| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
Need a performance dog. Probably agility or herding as primary. Secondary obedience
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I have always loved corgi's. Some of my friends, past and present have Pembroke's. I have seen them in herding, agility, rally, obedience and I'm always impressed with their ability to be successful in all sports, plus a greater benefit of being a great family pet. I have trained with my BC's with top trainers in the country in agility. I would partner with this dog to do herding or agility, probably obedience as well. Anymore there is a long list of activities to do with our dogs but in the past I have excelled in agility with my Aussie Amber. I also have a friend who is nearby, a long time corgi owner. Oops, it appears I answered some of this for question below.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
There are several things I love about corgi's. They should be able to herd, but in general they have high drive and speed, very friendly, able to work with their human as a real team, playful, intelligent, and just an overall great dog. Although I wish to have one under 1 yr old, and willing to wait, I would consider one 3 yrs old and under if there is a known history, pure bred, and able to adjust with a BC. My older BC has arthritis in hips and is basically on pain meds, has trouble getting around so no issue with him. Younger BC has back issue and limited in ability to perform high activity sports. I am doctoring at Ohio State Medical College in Columbus, one of the best in the nation. Being retired my partner will gets lots of training, socialized, and live in a good home. Coming back from question below I already have 5000 in Bizzy's health, overall she is doing well, physical therapy by me 2x per day! She actually loves it.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
would not reward a mistake. Just calmly try it again insuring the dog has understanding of what is being asked. If successful reward, if a difficult behavior lots of R+.
Discipline: |
try not to need too. But all dogs make errors. usually just stop the exercise and place dog in their crate and leave for short while. My experience is dogs needing discipline is mostly because they are frustrated as the exercise is not understood clearly. My goal is always to bond with the dog in a positive manner. Shaping though may be required and often is. Really if trying to stop behaviors such as jumping on people just rewarding opposing behaviors often is enough, such as sitting or lying down. Never jeopardize a good relationship, work thru the problem.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Obviously in the house and once house trained, anywhere in the house. Dog will have a mat, their own crate, door open. Most time will be with me.

I am always home except for doing errands such as grocery shopping.

In the kitchen or in the family room.
Where would dog sleep: |
Either in crate, on floor, and/or with me in the bed. My older BC will lay in bed with me and after a short time goes to his crate. Crate door is always open so he can come and go as he wants. I have a very large bedroom, may set up an x-pen initially if the dog feels more comfortable at the beginning.
Play & exercise: |
The dog will be getting more than needed, I have a large enough back yard (all fenced) to run and play, also train. I have a large garage, partially carpeted in a closed off bay to train inside. Also have lots of agility equipment.

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
This Pembroke Corgi would be for my boyfriend, Ahmed and I. We are looking to add a furry friend to our family, specifically, a Corgi.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I want to adopt a Corgi for numerous reasons. The main reason is that I believe a Corgi will be the perfect companion for my active life style. I know they have energy and we are looking for a companion that is willing to do activities with us. The second is their looks-all my life I've thought they were the cutest dogs. Moreover, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the perfect size dog for us. I am not a big fan of larger dogs, but a Corgi's weight and stature are a right fit for our home and my own comfort level with dogs.
I have done .a lot of research on the breed and have talked to families that have owned Corgis in the past. I know that Corgi require at least 30-60 minutes of activity a day, that they are witty, have big personalities, and new to be mentally challenged. I also know that they require a strict diet or they can become obese. Moreover, due to their size jumping/stair walking can be harmful for the dog's joints. Though no one in my family or social circle owns a Corgi, I have met them at events and in my neighborhood. Both Ahmed and I have interacted with Corgis and love their personalities! |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We would do a lot of different activities with my Pembroke Corgi. These activities include talking walks by Lake Michigan, running at Estabrook's dog park, hiking at Seven Bridges Park, exploring local festivals and hanging out at local restaurants and bars are that are dog friendly (just to name a few). I'd also bring him or her to family/friend gatherings so that it can get to know the dogs in our circle. Moreover, the school that I work at allows me to bring pets to work during the summer, so he could spend time with me and my co-works (and their dogs too!).

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Dogs make mistakes and we would expect that. The goal would be to remain calm, cool and collected when redirecting the Pembroke. There would be two ways to potentially handle a mistake-the first would be to say "No" in a firm voice and move on. The other way would be to focus on the positive behaviors and praise those. Being consistent with praise, tone, and directives will be keys to helping the Corgi behave appropriately.
Discipline: |
I don't know that I've every used specific methods of discipline with a dog. However, I have used support and encouragement when working with numerous types of dogs. This, again, means praising the dog and rewarding him for proper behavior. In short, our goal for our Corgi would be to re-enforce good behaviors and ignore/redirect him or her in a calm yet firm voice.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Our Pembroke would spend most of his time our house, outside exploring Milwaukee, or with visiting family.

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
No, but Ahmed works only 10 minutes from our home and is frequently returns home throughout the day for lunch and breaks. During the summer, I am home more often, as my schedule is very flexible.
Where would dog eat? |
Our Corgi would eat in the kitchen. I would have a specific spot where our corgi could would find its food and water.
Where would dog sleep: |
Our Corgi would sleep either in a crate (depending on age/behavior) or in his/her bed in our bedroom.
Play & exercise: |
I would walk our dog in the morning before going to work and Ahmed would do the same (I start working at 7, he starts at 9). Then, Ahmed would be home around 12/1 to walk and play with our Corgi again. From there I would come home around 4 and spend quality time with our Corgi-we would go on walks, play ball in the house, I would have toys for him, etc.

Description of yard: |
We do not have a yard or a swimming pool in our condo facility. What is great about my condo building is that it is extremely dog friendly. There are numerous dogs living here. No one can own a dog that is more that 50 pounds and there is an expectation that individuals take care of their dogs messes outside/in our neighborhood as needed. In addition, many people use a local dog walking company, so if need be, I could hire that same company to work with our Corgi on days when Ahmed and I cannot get home for lunch.

Christina Kralik & Ahmed Ali
Willing to train children? |
Absolutely! Though we don't have any children of our own I would take the time to teach my young family members, students, and acquaintances on how to properly treat and care for our Cori and all animals.
If we would have children in the future, I would make sure that we train our Corgi how to interact with the baby and teach the baby how to treat our Corgi. More specifically, this would mean teaching the baby how to pet our Corgi, talk to/socialize with, and how to be gentle with the dog. We would also make sure that our baby does not chase or play with him/her in an aggressive manner. In the same sense, we would be attentive to the way our Corgi treats the baby and ensure to train him on how to properly interact with our baby. |

|
Who is this dog for? |
myself and my wife | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We love the breed, we have had Corgis for the last 25 years. We lost our first one at 12 years due to a blood disease. Our current Corgi is 13 years old, and still healthy, but slowing down a lot. He lost his companion Cocker (15 years old) last month. We liked Dylan (our last Corgi) and Connor's outgoing but laid back nature, sociability, love of small children (grandchildren still visit), friendliness to other dogs, and intelligence. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
He would go on daily walks with our other Corgi, at least for as long as Connor is able. He would also go with me to Clark home weekly where Connor goes as a therapy dog. He would also travel with us, on winter trips to Florida. Hopefully the adopted Corgi will not need house training, but our other Corgis, acquired as 14 week old puppies, house trained in a week, and were very good about it.

Using direct, forceful commands that demonstrate who the leader is what the correct behavior is – good actions are rewarded, while bad actions are disciplined (time out, no time on the couch, no attention, etc.)

Demonstrate that the anti-behavior isn't rewarded – i.e. if nipping, completely ignore it and don't let them guide you. Firm commands.
