Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
We are looking to add a corgi to our family. We lost our dog Homer age 9 in May. Homer joined our family 8 years ago through Coco's Heart Dog Rescue in Hudson, WI. Homer had been found on a Lake Traverse Reservation in South Dakota as a 7-8 month old puppy. Homer was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus due to an under developed brain. Homer had his challenges. He had a seizure disorder due to his brain diagnosis and he was not previously trained, as far as we could tell. We were able to control the seizures with the help of medications prescribed by our vet… and we worked hard with Homer on the training issues. Homer started having neurological issues at age 8. We did our best seeking the help of veterinary specialists but in the end, it seemed that his Central Nervous System was not adequately supported and it resulted in Homer's death at age 9. I loved Homer dearly and I know I can't replace him. Homer taught me to love the breed. We currently have a 2 year old, very active Golden Retriever named Gus and we are looking to add a friend for Gus to our family. We would hope to find a younger pup to match the activity level of Gus. I don't think we would be a good match with an older dog or a dog that was experiencing major health issues. We currently live full time in Milwaukee but we own a lake home in Central Minnesota… it's a 6 hour drive back and forth and we make it frequently. I don't think we would be a good fit for an older dog or a dog with special needs. When I volunteered as a Master Gardener, I had the pleasure of getting to know Sharon Morrisey (I think she's associated with your organization or was at the time). We enjoyed trading Corgi stories and I always enjoyed hearing about the dogs in her care. I have had many dogs with health issues… that's not the problem, it's just that I don't think it would be fair right now with our active lifestyle and travels. My first priority is to find a dog that gets along well with other dogs. Gus loves other dogs so the pup will have plenty of opportunity to chase and herd. I love the idea of rescue, but I am not opposed to a puppy from a breeder however, I would want to work with someone who is responsible and has a good reputation. I hope you will keep me in mind should you come across a Corgi pup that is a good match for our family. Thank you for your time and thank you for the work you do.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I wrote a rather lengthy paragraph on the first page of this application regarding my first experience with a Corgi named Homer. I know I can't replace Homer… I wouldn't try. I loved Homer dearly and he taught me to love this breed. I love their spirit. I love their big dog attitude packed into a compact body. I think they are fierce and fearless and loyal companions. I love the joy of this breed… the dogs are happy and joyful but they also bring joy to everyone they meet.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We currently have a 2 yo VERY active Golden Retriever. We would love to have a playmate for Gus. We own a lake home in Minnesota so there would be a good deal of travel back and forth. We are very active at the lake… swimming, boating, working in the garden. The dogs have the run of the property and at the end of the day… there's a spot for them on the end of our bed. When we are at our home in Milwaukee we spend time in our fenced yard and we take daily walks through the park.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I consider myself an experienced dog owner and I strive to always use positive reinforcement for training. I do my best to stay patient and use non-physical correction. I have always taken my dogs to obedience classes for training and socialization. I don't raise my voice or spank. I know it's a long process. I will seek the help of trainers if necessary.
Discipline: |
Verbal correction with positive reinforcement. Treats, toys… whatever works best with the individual dog.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
I am currently not working outside the home so the pup would be with me the majority of the time. I enjoy walks and time outside and I enjoy having my pets with me whenever possible.

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
I am not working outside the home currently so with the exception of errands and social engagements, I'm usually home. My husband is currently working at home as well.
Where would dog eat? |
We are big believers in crate training and have always found it helpful, at least initially, to feed our dogs in their crates.
Where would dog sleep: |
We have dogs beds scattered throughout our home. We also have dog beds staged in our bedroom. I would probably opt to have the pup sleep in its crate until there's an established comfort level. I have always had a pet friendly house… they usually establish their favorite spots on their own. My furniture is dog friendly.
Play & exercise: |
Gus, our Golden, will be a great play partner. He is active and loves to play with other dogs. We take daily walks… usually 2-3 per day. I subscribe to the philosophy that a tired dog makes for a happy dog owner!
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
Willing to pick up dog waste? |
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.
Willing to use a crate? |
We have a small yard in Milwaukee which is surrounded by a 4' high, wooden picket fence. We do not currently have a fence at our lake home, but our property consists of over 2 acres and it is rather remote. We would be more than willing to fence in a section of the yard if necessary and we would use a tether or leash until the pup is familiar and comfortable.

