We both work full time jobs less than 20 minutes commute from our home, with flexibility to work from home when needed. However, our dogs typically would be home alone M-Th from 8:30-5:30. We have provided safe space kennels when younger, and allowed our dogs to have free reign of the house as they were older and more trustworthy.
We are almost always home on nights and weekends. We never board animals, and either take them with us on vacation or have a pet sitter stay with them in our home overnight. We have a lot of 'dog friends' and have a pet hedgehog and our yard has many squirrels, rabbits, birds, etc., so any new dogs should not have a strong prey drive or be overly aggressive to other animals. Tucker became more aggressive/grumpy toward hyper dogs as he aged and became more disabled, and I am comfortable managing warning aggression (don't come any closer) but not actively attacking. While we do not have children and do not plan to have any, we do have young nieces and nephews so can not adopt a dog with any child or people aggression. |

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
My husband and I lost our 12 year old corgi, Tucker, in September. I got Tucker as a puppy, and he was diagnosed with degenerative myeleopothy or a similar neuro disease in 2015. For three years we managed his disease progression with medication, special diet, wheel chairs, custom beds and all the care he could ever need. Unfortunately, his disease progressed to a point that his quality of life was no longer great, and when he was found to have a tumor on his spleen we made the very hard choice to say goodbye. We also have an 11 (almost 12) year old female mastiff in the home and no children. We are not quite ready to bring another pup into our household, but we do want to eventually have another corgi and I would prefer to rescue if possible.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Corgis are my soul dogs. My parents got a corgi (female) when I was 5 and she lived for 16 years. We recently lost my corgi, Tucker. I honestly can't imagine my life without a corgi in it. I met one of my best friends on the day I got Tucker when I saw another couple in my apartment complex walking a corgi. They adopted two other corgis (2 males, 1 female), and our corgis grew up together and were best friends. Our other best friend also has a corgi (female), so we've known a variety of personalities in the breed. I am used to and can handle the corgi temperament, including the occasional aggression, yipping and nipping, along with the grooming care and medical challenges that can accompany the breed. The corgi energy level matches our lifestyle.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
On a daily basis, we would get exercise through walking around our yard. I like to take my dogs wherever I can when not at work, so car rides to run errands, vacations within driving distance, visits to friends, going to parks for walks and play and anything the dog shows interest in would be welcome and common activities.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
It would depend on what the pet responded best to, but a firm no and redirect of attention is usually sufficient for a pet that makes a bad choice. If there were continued and repeated issues, I would pursue additional training and/or remove the conflict from the situation (i.e. if a dog chews shoes, don't leave out shoes; if a pet has accidents, create a space where the accident is less destructive until better trained).
Discipline: |
I use a firm no and redirect for most discipline, and time out (for both of our benefit) if a situation is more severe.
I do not believe in hitting, shock or pinch collars or other physical punishments. I believe these cause fear and distrust in a pet, rather than fix the issue at hand. |
||||||
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
We like for my dogs to be with us when at home, if they wish. They sleep in our room in their own beds, and we have dog beds in almost every room of our home. If a kennel is required (safe space or behavioral), it would be in a place the pet would be comfortable when we aren't home. If a dog joined our family that had more energy than we could expend, we would look into a recommended doggie day care or walking service in our area.

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Our work provides flexibility to be home 1-2 days a week during the work week, and we are home most weekends. The average hours per week we would not be home is approximately 32-38.
Where would dog eat? |
In the kitchen/dining room, unless requiring special circumstances.
Where would dog sleep: |
In our bedroom, in a dog bed on the floor. Occasionally in our bed.
Play & exercise: |
We have a large yard with plenty of room to run and play. If a dog needed additional daily exercise, we would find a day care that would suit the energy needs.
Our yard is not fully fenced, but the property is essentially a peninsula enclosed on three sides by fencing or other natural barriers. We are on a private dead end drive far from busy roads. We do have a long lead that we can/do leverage in a supervised capacity. |
||||||
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
|
Fenced yard? |
No, I don’t have a fenced in yard.

Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Description of yard: |
We have two acres on a private dead end drive. Only one neighbor lives beyond us, so traffic is extremely limited. The yard encircles the home, and there is a small private spring fed lake in the back yard with a natural grade entry from the yard. The front yard has leafy trees and is open to the low traffic private dirt road, one side yard is fenced, the other side yard is thick with evergreens and brush. We do see a lot of wildlife in our yard, and take precautions with this knowledge.
Household members: |
|||||||
Everyone in household agrees about adopting a corgi? |
Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
|
May we do a home visit? |
Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.
Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care? |
Both of us | ||||||
Willing to train children? |
We do not have children and do not plan to. If we did, we of course would be very mindful of how we introduced pets and children. Children visitors would be closely monitored and instructed, or the pet would be removed from a situation that makes it uncomfortable.
|
Any allergies? |
No one is allergic. | ||||||
Current pets: |
|||||||
|
Current pets dog friendly? |
Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.
Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away? |
Even though Maggie is great with other dogs, we likely would wait until she is no longer with us before we welcome a new dog into the home. We of course would work to resolve any pet issues that could or may arise.
If the hedgehog is still with us when we welcome a new pet, they would not interact. |
||||||
|
Lifetime commitment to Pembroke? |
Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.
Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke? |
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.
|
Understand no guarantees? |
Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.
Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet? |
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.

Who is this dog for? |
Our family | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I had a pwc in college and he was an absolute delight. He was intelligent, stubborn and had a wonderful personality. My husband and I lost our first family dog in December. We are ready to become a two dog household again. The pwb is a good compromise for us as I would like a smaller dog and he doesn’t want a purse dog.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We would go on frequent walks, we go to fun outdoor activities such as barktober fest. We usually take our dogs with us to all family functions as they are a big part of our family.

Who is this dog for? |
My Wife and I. | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My wife has had a life-long love for corgi's. She loves the look in addition to the energy level and playful nature their personalities bring. We also like the size of the dog. We have not had much experience with the breed, other than researching local breeders to get puppies.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We are outgoing, social, and love being with people. We would love to be able to bring our corgi along with us wherever possible. We would be active by going on walks to local parks, social by visiting dog parks and being with friends, and around in the community.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I studied some operant conditioning in school and would focus on starting by reinforcing good or desired behavior. I'd then do my best to catch the dog in the mistake, give a firm (not yelling) "no", and redirect to appropriate or desired behavior.

