Who is this dog for?

We would like to adopt a rescue Pembroke for our own home.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We have rescued two dogs in the past (a Fox Hound and a Border Collie/Spaniel mix). They both lived well into their teens, with the last one passing two months ago. We knew we wanted a smaller dog as our next rescue. When we spoke with our dog trainer about adopting another dog he suggested a Corgi rescue. We have always considered corgis to be a sweet breed as well.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Regular walks of course. We also would want a dog who would be up for a car ride or a weekend adventure. And movie nights at home.

Yes

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We try to reinforce positive behaviors when they occur. If we see an undesirable behavior we try to correct it into a desirable behavior and then give a reward.

Discipline:
We use “no” or “leave it” and try to encourage the dog to sit calmly and distract them from the object that is causing the reaction.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Our rescues are crated at night or when we leave until we feel they can be left on their own. After that they can sleep wherever they want.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We owned a corgi mix that lived to be 17 (along with other mixed breeds that lived to be 13-15). I love that corgis have big personalities despite their small-medium size. They are brave and a little pushy but are also very sweet, goofy, and playful. I also love to see them run—their little legs can really keep up!

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Cuddle, go on walks, go to dog parks, go hiking, play ball in the backyard, do running tricks or fun drills/“jobs” in the backyard.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
– Verbal command (no, off, etc.)
– Show them the right way (take them off the furniture, take them outside, etc.)
– Praise them for the correct behavior

Discipline:
– First try to prevent the issue, distraction, etc.
– Firm verbal feedback (no, off)
– Praise (positive/happy voice)
– Reward (affection, treat)

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
At home inside (during the day, 4 days/week), outside for walks or playing with the kids in the evenings and I’m weekends. I also work from home 1 day/week, so I’d be home with her (inside, in the backyard on my laptop, and we can go on an extra walk on that day).

House dog

People at home during the day?
1 day each weekday, yes. Also yes on the weekends. We keep most weekends low key.

Where would dog eat?
It depends what she’s been eating beforehand in the beginning at least. We haven’t had a dog in a couple of years, but the foods we fed past dogs include homemade dog food (meat plus kale or green beans), Evo, Natura, and Blue Buffalo. Different dogs of ours had different diets, and one had to have a novel protein so I ended up making her food.

Where would dog sleep:
On a dog bed or in a crate

Play & exercise:
She can play every night with my kids in the yard (ball, running, jumping). Also, we’ll take her on daily walks, and I can give her an extra walk on my work-from-home day. On weekends there’s even more time for play in the yard or at the forest preserve or dog park.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
Chain link, 4’ high. It is currently open on one side for about 20’. We just bought the home in the summer and will be finishing off the fence line.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Wendy Zachrisen

Willing to train children?
Yes, and my kids have had quite a bit of dog experience. We’ve owned 3 dogs (all deceased now due to old age) since my kids were born. They also have a dog at their dad’s house, their grandparents have a dog, and my best friend (like their aunt) has 3 dogs (including a herding breed) and is involved in a rescue. We frequently spend time with her dogs and foster dogs.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I had a best friend named Riley that we just had to put down in October.
He was a wonderful 11 year old Welch Cardigan.
I have loved the breed since I first saw one, as a child.
They are so spunky, vivacious, smart, loving and loyal.
My heart is empty since he is gone.
I need another good friend!
My husband loves the breed as much as I do.
I prefer the Welsh Cardigan but would definitely love a Pembroke if one becomes available.

Who is this dog for?

Me, and my 10 year old Westie

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I love how smart and outgoing they are. They always seem friendly to people, I like that they are not timid, wallflowers.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
LOTS of stuffed animals in the house. Plenty of fetch and chase with my Westie. Leash walks, Winston LOVES to go out on walks. I live not to far from a beautiful dog park, (Katherine Legge Memorial Park), where they get plenty of run time in, and plenty of squirrels to chase. When Emma was healthy the two dogs had playtime first thing in the morning, after their breakfast. In the evenings, after dinner, they ran around boxing, playing chase, trying to beat each other to get the stuffed animal I had thrown,

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Since its an older dog I am seeking, I assume the dog will be housebroken. But, because of a new environment, I;m sure accidents will happen, I think the key is to keep a schedule for "out" time. The only way to break that habit is get a routine/schedule going. Also, I have a secret weapon named Winston. When Winston wants to go out he sneezes. One night he sneezed, and I let him and Emma my Sheltie out. He just stood in the yard, while Emma did "business". Winston can actually smell when a female needs to go out, and he relays the message to me, for her.

Discipline:
A firm, low guttural voice for corrective behavior. Then, once they know they have messed up, I ignore them for awhile.
If the dog has done something positive, I reward that behavior with praise, love, and sometimes a small treat.

Who is this dog for?

