We do live in an apartment complex that has an attached yard for dogs as well as a park around the corner. However, since it is still an apartment, we would ideally like to be matched with a dog with a moderate energy level. A VERY active dog would probably not be well suited for us.

Who is this dog for?

This Pembroke is for my husband and I. We do not have children, nor do we have any plans to have children.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Our experience fostering dogs has given us the opportunity to learn what types of characteristics would be a good match for us. While we have never had a Corgi, we have fallen in love with the ones we've met and enjoyed learning about their personalities from their owners. We appreciate the fact that they are smart dogs with large personalities, while also being affectionate.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Along with walks, we do plan on playing catch in the park or going to the lake. We would also practice some obedience outside, for example we have a dog bridge in the yard. Along with outdoor exercise, we would also have mental exercises. For example, hiding treats and other items for them to find and teaching them tricks.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
First, it would depend on when the "mistake" happened. If I come home to find a mess, it's best to not acknowledge it as they’re not able to associate this as a "mistake" since it has already passed, it’s just confusing to the dog and unfair.

If it's a mistake in the moment, I would first give a verbal cue and try to redirect them. For example, if they're chewing something they shouldn't I would give a verbal cue and redirect them to the correct toy.

Discipline:
I think one of the best methods for discipline first comes from creating a routine. Routines help to eliminate bad behaviors from starting. I also like to use positive reinforcement. For example, we had a foster dog who routinely eliminated in the hallway. As soon as he started we would give a loud verbal cue to stop, then when he went outside he would receive a treat and positive praise–we were able to stop him from eliminating in the hallway.

We had another foster dog who had a bit of separation anxiety and destroyed stuff when left alone. It was an uphill battle, but we crate trained her and eventually she learned to love her crate and would go in on her own. She also stopped destroying stuff and was able to be left alone and not put in the crate.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
While we do live in an apartment, and this is where our Pembroke would spend most of their time. We will also be going on at least 2 walks a day with outdoor playtime.

People at home during the day?
Yes, while we both work full-time, we are often at home during the work day. During the week Markus frequently works from home, on average 2-3 times per week. I also work one block from home and come home during the day for lunch and breaks.

Where would dog eat?
We have a specific spot between the kitchen and living room.

Where would dog sleep:
They would have their own bed to sleep on in our bedroom.

Play & exercise:
We will go on at least 2 walks per day with playtime. We enjoy spending time at the lake and a nearby park, so there will be lots of time for playing catch and meeting other dogs.

We will also provide mental exercise with games we can play at home, like hiding treats and other items. Hopefully also teaching some fun tricks.

Depending on what the circumstance was, I may kennel the dog after telling them no and removing from the situation.

Who is this dog for?

Me and my current PWC, Abby. I adopted her through your organization in 2009.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I got my first Corgi, Mick, in 2002 at 8 weeks old from a breeder because I, yes, had always loved the breed. Mick and I did agility, canine good citizen, and other general training, kayaked together for most of his life, played fetch every day, and generally had a great time. When he was seven, I adopted Abby from your organization so he would have a companion. They were a great pair until his death this past summer. Abby has adapted well to being a single dog, but I think she would benefit from having a buddy again.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I would hope to take any dog on the water, as I do with Abby, go for walks, play fetch, and hang out.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Most mistakes are just that mistakes, doing something they don't know yet is wrong, or generally not the end of the world. A firm "no" may be appropriate but that's pretty much all I've ever needed with either Abby or Mick.

Discipline:
I've taught both of my Corgi the usual commands (e.g., come, sit, off, no, leave it, etc.) through positive reinforcement and repetition.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
I am at work during the day and Abby is at home. When I'm home, she's hanging out with me or sometimes snoozing in her own house.

House dog

People at home during the day?
No. I occasionally use a dog-walking service, but not routinely.

Where would dog eat?
In the kitchen, where Abby eats.

Where would dog sleep:
Abby has her own house (a dog crate with no door) and she sleeps there and on my bed, as did my other Corgi. I would have another house for the new Corgi.

Play & exercise:
A new Corgi would get daily exercise on walks with me and Abby, as well as play in the yard. If the new one is a fetcher, we'll go to the local park or wherever there's a lot of space to run. It all depends on what the new dog might prefer (e.g., Abby is not the least bit interested in fetch).

Who is this dog for?

