in a very firm voice. If the Pembroke is still new to our home and hasn't gotten used to its training yet, saying "No" in a firm tone is enough to let them know they made a mistake. If it's been a long time and they are trained (and know better than to do some things), as with Watson we may add a tap to the nose or butt.

Discipline:
We stick with positive reinforcement. Before and while training Watson, I read that training with only positive reinforcement can be completely effective, and in my experience that's true. I don't see any reason to hit my dog or give it any form of punishment if I don't have to. Watson is VERY food motivated so the promise of a treat reward is generally enough to make him listen to us. If he doesn't listen, he doesn't get a treat, and he knows that.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
The Pembroke would spent most of their time in the house with us or the fenced yard/outdoors when we go out.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, I (Story) am home all throughout the day since I'm a college student.

Where would dog eat?
Watson has a designated spot in our kitchen/dining area for his water and food. The adopted corgi would have its own separate spot as well in the same room, but away from Watson so that they each feel secure while eating their own food. Additionally, Watson is trained to wait for his food (he sits until we give him the okay so that he's not rushing at his food and making a mess) so the adopted corgi would ideally be trained by us to do the same.

Where would dog sleep:
Watson was initially trained to sleep in a crate at night until he was house trained. The adopted corgi would initially do the same until we were confident that it wouldn't be getting into things or having accidents in the house while we sleep. Now that Watson is trained, he freely roams at night and sleeps where he chooses– in either of our beds, on the floor, and a lot of the time under my (Story's) bed. He's also slept in dog beds before and has one but he didn't act crazy about them and tended to ignore them in favor of our beds. Once the adopted corgi was well house trained, we would likely let them choose where they sleep, like Watson.

Play & exercise:
As previously stated, we play with our dog usually whenever he wants. In the house, we play fetch and tug-of-war with him several times a day. We take him outside when he whines to pee and also to roam or run around the yard. We walk him on leash during the week and take him on leash to hike most weekends. These hikes are generally at least 1 mile (sometimes several) and include diverse terrains. The corgi would get to experience all this with us.

Who is this dog for?

Family pet.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We like the personality and traits of this breed. We enjoy their playfulness and loyalty. We have always groomed our own dogs and after having had shih tzus, find that grooming is much easier with our corgi. He loves to be brushed. We have always been a multi-dog family and we as well as the dogs enjoy the comradery.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
In addition to inside play, we have a large fenced yard that allows for active play and a dog park very nearby. Our dogs are a very big part of our lives and with us regardless of the activity, even if it is just snuggling while we watch TV. They enjoy walks and travel with us frequently. They socialize with our friends' dogs frequently. Both of our dogs have attended training classes.

Who is this dog for?

Us

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I rescued a dog in 2007 who was a corgi mix. We lost her last year (she was 16). Our vet consistently commented about how “Corgi” she was and we loved everything about her personality. She was playful, curious, and chased anything that moved. Since Winnie, I have grown so interested in the breed and have done research to learn more about them. I also grew up with Australian Cattle dogs so the herding instincts are something I’m familiar with.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Go for walks/runs if tolerated, dog park visits, couch snuggles, backyard playing, pretty much anything. We are looking for our constant companion.

Who is this dog for?

Applicant #1 – Madeline Yzurdiaga

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have loved Pembroke Welsh Corgis since I was a child and grew up with one, who my family adopted when I was five years old and had until I turned 18 years old. My dog, Rambo, was my earliest and sometimes only best friend. I took him on walks and to the park every day for 13 years and is among my happiest childhood memories. I've been hoping to adopt a corgi since his passing. I love corgis because they are so outgoing, upbeat and energetic, and generally loving breed. You can spend time with them in the park for hours, take them on long walks, but still sit on the couch all day with them. I am a very active person, working out daily and going on long walks, so a corgi is a great dog that can be incorporated to all aspects of my life. I also love them because they are smaller in size so they can easily cuddle with you on the couch or in bed. I have done a lot of research on the breed and know that they can be prone to barking and biting on things if they don't get enough social activity. I plan to combat that minimum twice daily walks and lots of toys and activities throughout the day. My flexible schedule allows me to leave at a moment's notice for more activity.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I plan on going on long walks, playing at the park and the dog park, taking them out in the neighborhood to socialize with other dogs and people, and go for jogs (if the dog is able to and wants to, of course).

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If a Pembroke made a mistake, I would use it as an opportunity for improvement and not shame. I would first solve the mistake, either by cleaning up the mess or handling any fallout from the mistake (apology to another dog owner, etc.). I then would use positive reinforcement for the opposite behavior. If that was unsuccessful long term, I would attend formal training classes.

Discipline:
I wouldn't "discipline" the dog in any physical sense. Rather, I would use treats, toys, and praise in combination with positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior. When I helped train my parents' dogs, I used behavioral modification with the help of treats. For instance, one of my parents' dogs was leash reactive and would lunge at other dogs. I worked with him on a "watch" command by giving him treats for making eye contact with him both while sitting and on walks, to distract him from potential loud noises, like dogs. Then I would give him lots of praise for not barking.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Pembroke would likely spend most of his or her time in my apartment, which is a two-bedroom apartment with a dining room, living room, and back patio.

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, both my roommate and I are home all day. My law school classes are entirely remote so we're home all the time.

Where would dog eat?
My adopted corgi would eat in our apartment.

Where would dog sleep:
My adopted corgi would sleep in my room in a crate or on a dog bed, whichever is better for the corgi's history. I am planning on crate training my corgi, if they are not crate-trained already. If they are singularly unsuited to a crate, I'm also happy to have the dog on a dog bed in my room, which has tons of room.

Play & exercise:
I would walk my adopted corgi with minimum two walks per day and then go to the park (weather permitting) once per day. As to play, I would have lots of toys to play with my adopted corgi and would regularly play with my corgi throughout the day.

How will you exercise your dog?
