Who is this dog for?

Ourselves

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We want to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi because we do love the breed and it's a non-negotiable that we adopt. We're drawn to the breed because of their cuteness, of course, but also their intelligence and temperament. We're very interested in how easily trained many tend to be and how loving they are. We really love that they're family dogs and are anxious to introduce one into our pack.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We have a smaller fenced-in yard for short potty breaks, but take daily walks around the neighborhood. We live less than a block from a paved trail (the Monon) so walks there are a near daily activity and FULL of other dogs and lots to sniff. We also live about a 5 minute drive from a wonderful dog park. Finally, Liz's parents have a lake house, so trips up to the lake are commonplace in the summer–boat rides included if the dog is comfortable with them and with a life jacket (Tedi has one that makes her look like a clown fish).

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We reprimand with firm "no" commands if we witness the dog misbehaving and redirect to the appropriate or desired outcome if possible.

Discipline:
We prefer positive reinforcement to negative

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Our Corgi would spend all of his or her time in our house, except when out for adventures with us. We don't travel much, but when we do, we leave Tedi in the care of my parents, who have had dogs all their lives.

House dog

People at home during the day?
CJ works from home, so he's home all day. When he is called to the office, he goes in very early and is home very early, while Liz's schedule is more opposite, so our dog is alone for about half the day.

Where would dog eat?
Food and water are located in the kitchen.

Where would dog sleep:
Unless the dog preferred a crate or to sleep on a dog bed, the dog would sleep in bed with us.

Play & exercise:
Fortunately, because we live so close to the Monon Trail, there are ample opportunities to play, sniff, and walk/run.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
We have a wooden picket fence surrounding our side yard that is approximately 5 feet tall. There are no gaps in the fence, and the previous occupant of the house was able to keep a Great Dane contained within it.

Everyone in household agrees about adopting a corgi?
Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

May we do a home visit?

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Both Liz and CJ

Willing to train children?
We don't have any children and don't plan to

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Current pets:

{Please list and describe all of the pets that currently live in your home, including the name, type, age, sex and whether it is neutered. For example, Lenny, komodo dragon, 3 years old, not neutered.:80}

Current pets dog friendly?

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Absolutely. We view this as a life-long commitment, so we'd try any and every in-home solution to any future problems. We think our family will be complete with the addition of a Corgi, so we don't anticipate adding any other pets. Our cat largely ignores the dog, and is generally pretty laid back.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Understand no guarantees?

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet?
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.

Who is this dog for?

The Pembroke would be a family pet. We have a family of 4 (2 children 8 and 19 – the 19 year old is MSU Student who lives at home seasonally). We have had two family dogs in the past – Samoyed pure breed (lived 12 years), and a rescue Samoyed mix (our pet for 13 years).

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We love the breed, small and friendly. However, we have no previous experience owning a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. We do have a friend who owns a puppy.
Corgi dogs are good family dogs. We love an outgoing, friendly dog.
We like dogs with a herding background due to their loyalty and love for their family.
We have previously owned Samoyed and Samoyed mix dogs (1 purebred and purchased from a breeder, and 1 rescue Samoyed Mix).

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I walk daily, and would love to have the dog along for nice walks. We live on a lake and would love to take the dog on the boat with the family. I work from home so I can be home with the dog most days.

Who is this dog for?

This corgi will be for my fiance and I. We just bought our house this year, and we are in the process of having our yard fenced in. Now that we're getting settled in, we thought it would be the perfect time to find another addition to our small family. We currently have a 6 year old PWC who I've had since she was a puppy, so we are pretty familiar with the breed. I am looking to go through a rescue for our second dog, rather than a breeder, which led me here.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
While we are not exclusively looking to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the breed is on my short list of "preferred" breeds for our next dog. As I stated in a previous application question, we currently have a 6 year old PWC who is the light of my life, and it would be a dream come true to find an adoptable corgi to add to our family. I am familiar with the corgi temperament, as well as potential medical considerations that come along with the breed.
I have found my current corgi to be very smart and easy to train , very food-motivated, surprisingly able to get into mischief (which has led to corgi-proofing some areas of the house that I never thought she would be able to reach, like the kitchen counters!), and simultaneously mellow and high-energy with random bouts of the "zoomies." I am also familiar with their grooming requirements and have become accustomed to finding dog hair on everything I own, no matter how often I brush (almost daily) and bathe (monthly or as needed) our corgi and vacuum our house.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We take our corgi on 3 walks a day in addition to quick potty breaks in the backyard.
Once we finish fencing in our new backyard, they'll have nearly half an acre of room to run and play off-leash. We love taking our corgi on car rides and hiking in the state park near our house, and bringing her to our parents' houses to interact with other dogs in a safe environment. We have shied away from using our local dog park due to a lack of monitoring and influx of aggressive dogs, but we still try to keep our dog socialized and would do all the same with our future second dog.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I have found that a lot of the "mistakes" that my corgi has made over the years could have been avoided ahead of time, and I have learned to kind of preemptively remove the risk (leaving any kind of food in a potentially-accessible area, for example). Depending on the type of mistake, I will use one of the discipline methods discussed in the next question if I see fit. If the mistake requires medical attention, I have both our regular vet and the local emergency vet phone numbers saved in my phone.