Family pet for Elizabeth Waskom-Sisco and Brin Sisco

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We appreciate their temperament and quirky personalities. They are not generally high energy which would be a good match for our family. They are not super small but smaller than most dogs and since we keep our pets indoors unless supervised play time outdoors or on a walk, our home would better suit a smaller breed. They are incredibly adorable with their large ears and little chunky backsides. We do not purchase any animal. They are either adopted or from someone who had to part with the animal. Adoption fees are to be expected.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Cuddle time on the couch, bed, etc. Outdoor play time that will be fully supervised. Walks as needed on our dead end street which causes limited traffic to come through our neighborhood.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Address the behavior immediately in a calm manner so as to not incite anxiety. Any animal will quickly lose any connection to whatever mishavior has occurred if the connection is delayed. Positive reinforcement is preferred but negative can be used as well. Such as the corgi urinating indoors-typically s/he receives a small treat when coming in from using restroom. I would take the corgi outdoors following an indoor accident and allow the corgi time to go potty. However, no treat given at all even if corgi urinates outdoor.

Discipline:
Mostly positive reinforcement but some negative reinforcement as applicable. Each animal is different and what works for one pet may not work at all for another. Patience is crucial with any pet.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Indoors, likely on a county or bed. Our animals are indoors only with any time outdoors as closely supervised. Any pet deserves excessive physical affection and to be spoiled.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
No. I leave around 9-930a most works days and get home between 5-6p. My spouse works from 630a and is home between 230-3p. This results in a limited amount of time that s/he would be without a caregiver.

Where would dog eat?
Indoors in a designated area of the kitchen. Some animals do well with set feeding times while others are grazers and may require a constant supply of food.

Where would dog sleep:
On a couch, bed in spare bedroom or in our bed in the master bedroom. Animals are most welcome in our bed.

Play & exercise:
It would depend on the animal, but there is a long hallway to play fetch in and areas to get down on the ground and play with s/he. We have a large backyard to utilize and an unfinished basement with large open spaces for playtime. Otherwise, basement door stays locked.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Description of yard:

Front yard of moderate size with a large maple tree. Reside of a dead ended street in a long established area. Not a lot of vehicle traffic. Backyard is very large, flat with only an old close line and basketball goal. Ample room for a dog to run, play, explore, etc.

Willing to train children?
The only young child that visits our home is my five year old niece. She has been raised from birth around animals, primarily house cats.

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Current pets:

Current pets dog friendly?

No, some of our current pets are not friendly toward dogs

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Both of our cats have a history of abuse before coming to our home. One cat has been abused far more than the other and is highly skittish. She will not know aggression in any way but will not befriend any animal in the home. She never has for the past 11 years I have had her. Our other cat is very outgoing and very loving. Her abuse seems to be only related to food and eating as she was absolutely tiny when we got her and very underweight. She does very well to any changes in the home.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Who is this dog for?

This corgi will be for myself, Meagan.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I've wanted to adopt a corgi since I was a little girl. A woman at my grandmother's apartment complex used to own a corgi, and when I used to come and visit, I would go on walks with them. I got to walk and play with the corgi, and thought it was cutest dog!! Ever since then, I've known I wanted one.
Specifically, I love their stature and attitude. They're smart, obedient, independent, loving, and so much more. Over the past few years, I've done my own research on the breed, hoping to have my own someday.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
There are so many activities I would do with my corgi! I'm an active person myself, so we'd go on plenty of walks! There are also a few dog parks in my area, so we'd have to try that too!. Even though I like my exercise, I also love days where I can relax on the couch, so I hope the corgi would like that too! Also, a lot of my friends and family have dogs, so I would bring my corgi with me to a lot of events to play with the other dogs. I also never oppose to a game of fetch or tug-o-war!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If the corgi makes a mistake, I would try to catch it right away. Use words like "no" to let the corgi something was done wrong. Correct the behavior asap.

Discipline:
I would try to use constructive punishment, so they would quickly learn what they did wrong and try to do better. Also would use words like No, and train them properly. I would never hit a dog.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
The corgi would spend most of their time at my house in Duluth, MN.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, there are people at my house throughout the day. I currently live with my boyfriend and another couple. There is always at least one person at home.

Where would dog eat?
Since my current roommate also has a dog, I would have the corgi eat in my bedroom to avoid the chance of any protective/aggressive behaviors towards the food. My roommate's dog doesn't possess these behaviors, but better to be safe!

Where would dog sleep:
The corgi would either sleep in my bed, or on a doggy bed near mine.

Play & exercise:
The corgi will have a lot of opportunities to play and exercise. I plan on walking the corgi at least twice a day. Once right away in the morning, and once at night If I have the day off, or extra time in the day, I'd love to take the corgi outside to play or to parks! There are so many trails in Duluth we'd have to try!

Description of yard:

We live on the corner lot of the block. The yard is private, surrounded by bushes and trees making it hard to see the yard. There is a spot in the back yard for two cars to park, and an area big enough for the corgi to play. However, the yard isn't fenced. I would keep the corgi on a long leash, just incase. There's also a park kitty corner from our house.
