Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I love that they are like big dogs in small bodies. They are strong willed and confident dogs and that is very appealing to me. I have not been around many, but I do have a close friend with a Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy and she is very energetic and she does whatever she sets her mind on. I love it! I have done research on the breed and I believe that this breed is perfect for us. |

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
Ourselves. | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We are looking for a dog for our apartment and have always loved seeing/learning about Corgis. Though we have had minimal interactions with this type of breed, the primary applicant has had other dogs play with Corgis at his local dog park. I think the best part about the Pembroke Welsh Corgi breed is how active and friendly they can be. As young adults, we are looking for a dog to not only fit our lifestyles but our personalities by being sociable with other people or dogs. Since committing to finding a Corgi for our home, we have done extensive research that ranges from the types of food, activity levels, health issues, and daily care to ensure a long healthy life.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We would love to go for walks, runs, and play around in the grassy areas just outside of our apartments. Since both of us are recently out of college and retiring from playing NCAA sports, we would like to have a companion to join us on different adventures.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
As a former owner of multiple dogs, we would handle this situation by not showing no reinforcement towards the dog such as not shouting, yelling, being physical, etc. Instead, we will give them more positive reinforcements when they do a desirable behavior in the appropriate place such as peeing outside, chewing on their toys, and obeying commands when given. When they do this behavior, we will provide them with praise and a treat to reinforce this positive behavior.
Discipline: |
We will reinforce the positive behaviors and not reinforce negative behaviors. Since the Corgi might not understand the problem with the undesirable behavior, we may need to make more accommodations around the Corgi such as taking them out more often, keeping a closer eye on what they are doing, and making sure they chew on their toys instead of other objects. We want to make sure they are not living in fear due to intimidation, but showing them, they get treats or loving affections when they play with their toys or go to the bathroom.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
The Pembroke would spend most of their day in the apartment which both of us live in every day. We would also take them outside for a walk, to use the bathroom, car rides, or to the dog park during these days.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes. The primary applicant is a full-time student but is home most days during the week and weekend. Both applicants come home around 6 pm from work or school allowing us to take care of the Corgi and attend to their needs.
Where would dog eat? |
The Corgi would eat in the kitchen area on the hardwood floors in case of spillage from water or food during eating time.
Where would dog sleep: |
They would either sleep in the bed or bedside of the applicants. The door will also be left open in case the Corgi becomes too hot so they can lay on the tile or hardwood floor of the bathroom.
Play & exercise: |
Since we are both young adults, we would regularly take them on walks, runs, or play with them in the large grassy areas all around our apartment complex. We would also love to visit the dog park which is a block away so it can socialize and have the freedom to run around without being on a leash. We would also give them plenty of dog toys such as balls or chew toys to play with inside the apartment or outside.

I am a firm believer in positive reinforcement. All dogs make mistakes, as do people. If the corgi has behavioral problems, I am unable to alleviate with my training as a veterinary student, I would seek training guidance from someone with more experience than me in fixing the behavior.

myself | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I love the sweet, fun and affectionate personality. Years ago when my children were little I owned a Corgi and fell in love then with the breed. I had that Corgi until she passed away at age 13. I currently have a 1 1/2 year old female Corgi.

We are avid campers and spend a lot of time outdoors. We have a pontoon and spend time swimming and camping all summer. I am currently researching on training for agility.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
For potty training I would put the puppy or dog where I want them to use the bathroom, repetition and frequently putting them outside so they learn where to go.
Discipline: |
Distraction from what they are doing wrong, make a loud noise to get their attention from what they are doing.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In our home with us or up north in the summer. We both are nurses and work opposite shifts so their is always someone home.

I move slow due to a joint disease. two 30 minute walks a day are about all I can handle, with potty breaks as needed of course. I would love maybe an older corgi, who is a little bit slower moving too, like me. We have plenty of walking trails nearby, so no shortage of place to take them.