Discipline:
When I catch them in the behavior, usually a firm "No!" will do the trick in conjunction with redirection and rewarding when they do the correct behavior.
I have removed my dog from situations in which she is acting out (barking at guests, begging for food, etc.) by sending her to her crate (which she loves and will willingly spend time in) until she calms down, then allowing her to be out with us again.
If she is too excited about something, I avoid giving her attention until she settles down.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Almost 100% of the time, our current corgi has free reign over the house whether we are home or away, and she usually spends her time on the main level of our house. She is crate trained and will often to go her crate (in the living room) to just hang out, or if we have to secure her when somebody is over. We do allow her to sleep in our bedroom with us. We would intend on the same system with a new dog, tweaking it as we see fit while we go through the acclimation process to our house.

People at home during the day?
We both work second shift, but schedules are offset a bit, so there is a period of about 6-7 hours, only 3 days a week, where nobody will be home. The rest of the time, at least one of us will be home.
Our current system is for my fiance to take the dog(s) on a walk and feed them lunch right before he leaves for work, then for me to walk the dog(s) and feed them dinner when I get home from work so that there is a minimal amount of time where they are needing to go potty or eat. We've been using this system for nearly 4 years with our current corgi, and it hasn't given us any issue yet. I feel it is worth noting that we also have a Furbo dog camera that covers the majority of the main level of our house, so that we can check in and keep an eye on the dog(s) while we are away.

It would be most ideal to be able to take a corgi home during the time frame of September 5-13, 2020 when we are both off work, so that we can really work on getting a new dog acclimated to our routine and house.

Where would dog eat?
We have a corner of our dining area set up for our current corgi's food/water station. We would initially set up for a second dog right next to this area, but if we find that there is any kind of food guarding/aggression/protection issue between the two dogs, we would move the new dog's food station to the opposite side of the room or into the new dog's crate as needed to prevent issue.

Where would dog sleep:
At night, our adopted corgi would ideally sleep in our bed with us and our current corgi. We do also have a dog bed set up in our bedroom for our current corgi, one in the open in our living room, and one in her crate in the living room. 90% of the time our corgi will sleep in our bed, but occasionally she likes to use the dog bed in our bedroom. We like to give her the option for her own comfort. We would do the same for our future second dog.

Play & exercise:
In addition to our 3 walks a day, I have dedicated play time with my corgi before and after I work each day, plus throughout the day on my days off. Once we finish fencing in our yard, our dog(s) will have nearly a half acre of lawn and wooded yard to play in. My current corgi is very well trained with recall, so I usually keep her off leash in our backyard now as long as I am actively able to pay attention to her while I'm out there. Until the yard is fully fenced, I would keep our second corgi on a leash in the back yard while we work on training.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
Our fence has not currently been installed yet since we just moved into this house earlier this year, but we are under contract with a fencing company to have the fence installed by the end of the year (weather permitting, by the end of September). Since our backyard is half lawn and half woods, our fence is divided into two zones – a 6 foot cedar privacy fence in the lawn half by our house, and a 4ft chainlink fence in the wooded half. The entire back yard will be fenced in, giving a large and secure play area for our dogs.

Who is this dog for?

Applicant 1 – Ryan Glannan

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I love the companionship that corgis have. A friend growing up had a corgi and it was the best dog I’d ever met. Growing up I had multiple dogs and always wanted a corgi. I’ve done a lot of research and understand their energy, playfulness, and since they’re herding they need stimulation and direction. I also love how they generally want to be with their people so often.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I’m a very active person and ride my bike and go for walks daily, which having a corgi would only make more enjoyable! I live near many different parks and dog parks. Multiple close friends have their own dogs and frequently meet up for dog play dates. The list goes on!

Who is this dog for?

Myself

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I’m very fond of herding dogs because I find them beyond smart, silly, and energetic. I’m looking for a dog that I can focus on training and that I can be more active with. Corgis are the smallest of these dogs and would best fit in my medium sized apartment. I also just think they look adorable.

I don’t have any experience with corgis but I do have experience with herding dogs. My dog up until I was 23 was a German shepherd who had a lot of energy to spare.

Yes, I have done research on the breed.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I live two blocks from a large prairie- esque park in the city so on most days, I’ll take them to do laps (or just walk around). On weekends, I tend to go to state parks or the beach.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I’d first try to figure out why the dog made a mistake at all. If it’s for reasons that I can control (such as whining at the dinner table) then I would correct my behavior until the dog stops acting this way.