This Pembroke would be for myself and Nicholas Chinaris. We have been wanting to adopt a dog for a long time and are finally in a situation where we are ready to adopt! We also have one roommate who would be available to help care for the Pembroke.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We adore Pembroke Welsh Corgis. Specifically, we love their "pack" mentality and are seeking a dog that is both affectionate and intelligent. We also feel that the corgi's size and temperament is perfect for our current apartment living situation. In addition, we appreciate corgis' obedience once trained, and their loyalty to their families. After researching the corgi's daily care and needs, we also believe that the corgi's exercise needs would complement our current lifestyle.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We live very close to Lake Michigan, so we would love to take our corgi on trips to the lake. Our neighborhood is filled with dogs, and it is very rare that we leave the house without seeing someone walking their dog. Therefore, we hope to allow our Pembroke to interact and play with other dogs. We also have a park across the street where we can let our corgi play as part of his/her walks and exercise. Lastly, we own a car, so will have the ability to drive our Pembroke further distances for training, medical needs, fun trips, etc.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We believe that positive reinforcement is the best way to discourage a dog's mistakes. Nick, having raised and trained two dogs and fostered several others, has found success with this practice. Staying patient and level-headed is the best way to teach a dog the right way to behave. Even when our dog makes a mistake, we will always treat him or her with love.

Discipline:
Teaching a dog single-word vocal commands accompanied with hand gestures. We feel that using this method to establish clear rules from the beginning leads to a happy, healthy understanding between us and our dog.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Our Pembroke would spend most of his or her time with us in our apartment. He or she would also accompany us on our frequent walks, especially in the park across the street from our building. Even on cold days, we enjoy being outside and would love having our Pembroke by our side.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes. The three people living in our apartment all have staggered work schedules, so there is almost always at least one person home.

Where would dog eat?
There is an area in our kitchen where we would set out his or her food bowl and water dish.

Where would dog sleep:
We would buy a doggie bed for him or her, and try to place it where he or she is most comfortable. Either in our bedroom or living room, depending on the Corgi's preference.

Play & exercise:
There are doggie play dates scheduled by our neighbors living with dogs, which we would love to bring our Corgi to. We would also love to have a Corgi with us on walks and visits to the park or Lake Michigan.
In regards to the question below, we would keep our dog on the leash while walking around our neighborhood. We have many pretty neighborhood streets surrounding our building with trees, bushes, and grass, so the corgi would not be restricted solely to hard, city surfaces. The park across the street from our apartment is fenced in, so we would be able to let the corgi off of the leash while playing there.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We love Pembrokes because they're so kind with humans and other animals, and we love how smart and clever they are. We've had relatives with corgis that we absolutely love interacting with, and Lucy's workplace has two corgis that come in and out of her work place that she's gotten to know over the past two years whom she loves playing with. We also love how fast they run, it's so much fun to watch them bolt off when you're throwing toys for them. We've done research on the breed, watched some informational videos to understand what the typical characteristics of the dogs are, and how to care for them best.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We have a pretty big fenced in yard with a pool that we love taking our current dog in, so we'd love for the corgi to join us! We live in a quiet neighborhood with some parks and church yards that we walk to as well.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Try to determine why the mistake was made, i.e. was it human error? Were we not clear on something and confused the dog? Or does the dog require further training? With our current dog, we use commands like "no" and "down"

Discipline:
We use positive reinforcement techniques – reward the dog wth praise, and if motivated by treats, use dog approved treats. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Stay calm with the dog and watch to see if they understand what you are asking them to do.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Our current dog has full access to our home. We would acclimate a new dog to our home and as they become comfortable they would also have full range. The dog would also have our fenced in back yard.

Yes. Ann works full time, but is 5 minutes from home, and usually comes home at lunch to walk the dog. Ann's husband is retired and is home most days.

Where would dog eat?
In the kitchen. They would have their own designated food bowl and water bowl.

Where would dog sleep:
They would have their own dog bed. Once comfortable in our home the bed can be placed in any room. Our current dog sleeps in the master bedroom on a dog bed.

Play & exercise:
The dog would be walked every day and played with by throwing toys, tug of war and interacting with our other dog. When Lucy is home from school she can take the dog on runs with her. The dog will frequently be taken to parks to run and play.

The street behind our house is a U-shaped court that provides a large easement of land, so we are not close to our neighbors.

Myself.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I love the breed and how affectionate, energetic, and fun they are. I have done extensive research on the breed and believe that this breed would fit my lifestyle. I think that their playful and loveable personality along with their temperament would compliment my active lifestyle.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I would go on long walks with he/she, there is a dog park that I would take he/she on a fairly weekly basis. I would take him to a dog beach and pretty much bring he/she anywhere that allow dogs. I also would sign up for training classes and/or agility classes for a fun activity that is mentally challenging along with a good source of exercise.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would take this mistake as a learning opportunity for both myself and the PWC. I would never get visibly angry – I am quite patient and reserved myself. I would offer more training, depending on what lesson needs to be reinforced. I like to incorporate training during daily walks and at home.

Discipline:
I have used the "time out" method in the past with my lab/hound mix. This seems to be very helpful in allowing them to reflect. I would never ignore a bad behavior but offer additional training in order to help improve their behavior.