|
Who is this dog for? |
Hello!
My name is Kara Grajkowski, and I am a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin – Madison studying Elementary Education and Special Education. My roommate and I are moving into a house next year, and we are looking to adopt a corgi! I have always wanted a corgi, and we are very excited to own one. We are not sure which house we are moving into yet, but once that information is finalized, I would love to get in touch to begin the adoption process. We are looking at places that accept dogs (it is our number one characteristic of a house!), and we are very interesting in rescuing a dog. After we graduate from college, I will take over as the provider of the dog. I will be paying for this dog and all of the vaccinations if necessary, as well as all of the additional items the dog will need. Therefore, it will be my corgi! I am so excited to take this next step in my life. My roommate and I are very excited for our corgi (we even have a name picked out!). I am interested in being added to the adoption list in case there are any adoptions available next fall. Please let me know if you need any additional information from me. I have included my roommate's information in case you need it. I would love more information about adoption, availability, and pricing! Thank you so much for helping me achieve a life-long dream!! I love my corgi already!!! |
||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I have wanted a corgi since I have been a child. My family has owned dogs for my entire life, and I feel comfortable with dogs as a pet. I love my animals at home and I miss them everyday! I have done research on Corgis since I was in high school. Recognizing the potential health problems and the average activity levels is critical in owning pets. I love Corgis, not only because I think that they are absolutely adorable, but because I love the personality and intelligence that come along with them. One of my close friend's parents owns three Pembroke Welsh Corgis and there is not a single time that I have walked into her house without crying! Though my family has never owned a Corgi, they have heard me talk about wanting one for a very long time! I plan on owning Corgis for my entire life because there is no better dog – in my opinion!!
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
As a student living on campus, my roommate and I plan to take our dog on walks every day, possibly once per person so our dog could have a lot of time outside! We are looking at houses with backyards so that the dog can explore. I have already asked my parents to construct a beautiful dog bed that I found on Pinterest for our dog to sleep in in our future living room. We will love our dog so much, and we already do! I am beyond excited to take the Corgi on walks, car rides, play with toys, and love it dearly!!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
As an education major, I recognize that mistakes will be made – by humans and animals alike! Treating my dog with respect while also showing the compassion and understanding of the mistake will help the mistake to not become recurring. Corgis are very intelligent, so successful house training will result in less mistakes.
Discipline: |
I do not believe in physical manipulation of a dog (unless moving them is necessary because they are in danger). Hitting and spraying them with water is something that I find disturbing and does not work. I do not understand why people feel that physical coercion is in the dog's best interest. I also do not believe in isolation and "time outs". Dogs deserve love, respect, and compassion just like humans do. Distractions like making a loud noise, in my opinion, work the best in disciplining a dog.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Our Corgi would spend most of his or her time in our house. With that being said, my roommate and I are very big dog lovers and do not see the value of leaving a dog alone for most of the day. With the intermittent class schedule of a student, we have the ability to visit the dog a lot throughout the day, allowing it to spend time outside and with human interaction throughout the course of the day.

As active college students, we are walking frequently throughout the day. Creating a schedule to ensure that our Corgi will be able to get adequate exercise is something that we have already discussed and are very interested in implementing. | Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
|
Who is this dog for? |
The two of us. We live in the country on a 17 acre farmette outside of Pecatonica Illinois. It is mostly wooded and prairie. We currently have an aged WP Corgi (our second) and an older Shelty. Our Corgi has terminal lymphoma so we are beginning to look for another Corgi. We have both recently retired and enjoy walks around the property with the dogs that seems to keep us all in relatively good shape.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We have had two Corgis so far and greatly enjoy their companionship, intelligence and curiosity. They seem to learn their lessons well and are relatively easy to train. Their coat is relatively easy to maintain for county living, and they are about the cutest dog as a puppy and as an adult. Love those ears.

Hannah Meyering & Shayne Yoakem
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
First of all, I love their spunky personalities and how love how it compliments their already adorable looks! I am a dog groomer so I do see a variety of breeds daily including some corgis and similar type breeds. I have researched the breed. I know and understand pembrokes health is very important and if overfed they can become obese, it is important to keep them on a well maintained diet and give regular exercise. I also keep my current dogs on Nupro which is a glucosamine supplement that helps with coat, skin, and overall general health. Also their grooming is very important as they are extreme shedders and need nails done and ears cleaned to reduce back problems and future ear infections. I know it is also important to make sure to exercise this breed because they were originally bred for herding and do usually like to be active even with their small legs 🙂 I also know that size doesn't affect how these dogs think, they are independant and do like to think for themselves. I would love the opportunity to get to rescue a dog of this breed!!
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
-exercise my pembroke daily (walks, swimming, dog park, obedience class)
-grooming as needed (at least every 8 weeks to maintain proper upkeep) -Socialize with other dogs whether it be my own, family/friends, or the dog park |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
If a pembroke makes a mistake, first identify the mistake and also identify if they KNOW if they have make a mistake. Then, correct the mistake by showing them and saying "No". If they do not do the mistake again and corrected it, reward them! Also, know difference between punishment and correction. Punishing a dog, especially a past mistake is not doing to teach them anything. Make sure your body language is firm when correcting.
Discipline: |
-Correcting right when the action is happening -Positive reaffirmation when the dog listens/learns |
||||||

Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I have always loved the breed having grown up with 2 different pembroke welsh corgis. They are so intelligent and clever and have so much big dog in a smaller dog body.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Any dog we adopt becomes a cherished member of the family and will be part of any and all activities possible. I enjoy long walks, hiking, and running and would bring the corgi along as often as possible. The corgi would also be part of just hanging out with the family whether we are watching tv and relaxing or doing something outside.

