Who is this dog for?

Myself

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have only heard great things about this particular breed. I currently live in a 800 sq foot apartment and I heard this breed often does well in smaller living spaces. They are very energetic and I feel they would be a good match considering my active lifestyle. I am always going on outdoor runs, camping, hiking, etc. I have met many corgis in my building as well as through friends and love their personality and warm spirit. I have done a fair amount of research on the breed and seem they would be a great fit for the reasons mentioned above.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Go on runs/walks, play in the park adjacent to my apartment, go on camping trips, and if the individual loves water, get them comfortable with going to the lake.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Discipline is only effective if action is taken during/immediately following the incident. In the case I can actually catch the dog while making at accident, I would quickly pick him/her up and move them outside. Furthermore, I understand crating a dog is NOT an effective way to handle bad behavior. The dog should not associate bad memories with the crate.

Discipline:
Making direct eye contact and using a stern voice has always worked in the past.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Depending on the personality, I would let the dog stay crated while at work or allow full range of the apartment. I have also considered getting a pen if the dog doesn't like being crated.

No

Where would dog eat?
Inside the apartment.

Where would dog sleep:
In my bedroom either in a crate or on some type of dog bed.

Play & exercise:
I would like to come home during lunch for the first few months and give the dog atleast 20-30 minutes of outside time. I would then follow this up with 1-2 hours outside either on a run or playing in the park.

Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I’d really like to own one because of their personalities. I love the size of them and I love the hair. I want a dog that has some fur I can pet. I don’t really have any experience with the breed. I have done some research on them and think it would be a good fit for my family.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I’d play in the backyard with the Pembroke, take walks, go for car rides, and just love the heck out of it.

Discipline:

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
The puppy would spend most of the time with me.

Where would dog sleep:
He would most likely sleep where he is comfortable, whether that be my bed or the floor. I’m definitely a co-sleeper.

Play & exercise:
We have a fenced in back yard. I love to take our current dog outside to play fetch, bask in the sun, and even play in the doggie(kiddie) pool. We also do walks around our subdivision. We typically do at least an hour a day.

How will you exercise your dog?

Who is this dog for?

Myself

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I love the personality and size of the Corgi, it's a lot of dog in a little package. I am 55 and have always had dogs. My husband passed away 5 years ago and the last of my three dogs that we had passed away this March. I didn't realize how much I missed the sound of nails clicking on the floor, and walks.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I have a good sized fenced backyard so we can play there as well as hang out in the hammock and relax. We can go for walks, and if possible depending on the dogs personality maybe do some continued training to keep the mind sharp and help with energy level, depending on age of dog. Go for drives in the car, whatever he or she enjoys doing.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Repeat the instruction and give praise when the dog shows that's it making the effort. Always end a training session on a good note

Discipline:
Depends on the dog and what works to get their attention. Some of my dogs have responded better to a snap of the finger to get their focus, others only require a stern tone, one of my rescue dogs responded to a clicker.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
With me in my home. If I'm not home, he or she can have full access to the house.bor if they are shy I will provide an open crate for them to have a place to go to. Every dog is different, some like to stay in a small area, some like their crate for resting while I'm gone and others take over the couch.

Our children are older–11 and 16. Their mother (we are dad and stepmom; kids are at our house 50% of time) fosters dogs so they are used to being around many dogs of various types and have always been very good with them. They are beyond the 'run and scream' stage of life!

Our other dogs, as I mentioned above, are Neko, a 13 year old corgi mix who still plays with our other dog sometimes (she has to be more careful now), and the doxie-beagle, Bertram, who is 3. Bert is a lover and his biggest fault is that he will push other pooches out of the way to get pets; however, he is not aggressive except for that, and he enjoys being 'mothered' by Neko.

We do both work so the dogs are on their own approximately 9 hrs/day. Bert is crated and Neko roams free. They seem to sleep most of this time that we are gone. So again, a high-energy dog who is easily bored might not be best.

Who is this dog for?

