Who is this dog for?

John and I are an older married couple who are looking for a dog. We lost our Flat Coated Retriever last February after 16 years of being blessed with her presence. It has taken us a year to recover from the loss as she was our “baby”. We are looking for a smaller dog because in the last year of our Retriever’s life we were carrying her up and down our stairs. We live on the water and have two grandchildren who visit frequently.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have done research on the breed and think a Pembrooke Welsh Corgi is a good match for us. We have never owned a Welsh Corgi before but I understand that the dog is friendly, energetic, playful and loyal. We would also need a dog that we could pickup occasionally as we are getting older🙂. We also think the breed is incredibly cute!

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Walk!!! Also, play with the toys we buy for it, take on boat rides (we own a pontoon boat) and most importantly spoil!

Play & exercise:
I take walks daily through our woods and neighborhood so our dog is a great companion for me. My husband likes to get down on the floor and play the dog.

It’s for us!

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We love their one of a kind personality. While we have not owned a Corgi, I have been doing research on the needs of the breed. Behaviors (and the need for training), such as protective of food, their intellectual abilities, energy level (although it appears to be a spectrum based on the individual dog)., and some of their common health issues.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Depending on their age, activity level and needs, we could run around the house, the yard. We live across the street from a small lake with a walking path around it. Corgi meet up get togethers, snuggling on the couch.

Who is this dog for?

This would be a family member for the both of us

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We have been doing lots of research on breeds to find a family member to match our temperaments, household style, activity level, commitment to care and involvement. We love the size, as we don't want a really small breed, but we don't want a large breed either, We are moderately active and walk 3-5 miles daily and love to be outdoors. We have a single family home and a nice sized lot in town. We also like the playful and trainable temperament aspect of the breed, as well as the fact this breed would be just as comfortable curling up between us on the couch on a cold Minnesota winter day.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We will take him for walks and play in the yard, as well as take him on day trips and camping. Fetch is definitely on the agenda as well as a good tug-of-war.
We like to garden and bike ride and would always take him with us.

Who is this dog for?

For our family – we have a 5-year-old daughter, Lucille and a 1.5-year-old adopted dog (Treeing Walker Coonhound) named Grace.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Our old dog Sally loved to play with a Corgi when she was a young dog in New York. The Corgi loved to play, could keep up with the big dogs, was curious, thoughtful and loved to learn. Since knowing this dog, we have researched Corgis and found these small herding dogs have a lot in common with our Border Collie (who we loved).

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Our current dog activities include trips to the dog park, walks in the woods, frisbee, and ball games. We would like to eventually get into agility work and/or therapy work. It will depend on the dog and what he/she is good at and likes doing. We enjoy taking our dogs on trips where we can explore nature together.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We use positive training. Our current trainer is My Hero Dog Training in Commerce Twp, MI where we work on staying positive and teaching the behavior we want. If he/she makes a mistake we would show them the correct thing to do. (Example, if the dog chews on furniture, give it a toy to chew instead. Then reward him/her for chewing on the right thing.)

Discipline:
We would try to teach the right behavior and then redirect to correct behavior and if all else fails, remove the dog from the situation.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Due to our family schedule, we utilize a dog daycare for our hound. During the weekday the dogs will be there (unless we are home) and on the evenings/weekends, the dog will be with us, doing whatever we are doing. We typically take a walk in the woods and/or visit the dog park during the weekend.

Who is this dog for?

Me and my husband

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I got Charlie as a 3 month old puppy. We had so much fun over the years: walks, obedience, agility, rally obedience and zoommies around the living room. We also had our quiet times in the evening on the couch. He was the smartest dog I ever had and I have almost always had a dog in my life (78 years). He was my first Corgi and I loved his energy and willingness. We played daily games of fetch with his favorites, a yellow ball and a toy hedgehog.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I'm not sure we would start agility again as my knees are not the best, but rally obedience was lots of fun and stress free at my level. I'm a very active retiree, take daily walks and own and ride horses. My husband has a Lab who loves to play as well.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Depends on the mistake. If the dog was somewhere he shouldn't be, I would remove him. If he was eating something I didn't want him too, I would remove it. If he was on his leash I would gently correct him, as I learned in obedience class. If he made a potty mistake I would figure it was my fault for not taking him out!

Discipline:
See above. I don't hit or kick my dogs or yank on the leash.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
With me, whether in the house, out at the barn, or in the garden.

People at home during the day?
Yes, my husband and I are both retired. We rarely go on extended vacations due to all our animals.

Where would dog eat?
I fed Charlie in the laundry room just off of the hallway and kitchen. He got his morning treat in a kong which he took to the living room.

Where would dog sleep:
I had a dog bed in the bedroom so that Charlie could be near me.

Play & exercise:
I take a daily walk and Charlie and I played fetch every day. He also liked to play tug. When I went to the barn or the garden I put him on a long leash so that he could still be with me.

How will you exercise your dog?
On leash

Description of yard:

We live on 113 acres in rural Benton County. My husband mows a large yard to keep the ticks and other bugs at bay. Our house is one tenth of a mile from the road and there is a horse pasture on one side of our driveway and a planted prairie on the other side. On the back side of the house is a large mowed area and then some brushy woods. The horse barn (2 horses and a mini-donkey) has a fenced paddock area with electric fencing as well as a board fence. There is a utility shed and 2 pigeon coops also skirting the yard.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
I have 2 barn cats (4 and 17 years) who got along just fine with Charlie. They loved him and would rub on him whenever they were outside when we were. There were never any hostilities and I'm sure I could work to resolve any in the future.

Who is this dog for?

My son and I are looking to add another addition to our family. I recently purchased our first home and we are looking to get our Bernese Mountain dog a sibling.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I love the way they look and everything I've researched about them shows me they make great family dogs. I have not had this breed before, but am looking to have a small dog that I can cuddle with.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I would like to take him/her to parks, on walks, and on vacation with our family. I would also like him/her to be a good sibling to our current dog, Chewbacca. I would like to watch them play together and run around the backyard!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would verbally correct him/her, and show him/her what to chew on or where to go afterwards.

Discipline:
Verbally correct them, and redirect them with the appropriate place/behavior

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Free range of our house. Unless it is a puppy, then I would put him in a larger cage to stay in for a few hours while I am at work, since it would be potty training.