I am in my late sixties and my activity level is moderate. I own my house where there is a nice fenced back yard. My grandchildren range in age from 5-14 and in their homes they all are used to being around dogs, cats, snakes, and lizards. We had a Labrador retriever when I was growing up; while raising kids we had two rescue dogs and a cat who were integral to our family. As a single adult I lived for 14 years with two rescue cats who were brothers. I have a preference for a short-haired corgi over a long-haired one, but that's not a deal-breaker.

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
I am a single retired woman recently relocated from Seattle to Michigan to live near my kids, grandkids and friends.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I have casually known two people who had Corgis. In interactions with them I found corgis to be smart, active, and friendly. I've also been impressed that they were not aggressive or hostile in general toward people and other dogs. I've done some research about corgis over the past year on the internet.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Aside from walks in our neighborhood and parks, I'm a big gardener and spend a lot of time outside as the Michigan weather allows. I do have arthritis and have found that staying active is the best way to stay healthy, but I won't be doing any strenuous hiking, for example. It would be great if my corgi liked traveling in a car so we could take trips together. I've found from knowing my sisters and their dogs that dogs are happy when they are active and have responsibilities. – whether that's something organized like agility or informal like learning obedience or their role in the family.

Vocal commands, lead correction, and redirection; reinforce desired behavior. I'd also want to understand what provoked the "mistake" so we could lessen the possibility of that happening again regularly.
Discipline: |
Verbal or lead correction; practice and reinforce desired behavior. Remove from overstimulating situation to a quiet space.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Inside or outside where I am.

Why do you want a Pembroke? |
This might not paint me in the best light, but my first encounter with a corgi was when I was out for a run and accidentally love tapped a corgi who ran too close to me. I had my headphones in and all of a sudden felt something hit the back of my foot, turn around and see this little potato rolling around behind me. Horrified, I ran back to apologize to the owners and make sure the corgi puppy was okay. Just as quickly as it all happened, he sprung right back up and kept running around unfazed. It was the cutest thing in the world and from then I was obsessed from that day on!
I'm an active person, love being outside, and constantly in motion, so an active corgi would be the ideal dog to be able to go on run and walks with to help get that energy out! For such small dogs, they have such big personalities and unique quirks. My boyfriend and I currently have a 4 year old corgi named, Pizzaschool. This is not a typo, the dog's name is actually Pizzaschool. He's a HIGH energy tricolor corgi and can be outside for hours before he gets tired. Since he is on the longer (XL) side of most corgi's we do have to be careful of making sure he stays within a healthy weight bracket, so we keep him on a healthy diet, take him on runs/walks, and make sure he get a lot of outdoor time to get out all that energy. He gets his weekly brushing and nail trims. It’s definitely a two person job, but everyone appreciates a well groomed corgi! When he was 2-3 years old, we had some obedience issues with Pizzaschool getting food aggressive with people. We did basic training classes with him but had one too many incidents and ended up taking him to a training who specializes in dogs with aggressive behavior. Since then, we are continuously doing re-enforcement training, e-collar training, and rewarding him for positive behaviors and opportunities where he doesn’t impulsively react aggressively. We’ve learned to understand his behavior and keep him under his thresholds. It’s been a HUGE transformation, but we do have to be mindful of what situations we need to monitor him more. It’s been a lot of work to get Pizzaschool trained up, but he’s such a great dog. Loves attention and most certainly more of a people dog. He’s very active, doesn’t bark a lot, and can also be able to wind down and cuddle on the couch at the end of the day! I would love another corgi to round out the family! |