Beth and Tim and our kids

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Our dog, Neko, is a corgi mix (we've been told she is possibly corgi-chow). She has the build of a corgi and from what we've researched over the years, the temperament of a corgi. She is outgoing and friendly, brave (she once protected our youngest from another dog when he was very young!), snuggly and loving when SHE wants to be, and a bit bossy (she lets us know when she wants to go out or to be fed by staring holes into us and then hopping or using her nose to "herd us" where she wants us to go). She showed Bert the ropes when he joined the family and both grooms him and plays with him. She is definitely our "guard dog" who barks to alert us to any suspicious noises, and she has caught her fair share of rabbits and voles in the yard. We love all of these things about Neko, and our understanding is that most of these qualities are typical* of the breed. (*We understand every dog is different!) Neko is 13 so as she gets older we decided to start looking into getting another dog; we are in no major rush and as we understand it, it can take awhile to for the right dog to come into this rescue, so we thought we'd go ahead and put our names in.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
As I mentioned earlier, we are not the most adventure-seeking family. The dog would be a companion dog for our family; they'd be part of our 'pack.' We would play in the fenced yard, go on walks, and lounge together. The dog could play with Bert, play catch with us, etc. Our dogs sleep in our bed and are allowed on the furniture so there would be plenty of snuggle time!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We like the 'reward when they do something right' method–lots of training treats. It depends what the mistake is; if it's going to the bathroom in the house, for example, you have to catch them in the act to make any difference–if we were able to do that, we'd probably just make a sharp noise to get their attention and then try to get them outside right away. Treats whenever they do go outside, etc. When Bert was young and would chew on shoes we adapted to not leave shoes lying around, and/or we'd take away the shoe and give him a nylabone or other chew toy instead.

Discipline:
See my answer to the above; treats when they are doing something right tends to be the most effective in my experience.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
They would spend most of their time inside the house. When we are home, I'd expect that they would be with us and the other dogs. When we are not at home, I'd expect they would mostly sleep, likely in a crate, at least to start.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
No, there generally are not people home during the day as both my husband and I work in offices, and our children are in school.

Where would dog eat?
Currently we feed our dogs in separate rooms–Neko eats right by the food and Bert eats in the living room. Likely we would feed a third dog in our kitchen or another area of our house, at least as long as Neko lives.

We feed our dogs Merrick dry dog food.

Where would dog sleep:
Our dogs sleep in our bedroom with my husband and I; they have beds on the floor but always end up in bed with us!

Play & exercise:
When we are home, the dogs are free to go out to the backyard to run around as much as they like. We would also take them on occasional walks. We currently play fetch with Bert inside the house (he likes us to throw one of his stuffed toys and he retrieves it). Bert instigates play with Neko a few times a day.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
We have a black coated chain link fence around our entire backyard. It's a standard chain link fence height (I believe it's 4 ft. tall).

Description of yard:

We have a simple rectangular yard that is partially shaded, maybe 500 square feet (I'm not good with measurements so this may not be 100% correct!). There are some plants that aren't dangerous to dogs, and a grill, and sometimes patio furniture. Nothing like a swimming pool.

May we do a home visit?

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Beth and Tim equally share the responsibility

Willing to train children?
Yes; as I mentioned earlier, both boys are very good with dogs. In addition to the two dogs at our house, their mother owns 3 dogs and fosters upwards of an additional 2-3 dogs most of the time. So they are surrounded by them! Both boys have a very tender and empathetic heart for animals.

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Yes, although I would prefer that the dogs all meet one another before we enter into the commitment just to be sure there is no immediate/concerning dislike; I believe this is healthiest for all the dogs.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Understand no guarantees?

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Who is this dog for?

We would love to make a Corgi a part of our family.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We've done a lot of research into various dogs and various dog breeds. After thinking over our needs and the dogs whose needs we would need to accompany we believe the Pembroke Welsh Corgi could be a good fit for our home. We have never really seen or met a Corgi but we've done research on them. We know that as first-time owners a male would be a better fit for us.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Walking either in our neighboorhood or at a park, riding in the car, sitting with him on the couch or outside, sleeping on the bed, and running.

Our first Corgi was a VERY dominant male who was not people friendly. He was quite aggressive but we had a good relationship and loved him dearly for 13+years. He especially connected with my husband at the time who was very good at working with his strong personality. Despite our Corgi's "Grumpy Old Man" tendencies, he was very loyal and loving to us, and was not a problem with my (then infant) son nor his friends, which was most important. Our second Corgi was an extremely affectionate, somewhat needy female who loved ALL people, especially children. She was much easier to walk and have in social situations. She connected with me very strongly but had no separation anxiety–such a good girl. Like our previous corgi, she had some difficult behavioral "issues" as well, but nothing we couldn't adapt to. The trade-off with both of them was well worth it.
Both had very deep barks, preferable to the high, ear-piercing barks of a friend's corgi. (I know this seems minor, but I prefer the deeper bark.) Both were quite playful but not hyper or destructive out of boredom. We would prefer a cuddler as our little girl Sammi spoiled us in that respect (Chester did not like to be touched for more than a few minutes).
I feel we've lived with two extremes personality-wise. Even though Chester and Sammi were polar opposites, their "corginess" has us hooked forever. I miss them both tremendously, but am thankful for every moment we had.

Who is this dog for?