If it’s something outside of my personal control, I would either ignore the dog (if they want attention) and seek guidance from a trainer.

Positive reinforcement

Other preferences:
We are not sure we would request a corgi over 6 or 7 years or so. We lost our last corgi last year and would prefer a dog that we can have for a while. Also must be good with small children and cats – not food aggressive or snippy if possible. We have a pretty quiet household with just the 2 of us, but have family over sometimes (when we are out of this Covid thing we will have more friends over).

We do not currently have a fenced in yard but are getting plans to put one in.

Who is this dog for?

It is for myself and my husband Chris. We have owned 2 corgis before. Our last dog passed away in August 2019. We did not pursue another dog right away because we had a cat that was 20 1/2 yrs old at the time and we didn't want to stress him by introducing a new animal to the household. He has since passed away and we now have 2 new rescue cats.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
They are smart, intelligent, easily trained, eye candy, and we have owned two corgis already that we raised from puppies that lived to be 13 yrs. 4 mo.(Percy) and 14 yrs. 6 mo. (Kirby)

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Walks, play with a ball many times a day, we made up games to play with them, took them both to obedience training, taught them some tricks, and they were our constant companions.

Play & exercise:
We played with our corgis every day , several times a day. We also have two rescue cats 1 year old that were in a foster home with 4 dogs and liked to play /sleep with them.

Who is this dog for?

The corgi is for us.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
My parents raised Labrador Retrievers for the Seeing Eye For the Blind organization. We always has at least three dogs in the house at all times, and at least one litter a year for 10 years. It did not fail for one of the dogs to misbehave by jumping up on the dining room table and stealing our thanksgiving or Christmas turkey. It was then at the age of 8 or so that I decided that I would own small dogs with big personalities. I think Tasha Tudor may have influenced me as a young girl, because it was the Corgi that I decided I would have one when I grew up. I read about Corgis, talked to owners, and decided that I wanted to find a young dog. I adopted Ruby from Tailwagers 911. She came from Alabama. She was 2 years old. I think that she may have been surrendered because of the owner's death. She was very partial to older men and would greet them as dear friends. This made my elderly neighbor so happy.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I would work on teaching the Corgi tricks. Ruby loved her 45 minutes of training each day. Corgis have to have jobs. Her job was learning new behaviors and practicing old ones. I would walk my corgi at least 4x a day. Corgis need to be exercised. Until her last year of life, when she really began to slow down, Ruby was walking 1 mile each walk. I would hang out in the back yard with my Corgi because there is nothing nicer than sleeping on your back on the cool grass while the sun gently caresses your tummy. I would brush my corgi. They do shed twice a year: January – July and August – December. I would love my Corgi in word and deed.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
As a former special education teacher, I realize the onus is on the teacher. If my Corgi made a mistake, I would look at the mistake and work out how I could train the dog or how I could train me. When Ruby first came to my home, she chewed my favorite shoes. Did I scold her? No. The deed has been done. I put my shoes in a basket with high sides and she never ate another shoe.

Discipline:
I use positive reinforcement. With my students, I found that using a pleasant voice, and using a consistent tone helped them work. I used that same voice with Ruby. There is no need to shout or yell. That only scares the dog. With Corgis,f ood is a great motivator and most Corgis want to please you. In Ruby's last 6 months of life, she had occasional bouts of incontinence. I cleaned it up and moved on. Even with frequent trips outside, she still did pee on the floor. She was doing the best she could and I loved her for that.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
With me and my husband. I work from home and he is retired.

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes. My daughter and son in-law live upstairs from us. My husband is either in the house or working on a car in the garage. And myself.

Where would dog eat?
There is a dedicated spot where they would be feed in the house.

Where would dog sleep:
In our bedroom in their own doggie bed.

Play & exercise:
By taking my corgi on walks. I live on a dead-end street that has a gravel road that leads to a farm. The owners have let me walk my dogs through their farm for the last 11 years four times a day. In the morning we would walk down to the farm, at noon depending upon the weather, we would walk up the street. Then around 4 or so, it was time to get in the car and go to a nature preserve. Corgis love variety. Living in Mequon and I am so fortunate to have a nature preserve less than 2 miles from my house. Then in the evening with a flash light, we would go for one last walk. Depending on weather, it could be a short pee break or if it was walkable weather, we could take a stroll up the street. Also once a day in the house, we would work on learning new behaviors, and praciticing old one. Also in the winter I would shovel the snow to make corgi course for Ruby to use in the evening. She and I would play chase around the course.

Description of yard:

No swimming pool. We do live on the Milwaukee River. My dogs both are leashed in the yard. They are not allowed to roam. We do have a dock in the summer and both dogs would love to go down the stairs to the dock. When we were on the dock, Ruby had her own flotation device…just in case she were to fall in. I took her kayaking, and boating.
