| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
The two of us. We are an empty nest family that have had a few PWC, Currently have 7 year old Forest,, wanting a companion for him.(gentle)
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We have enjoyed each of our Corgi's and our son's Corgi when he lived with us. They each had their own personality but each loved people. Roxie was the most fiesty but she loved children and was very gentle with them. We know that Corgi's are herding dogs and we have seen that in each of ours. Whether it is squirrels or birds or kids they each showed the herding. Max loved to play with our daughter when she was an adolescence giving the whole family lots of fun. Our Corgi's have been very intelligent and very loving. Max learned how to open the gate to the back yard with his snout. We had each Corgi from puppy stage. Max was bold and playful. Tripper our lab collie mix was the best watch dog and was great with the kids. She was very protective and never needed a leash.. We used a leash but when we camped, which we still do, she would not leave the campsite. My husband picked Roxie because she was the fiesty one of the litter. She was very gentle and caring with all kids and protected Forest when we brought him home. Roxie was also playful. Forest is kind and a bit nervous. He has the least amount of herding tendency. . Our vet has told us that we have well behaved Corgi's. Besides they are just so cute. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Same as Forest, go with us wear-ever we are able to take him, rides in the car, camping. If unable to go due to weather Forest will stay home in our large back yard which is fenced, in safe weather, or in the house as long as we are expected to be back home in a few hours. We have children and neighbors that are happy to tend to Forest when we are out a little bit longer. We go for walks. Forest has squeaky toys he likes to play keep away so that we will chase him. Each of our Corgi's had a specific bedtime they made and stuck to. Roxie would even head to bed and stop and give us "the Look" if we stayed up late. LOL |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
It depends on the mistake. if they chew, tell them no sternly acting as Alpha. if wanders from yard call to come back and praise when they return so they will come in the future. If they mess in the house take them out at regular intervals tell them to potty then praise them and return inside. Eventually you would be able to tell them to potty and they will.
Discipline: |
When Forest barks and starts toward a stranger we tell him to stop. If he continues we tie him up on leash. When he was small we did not feed him from the table so he would not beg. (that is until my hubby started tossing him bites of his food. ) However he still does not beg. If he jumps on people we turn and ignore him until he stops then praise him on all fours. When he was younger and would nip I would make dramatic response that I was hurt. He stopped. When I discipline I say "no" or "stop" without saying his name. At times depending on the situation I will put my hand on his head or back to get his attention.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
in the house or in our fenced in backyard, or on the road with us. He also goes camping with us.

|
Who is this dog for? |
Laura Conger (Applicant 1)
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I grew up with dogs and am definitely a dog person who is looking for a furry companion to share my life with. I prefer medium/large dogs because their temperment is usually more compatible with my personality. However, I don't have the space for a very large dog and am not physically big enough to deal with wrangling a big dog by myself. I really like corgis because they have a large dog personality inside of a smaller body and the look of Pembrokes is so sweet! All the Pembrokes I have met before are sweet, playful, and outgoing – something that I truly appreciate about dogs in general.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I would really enjoy taking my Pembroke on walks, to play in the dog park, hang out with friends (human or dog), and if he/she is up for it take them onboard my kayak to ride around and/or play in the lake near my apartment. I would also be happy to snuggle up to my Pembroke in the evenings or simply hang out a relax together.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
If it is early on in our relationship, I would gently but firmly show him/her the correct action until he/she understands what I am looking for. If this is a longer term problem, I would make firmly let him/her know that the bad behavior is not acceptable and also try different positive training methods to encourage the right behavior.
Discipline: |
Vocal displeasure and hand signals are a good place to start if this is the first time an issue appears; withholding positive attention if the behavior is recurring but not immediately harmful to the dog/humans; repetitive deterring of bad behavior using things like non-toxic scents, removing items that instigate the bad behavior from the dog's territory, and minimal physical restraint if necessary.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In my apartment or a local doggie daycare (when I am not at home) and the surrounding areas (when we are together)