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.
Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
Yes. Gus is an amiable fellow… he is not at all dominate. Homer was much more of the dominate dog in our household. Gus is not currently neutered since our vet recommended waiting until after age two because he is a Golden. We intend to neuter him sometime this winter.
Lifetime commitment to Pembroke? |
Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
us | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We adopted a corgi from your organization in 2009, her name then was baby girl which we changed to Kiva. Kiva was 7 1/2 yrs old, a surrender from an elderly couple. She was a gentle sweet dog that was wonderful with our grandchildren when they began to come along. She never bothered them but would sit in the room when we played with them. She was a wonderful dog that we had fun walking in the neighborhood as well as playing with in the back yard. She wasn't really into toys too much but would love to run around so I would do that with her in the yard-loved those zoomies! She would always stay in whatever room we were in, and I would bring her up on the sofa to be petted when watching tv. She was very friendly and would greet everyone who came to the house, we loved that about her. She was easily trained as corgis are which was great. We had originally applied with your organization because our son had a corgi that we puppy-sat and still dog-sit for when he has to go out of town. This occurs maybe every couple of years for a long weekend. We had fallen in love with him and researched corgis before we adopted one. I would like to tell you a little bit about Kiva's medical needs so hopefully you get an idea of the commitment we made to her. She developed a corneal ulcer on 1 eye. I actually contacted her foster mom, Yvette Huesler who is also a corgi breeder, for guidance. She suggested an ophthalmologist which we ultimately took her to for treatment. It was then we learned she was virtually blind in that eye due to a congenital defect. She developed an ulcer on the other eye as well later, and they believed it was because she did not produce enough tears so she was on eye drops for the rest of her life. We also discovered that she had food allergies and after multiple food changes and another email to Yvette, we got her tested. She was allergic to so many common foods that lamb was about the only protein she could have. I searched for good sources of lamb products that we could give her as a special treat periodically outside of her regular food. She developed what was believed to be DM when she was 14. We worked so hard to modify the home and how we cared for her to make it easier for her as the paralysis increased. When she could no longer stand to eat or drink and she looked so sad all the time because she could no longer move by herself, we made the difficult decision to put her down. We asked her vet to do this at home so she could pass over the rainbow bridge with the least amount of anxiety. We had her for 7 1/2 yrs, so she was 15 when she left. It has taken us a couple of years to get over her passing and now we would like to offer a good loving home to another corgi. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Walk the neighborhood and take for car rides. We would play both inside and outside, we have a fenced back yard. We took Kiva on several vacations with us staying in pet friendly hotels or vacation homes. We never left her alone when out of town but took her on our outings, walking the town streets or state parks. We have a safety harness for the car which attaches to the seat belt so we can travel safely with the dog. We have all the accoutrements from Kiva such as a crate, food bowls, leashes, beds, etc which have been cleaned.

Depending on what it was we might, redirect or say no and then encourage a better behavior

We believe in positive reinforcement . When we adopted Kiva, we immediately signed her up for training. Both of us worked with her and used food as a motivator. We plan to go to obedience training with the new dog as well. Kiva was a bit overweight when we got her so she dieted and we maintained her weight once it got down to a healthy number. We would give her carrots as treats to help keep the weight down as well.

With us, in the house unless we were working outside and it wasn't too hot or too cold outside.

yes, we are both retired

Kitchen | ||||||
Where would dog sleep: |
Crate or dog bed, whichever works best or is most comfortable for the dog. When we got Kiva, we had planned on having her sleep in the crate and we did use the crate initially. But, she wanted to be near us and she was very trustworthy in the house so she had free reign in the house.
Play & exercise: |
We would walk the dog at least twice a day. We have many gardens and love to spend time outside working in them so the dog can come out with us and investigate the yard. We would try playing with toys, we found the ones that you can put treats into so the dog has to work to get them out was a good way to exercise the brain, although those we would only do indoors so the dog does not accidentally eat something outside it shouldn't.

We have a four foot picket fence in the back yard. One side neighbor has replaced the picket fence with a 5 foot chain link. We have a new neighbor on the other side which recently replaced the pickets with a 6 or 7 ft privacy fence. So actually, the 4 foot picket fence is now in the back and the sides of our house with the other 2 fences on either side.