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
Us! An engaged couple | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I grew up with a corgi, and she was wonderful. I love their size, which is a major factor as I have some joint issues, and larger dogs jumping up can hurt me and knock me over. They are also smart, and mine was very sassy, which I loved as well.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
So, we are looking for a lower energy dog, so an older one would be ideal. As mentioned previously, I have joint problems, so I typically do two 30 minute walks a day, with potty breaks as needed. Im sadly not able to run anymore, and I am unable to take them on several mile walks several times a day. As far as indoor activities, puzzle toys, kongs, I really am looking for an older dog who maybe moves a bit slow like I do to enjoy some nice strolls, naps and cuddling if desired by said corgi.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Tell him no, and try to redirect them. For example, our previous dog took a while to house train, when we saw her start peeing in the house we would say no and immediately take her outside.
Discipline: |
Positive reinforcement. Treating and praising when the corgi does something correctly. Going back to previous example, we would praise our dog and treat her every time she peed outside.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In our apartment. | ||||||

|

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes, I am home the majority of the day. I do leave typically 3 or 4 days a week for a few hours for doctor's appointments, but I am mostly home. My fiance is gone a typical 8 hour work day.
Where would dog eat? |
In the kitchen | ||||||
Where would dog sleep: |
Wherever they want. Our previous dog liked her crate and chose to sleep in there, we are also fine having dogs on the bed, or in a dog bed in our room
Play & exercise: |
Sadly, as mentioned previously, I cant run or take them on super long walks as mentioned earlier. So two 30-45 minute walks a day around the trails. (with potty breaks as needed of course) We also have nice dog parks nearby we can take them to a few times a week so they can run more. But, for that reason a low energy corgi would be best for our lifestyle.
How will you exercise your dog? |
On leash | ||||||

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
I am unable to work with a dog who is cat reactive. We sadly do not have the space to isolate my cats long term, we do have a second bedroom the kitties can be in for a week or so while the new dog adjusts, but any longer than that and my cats become stressed. I am willing to work on if the dog is interested in chasing a bit, or trying to play too much. But I am unable in my current set up to work with a dog who is aggressive towards the cats and attempting to bite them. I am willing to work with leash reactivity, dogs who are shy and are terrified of people, but cat reactivity is the one behavior I just don't have a good set up to work with
My one cat is very friendly towards dogs and wants to be everyone's best friend and she will go up and sniff the dog. The other one is aloof and doesn't want anything to do with them . |

|
Who is this dog for? |
Both Adam and I | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
1. Every Pembroke that I have ever met has been very friendly and sweet, which we want in a dog. We do hope to have kids someday, so we don't want a dog that is not friendly. 2. Pembrokes are one of my favorite breeds, and one of the breeds that my husband and I can agree on. I grew up with only large dogs; he grew up with only small dogs, but we both agree that a Corgi would be perfect. 3. I have read about Pembrokes, both online and in books. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
1. I am an avid runner. I would take him/her on easy runs (not my workouts), which usually consist of a mile or two at a very easy pace. 2. All the walkies! We have access to the Fred Meijer Standale Trail from our apartment. We are also only a five minutes' drive from Millenium Park, Aman Park, and downtown GR. 3. Dog parks |

I would firmly yet kindly let him/her know that it was a mistake, but I do not believe in yelling at dogs, kicking/hitting them, or any other form of intense punishment.
Discipline: |
Positive affirmation/rewards. That works with my students, and it worked with Kiwi, our Lab.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In our apartment or on walkies/car rides with us. We moved to Walker recently, but we plan to find dog-friendly places to go so our dog can go with us whenever we go out.

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
The pembroke would be for both Alex and Elise. We live together and are eager for the opportunity to rescue.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I (Elise) have always been a huge dog lover. Having grown up with at least two dogs in the house at all times, it has felt odd for me not to have a dog in the house as an adult. My aunt and uncle had a Pembroke named Rosey and it's safe to say she was my favorite part of family gatherings. I loved her mannerisms and watching the connection she had with my aunt. She was a little bit noisey, which bothered my uncle from time to time, but I loved watching her interactions with my aunt.
As I look to get my first animal as an adult, I've thought long and hard about how I want to get a dog. My intermediate family has always had mutts adopted from shelters, but I have always wanted a pembroke after meeting Rosey. I can't make myself buy a puppy because I grew up with the "adopt, don't shop" mentality. I feel the opportunity to rescue a pembroke would be the perfect solution. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Alex and I live an active lifestyle. We go on a walk together after work every day, which we would of course love to include a pembroke on. We also have a dog park less than a block away from our place. As mentioned before, dogs are a pretty big part of family life, so lots of doggy dates as well. I'd also love to work on tricks and obedience – one of my favorite things to do with my dogs growing up. I cannot wait to spoil my dog.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Very dependent on the mistake, but if this is referring to an accident in the house, I would simply clean up the mess and make note to make sure it wasn't a health problem or an issue with the duration of time since they last went outside.
Mistakes happen! |
||||||
Discipline: |
Clapping or a loud noise for when they are caught in the act "Go to your bed" or "go to your crate" for bad behavior |
