| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
For the two of us–a couple in our mid-30s for companionship.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We know that corgis are an intelligent and energetic breed, that are also adorable. Their smaller size is an important consideration for us as well, We have read that they are very empathetic and loyal, though we have not been that close to one to learn that directly. They can be demanding for attention and affection, which is perfect for us.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We live in an area that is extremely dog-friendly. So going for walks, dog parks, regular parks, short hikes, and even pet-friendly shops will be a daily routine. Playing fetch or with other toys in and outside the house will be consistent.
Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs? |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Verbal rebuke and carry the dog to where they are supposed to go.
Discipline: |
Verbal rebuke, corrective behavior, and immediately rewarding good behavior usually leads to positive results. Consistent application of discipline and rewards is important to avoid confusion.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
During work hours, in the house. After work, they would freely roam the house or yard, weather permitting.

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.
Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
Yes that would be a goal.
Also, the previous question does not have the option that is accurate for our situation. Our cat has never lived with a dog, so we don't really know if he will be friendly. Knowing his personality, he would be run away from the dog for awhile and slowly grow to accept them. |

Who is this dog for? |
The dog is for me. My last dog Face, an American Staffordshire Terrier passed away about 3 years ago. He was the sweetest most loving thing and I miss him greatly. I think it is now time for me to get another dog. I don't have any other pets. My family all lives right in the same neighborhood and my 12 year old granddaughter & 6 year old grandson visit often.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
The Pembroke would be for me. I am starting a new job as a chemistry professor at the University of Minnesota. I will be buying my first house and I would love to add a corgi to my family as we had them growing up and they are excellent dogs!
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I would love to adopt a Pembroke Walsh Corgi because they are wonderful dogs full of personality. I had a corgi when I was growing up so I am familiar with the breeds temperament and needs. Additionally, I am looking for a smaller to medium sized dog to fit my lifestyle. Also, I am going to be starting as a chemistry professor at the University of Minnesota (I currently live in Ann Arbor but will be moving in June to Minneapolis) and I will be supervising graduate students. Graduate school is very stressful so I would love to be able provide my students with the opportunity to interact with a dog as this can reduce stress levels. Additionally, I will most likely be able to bring my dog to work and he or she can stay in my office during the day.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I will commit to taking my Pembroke to the dog park. He or she will be exposed to playing with my graduate students. Additionally, my dog will go to doggy day care if I can't bring him or her to work that day.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I would understand and realize that dogs have instincts that make them behave in a certain way. What we might consider a "mistake" is probably just a result of a natural instinct or boredom. If my Pembroke made a mistake, I would try to understand why (i.e. if they chewed something they weren't supposed to they were probably bored) and try to prevent that action in the future by being proactive and making sure that the dog had more stimulation or more chew toys to prevent this action in the future.
Discipline: |
I would try to understand why a dog needed discipline and then just prevent that behavior in the future rather than punishing it. I believe positive reinforcement is a better method than punishment.
Additionally, I would take the dog to obedience classes to learn the best response to specific behaviors that might need disciple. |
||||||
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Either in my office or in doggy day care during the day. All evenings and nights would be spent in my home.

|
Who is this dog for? |
Myself | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I recently put my two elderly Pembroke Welsh Corgi males to sleep as one was paralyzed with DM and the other had DM and cancer. One was a rescue and the other came from a breeder and I had them as a pair for over 10 years. I love their intelligence, silliness, loyalty and big heart in a small body.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I took my two corgis everywhere. We traveled around the United States, we went to dog parks on a weekly basis when their health permitted, I specifically took them on a trip out to Oregon last fall as their "bucket list" trip so they could play in the ocean one last time.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
A firm voice that let's the dog know that I do not approve. With my last two corgis, this was all it took for them to know that what they did was not acceptable. I don't believe in raising my voice, just using a firm voice. I would also remove a dog from the situation if warrented.
Discipline: |
Redirection, removing dog from situation if needed, letting them know through my voice and facial features that I do not approve. Assessing the situation to try and figure out why a dog is behaving in a certain way and how I can change the environment to change the behavior.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In the house. My last two corgis had free run of the house but I would create an environment that the dog felt safest and most comfortable in. This might mean gating off a part of the house if necessary or providing a large crate for the dog to freely get in and out of if that is what makes them most comfortable.