|
Who is this dog for? |
Me. | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I love how intelligent, protective, and lovable corgis are. I adore how they look. When my kids were young we absolutely wanted a corgi, rescued one in need, and loved him so much. We had him for 10 years through thick and thin.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I live right on a 10 mile river walking trail, with a dog park 300 yards away. I can bring my corgi to work, which is a 15 minute walk, and keep in my office. Would like to train it in agility. I have a vacation property where my dog can be safely off leash. I may even get some chickens he or she can herd 🙂 Cudding, brusing, playing in the house. My adult children will also love to visit and play with my corgi. |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
First, I would work from minute 1 to establish a caring rapport with my corgi. In that context I would let it know with tone of voice and facial expression that it behaved wrongly. It might need something like a time out. But I would prefer to rely on positive reinforcement for good behavior.
Discipline: |
Positive and selective negative reinforcement with rewards (praise, pets, snacks, etc.). Never hit, never yell at (our previous corgi had a bad early life experience in a puppy mill, we were told, and had some psychoses around closing doors, loud noises, etc. so I am well aware that corgis can both be strong-willed and independent but also sensitive.)
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In my very large house, some out in fenced yard, and out on walks and playing as much as possible. I also have a housemate who is committed to helping care for a corgi.

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
For my husband and me. We have been owned by Bernese Mountain Dogs for the past 25 years and our current dog is in her final stage of osteosarcoma. As older dog owners, we don't feel we are strong enough to handle a strong muscular dog like a berner again. My interest in corgis was piqued because of the AKC description of a corgi as a big dog in a small dog's body. I love to walk and miss my daily walks with my best buddy, Etta.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I am most fond of large breed dogs and that is the type of dog we have had the most of. When our current Bernese was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 5, I miss her companionship on my daily walks. She is a huge inspiration to get up and move. I read about many breed characteristics on the AKC website and was drawn to the describtion of a corgi as a large dog in a small dog's body. I wan a dog that can be my companion for walks and outdoor activities. We live in Northern Michigan and I stay active all year round. I read that corgis do well in cold snowy climates, which describes where we live to a T.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Walks, visits to the lake, I am also interested in investigating agility which my berner had no interest in .

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I have had best results with positive training and redirection.
Discipline: |
Until the dog is comfortable with our home, I like to keep the dog tethered to me on a 6 ft leash. That way, I can minimize correction for bad behavior but concentrate on positive reinforcement. My husband is a retired behavior psychologist with 30 + years in behavior modification techniques.

We have always designated eating areas away from the dinner table for our dogs. Outside of training, all treats are given at their eating area to minimize begging during our meal times.
Where would dog sleep: |
In a crate in our bedroom initially. After training is complete and we are confident in the dogs behavior, the crate door is opened and the dog can sleep in a dog bed.
Play & exercise: |
I am retired and my husband is semi-retired. I love to stay active and would enjoy a buddy to accompany me while I am doing outdoor gardening.

Us | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Over the years we have come to love the look and personality traits of Pembroke Welsh Corgis. While small and commanding, they also have big hearts. Though we don't have experience with Corgis themselves, we have both had dogs growing up and feel we are up for the challenge. We have gotten to know a few Corgis that we've absolutely loved and can't wait to become Corgi parents ourselves. We have done some research into overall temperament and health issues such as hip dysplasia, degenerative myeloplathy, and especially obesity. We understand that while these dogs are cute and lovable, they are also originally bred to be herding dogs and need to be treated as such. Living in the city would not hinder our dog's health, we are close to lots of dog parks and good veterinarians.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
– Go on long walks around the city – Dog park socialization – Training classes – Vacationing/nature trips – Snuggles |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
It would depend on the mistake. Overall, we would be firm and repetitive with training. We would use verbal commands to let our Corgi know they did something wrong. For example, should the issue be biting or jumping we would use a time-out as a way of showing our Corgi that is not good behavior.
Discipline: |
Treats and praise for good behavior. For bad behavior, verbal commands and time-outs.