We added a small wire fence in the yard to keep Kiva away from the vegetables when we had her but that is a small part of the yard. She loved the yard and would fall asleep on the deck often. She loved investigating the yard and had a favorite corner. In the winter, we would shovel a path through the snow to that corner so she could easily get back there to do her business and check things out. We have a wooden deck off the kitchen and it has about 6 steps to the back yard. When walking, we go out the either the front door which has about 4 steps or the garage which has 2.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
MYSELF | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I love the clownish behavior of a corgi. This would be my third. The only thing not to love is the shedding! They are so smart. The herding instinct would be a problem if I had kids/grandkids, but I do not. They don't tend to dig. The barking is manageable. They are such drama queens!
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I have a large, fenced in yard. I like to play with my dogs back there or take them to the dog park (I'm on the board of the local park). My dogs are allowed to come and go from the house as they please – the doggie door is almost always open!
Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs? |
Yes | ||||||
Money for basic care? |

Money for unforeseen medical expenses? |

Willing to house train? |

||||||
Do you have a veterinarian? |
Yes | ||||||
Vet contact info: |
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}
Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I'm not into negative reinforcement
Discipline: |
Scolding. Gracie, my current corgi, gets "the naught collar" once in awhile, when she has out-of-control barking. It sprays a little spray of water into the air when she barks. She certainly doesn't need it often, and even telling her that I might have to get out the naughty collar works now. She is so smart.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
At my house. I work from home most of the time, even before covid. My dogs have always slept in the bedroom with me and are allowed on the bed if they want. They also have dog beds throughout the house. They also can come and go into the large, fenced in back yard as they please, through my doggie door.

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Almost always. | ||||||
Where would dog eat? |
Kitchen. I separate the bowls, so there isn't a chance for food stealing.
Where would dog sleep: |
In a doggie bed in my bedroom or in my bed. It is up to the dog. I tend to get 1/4 of the king sized bed. Sasha hogs the rest of it. Gracie likes to sleep in her bed at the foot of my bed.
Play & exercise: |
I try to play daily with my dogs outside, playing fetch or tug or just smelling the flowers.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Restrained to the yard | ||||||

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Back yard is totally fenced. No pool, except a kiddie pool for the dogs when it is hot. I am careful not to plant toxic plants. I assume most of my hostas will be thrashed by Fall, due to Sasha chasing the occasional bunnies or chipmunks.

Current pets dog friendly? |
Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.
Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
Yes. I've found the dog park is a great way to help socialize my dogs. We have a small dog area that they can start out in. I think it is good to put up a gate between the dogs, so they can get used to each others scents. My two corgis used to fight once in awhile, and I was not scare to pick up one dog to get it away from the situation, even at the risk of being biten.

Must like other dogs as I have a 7 year old Yellow Labrador and a 2 year old English Cream Golden Retriever. I also have three grandchildren who visit. They are very respectful of dogs as they have grown up with mine and have a dog in their family. I have quite a bit of experience with corgis. Love the breed

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I would try to redirect the dog, say “no” and then be firm in redirecting the dog to an appropriate behavior. I would also try to monitor the dogs behavior at first to make sure the dog isn’t doing anything it shouldn’t.
Discipline: |
I prefer positive reinforcement. And would love to reward positive behavior. I would also prefer to catch any inappropriate behavior in the act so as to help the puppy realize they shouldn’t be doing it.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
The puppy would spend time at the house and with us. When we are away the puppy could stay in his or her crate which would hopefully be a safe place for them.

Who is this dog for? |
Us! | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We had a PWC who just died at age 2.5. We loved her so much and had just gotten used to her activity level and personality and she was well-trained from doggie classes. We miss her very much and just fell in love with how beautiful and spunky she was.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Our corgi didn’t make many mistakes… if she chewed on something, we removed those things from the area and replaced with a chew toy; if she had a potty accident we took her outside and learned her potty schedule. So we worked on training away bad behavior.
Discipline: |
Mostly always positive reinforcement or remove the tempting object that the corgi shouldn’t get into.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Depends on the corgis activit’s needs. When we’ve been able to work from home and Duchess needed a lot of exercise, we did three one-hour play sessions at the dog park or doggy daycare if we had to go to work. As she mellowed it she would nap during the day and dog park 1-2 times during the day. Otherwise walks and activities on the weekends.