My Pembroke Corgi is a certified therapy dog, He goes to work with me at Grinnell College every day. Students seek him out constantly for petting (he is famous as "the Physics Corgi" and is featured on the department bulletin board).. At 13-1/2 he is no longer active, but students love old dogs. I am looking for a companion to my dog and REALLY want a calm, friendly, outgoing temperament I might work with to become a certified therapy dog — though I may not do that if the dog doesn't want to. It is important that the dog be well-socialized. Honestly, I'm not in a position to spend six months working on that, but I can definitely work on Canine Good Citizen behavior.

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
myself | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I currently am owned by a Pembroke named Jack.. I love his friendliness. Jack is exceptionally chill for a Corgi. I can trust him with toddlers piled on top of him, getting his hair pulled, fingers in his mouth. Whew!. I realize most Corgis aren't that laid back. I just love him. I have gone back and forth on this — getting the same breed is NOT the same as getting the another version of mine. But he remained with his breeder for 1-1/2 years (while she looked for a good pet home for him) and he loves to be part of a Corgi pod.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I'll take the dog to school five days a week. Lots of attention from students. S/he will be walked on the school quad several times every day — room to roam. If reliable off leash, the opportunity to run back and forth a bit.. If comfortable with leash control by other people, my students love to take a break for class/study activities to go for a walk with a dog. There is a fenced off-leash dog park in town if that's the only safe way to let the dog run. I'd like to take the dog to AKC Canine Good Citizen classes. Even if already trained, I'll want to get the dog accustomed to me as source of control.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Well, depends on the mistake. Misbehavior, a sharp voice, if that works. If on leash, a sharp pull. Mostly getting the dog's attention and letting her/him know that I don't approve. Are you talking about pee/poop in the house? I am around my dog so many hours a day that this is rare. I'm pretty good about noticing when a dog needs to go out. Eating furniture rare, I'm with my dog all the time. Kenneling if the dog can't be trusted alone, but I'd prefer not to have to do that.
Discipline: |
Mostly a sharp tug on the leash. If the dog is bonded to me, a loud voice is usually enough to interrupt a behavior. I've been know to flick my finger against the end of the nose if I'm in a hurry to get the mouth away from something. Just hard enough to make the dog back up. Mostly I try to reward good behavior.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In my office at work, in the home of my friends when I visit. This means bering able to get along either other dogs. I'm looking for a well-socialized dog, Though I will train the dog to "leave it"

Description of yard: |
Details: Owner knows Jack. Trusts me as a dog owner. I don't even have a lease. We previously worked together and he saw Jack every day. Gave him the official nickname "Furry Rumba." I haven't yet discussed the possibility of adopting a second dog. I will address this issue soon. Unlikely, but if he vetoes it, I'll terminate this application immediately. The yard is large and unfenced. I allow my dog to play in the back yard. He is absolutely trustworthy and will always respond to come. No way with a new dog. I'll take it to the town fenced off-leash park until we know each other very, very well. Forever if that's what the situation calls for. Clearly I'd prefer not. Looking for a dog that's already accustomed to control — it's my job to get her/him to look to me for that.

Me | ||||||

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I’d make sure to let the dog know not to do it or reward good behavior when it is shown. Mostly would consist of “No” , or “bad boy/girl”
Discipline: |
If I see the dog doing what is not allowed I confront the dog about it. If I am not able to see the dog doing it I would not scold the dog as he/she would not know what they have done especially if time has passed.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
My Pembroke would spend most of the time outside during days unless hot/cold weather or we are inside then the Prembroke would be inside with us.