A downsized family consisting of one single mother and college student at home. Our household adopted our first Pembroke, a male (known as "Stinky" by his foster, Debbie Ritchie!) about 20 years ago. After he passed at age 15.5, we came to your Wisconsin location and adopted a female (known as Pinky). She had severe storm and fireworks anxiety, needed 5 teeth removed, and we found out in days, an advanced case of mammarian cancer. We fell in love with her the minute we met her and there was no question we'd do what it would take to save her. Six healthy and incredibly happy years later her cancer returned and, last week, almost a year after her diagnosis we lost our sweet Sammi once it had spread to her lungs and progressed aggressively.
We are not looking to replace Sammi (an impossible task), nor are we looking for an immediate match. When the time is right, our Corgi will come along.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Please see my previous comments.
In addition, nothing brings a smile to one's face more quickly than a Corgi!
Prior to our first Corgi, we had read much about the breed. Now, after having two of different ages, genders, personalities, we've determined that, like people, they are very individual beings. Outside of physical traits (certain health concerns, shedding, etc.) we are open-minded about the type of Corgi we'll have.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Mostly walks (no running). We have a large back yard for frisbee and ball playing, but neither of our corgis were interested! I just posted pics of my Sammi on FB (Linda Gaio) if you care to see our yard. We have many children in the neighborhood so playfulness is a plus. Although corgis bring out playfulness in adults as well! I occasionally took Sammi to work at a retail shop (a photo bus also on FB). I found our corgis got plenty of exercise in our small house with a lot of stairs, large yard, and very walkable neighborhood.
I see the remark below and feel "prepared" for those characteristics, even though they are not what we experienced with our dogs 100%.
"very active (both, somewhat), vocal (neither), busy dogs (both, sonewhat)that enjoy being with people (Sammi, yes; Chester, no way!) and insist on receiving a great deal of affection (Sammi, never enough! Chester, occasionally, for limited times)

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I find corgis are very attentive and know when you are talking directly to them so no yelling is needed only a firm tone of voice. It would depend on the situation, but I feel they can detect that something is not acceptable in the tone of my voice and facial expression. In the case of urinating in the house I would simply say No! Point to the area and grab the paper towels. (Whenever that happened it was usually my female–a UTI, or storm anxiety, so no sense in getting angry). With my male and his aggression issues, we tried spraying a water bottle which worked okay. It only took a couple of sprays until we just left the bottle by the front door and he toned it down a bit at that location!

Discipline:
See above. On occasion, I would remove them from the situation. For example, with Chester we'd simply say "crate" and he would grumpily put himself in there. Sammi had crate issues, which we were told by the rescue people. She would bite at the bars and already had broken teeth bc of it, so we did away with the crate for her. We'd put her in the kitchen with baby gates. Again, firm voice and eye contact was beat in both cases.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Access to the yard while we are home. full range, depending on the dog) and full range of the house throughout the day, depending on the Corgi's habits. For example, Chester loved the low level bathroom trash, so those doors remained closed, and found a few food-related gifts so those were stored in a spare bedroom closet with a lock! He was a bit of a Houdini…

People at home during the day?
My son is between classes and, while I work during the day, 10-5, I live close to work–7 minute walk! So I'm not gone longer than 7.5 hrs and can come home midday if my son isn't there. I work with dog-people and can leave any time to take care of my pet if needed. I also am very close to my neighbors and they can always check on my corgi if needed.

Where would dog eat?
In the kitchen

Where would dog sleep:
Depends on the corgi. Chester liked his "cookie and crate" bedtime ritual. Sammi preferred to sleep in the finished basement during the day, next to my bed or my son's bed at night.

Play & exercise:
Two-three daily walks around the block. If he/she is dog friendly (my other two were not) then visits to one of the nearby parks would be great! We have a big backyard in case our Corgi wants to play ball, etc. (neither of mine were interested for more than a minute).

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I will be calm and prepared. I will not freak out at it and be obscene, as the Pembroke may not know exactly what he/she did wrong. I would and will never hit the pembroke, as that does not solve anything. I will firmly say "no!" and use a tone in my voice to show disappointment. But this is only if I catch him/her in the act. If i disipline after the fact, he won't understand what the correction is for.

Discipline:
being calm, yet firm. I have use reward-based training with my dog in the past.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In our home and outside when we are at home and able to take him/her out.

Who is this dog for?

A family dog

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We had our wonderful Corgi for 12 years and miss her greatly. We love the "big dog in little dog" qualities, their friendly demeanour, and overall playfulness. The breed was perfect for my four kids and I and we took our corgi with us to most places that allowed dogs.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Everything from laying on the couch watching moves, to going on walks to going sledding with us in winter. We took our Dory on family vacations to CA, AZ, and TX., where she got to swim in the oceans. Or we took her to the local lake here in WI where she could jump of the pier with the kids.
