Who is this dog for?

Our family is interested in adopting a Pembroke. We live on a mini farm with a fenced acre. We currently have a 10 month old husky and a 13-year-old Belgian Malinois. I have been involved in showing dogs in performance (and some conformation). I have had owned or still own a German shepherd Mix, two Belgian Malinois, an Australian shepherd, and a husky.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I've always wanted a Pembroke! Being in the dog show world, I've met many different corgis. Not only do I love how they look, but more importantly I love their "big" dog attitude in a short dog's body. We would like another herding dog to show in performance events.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
agility, obedience, hiking, rally obedience, cuddling.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If I catch it, I would stop the behavior or interrupt the dog and say, “no”. It’s important to get the dogs attention while catching him in the act.

Discipline:
Positive reinforcement with treats and praise for good behavior, spend a lot of time with the dog to catch any “bad” behavior and make him aware of what is acceptable and what isn’t. I have used a water spray bottle in the past to snap the dog out of aggressive behavior and it has worked, as well.

At home or out and about with me to run errands.

Winston, our newfie, enjoys playing with other dogs, but is more of a wrestler than a chaser. He doesn't mind dogs who run, but he will usually just watch them and wait until they come back (too much effort to chase!). He gets along with any dog who wants to hang out with him, including my dad's non-stop Brittany.

Toby, our cat, doesn't mind dogs. He will sometimes play with Winston.

We would like a dog who enjoys car rides. Winston goes almost everywhere with us.

We don't yet have a fenced yard. We are working on city permits and subdivision approval, however.

Who is this dog for?

Me and my family, which includes a husband, two kids (ages 11 and 17), a 4yo newfoundland, and a 5yo cat.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We have a big dog who would enjoy a canine companion, but another 160-lb dog might be too much for this household. We'd like a smaller friend who isn't intimidated by a big doofus. Corgis at the dog park are usually okay with Winston's size.

I love their personality. I call them the "playground monitors" when we're at the dogpark. They are not afraid to make the dogs settle down if they think it's getting too rambunctious.

My husband grins from ear-to-ear when he sees a corgi interacting with people and other dogs (he doesn't realize this, but I catch his big smiles). He has also mentioned he would like a smaller dog that he can relax with on his lap.

I have done my research, but I don't have ownership experience with this breed.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Dog park, dog beach, car rides, visits to Grandma and Grandpa (and Molly, their Brittany). Dane County, WI, has some of the best dog parks I've ever visited. We purchase an annual pass for Winston every year.

If the corgi has the tempermant (and the interest), I would love to go through canine good citizen classes so that we can become a B.A.R.C.C. therapy team (this is also my goal for Winston – he's almost old enough).

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Depends on the mistake. If it has to do with potty training, then it's up to the humans to pay more attention to the schedule and offer a communication tool like bells on the door. If it's destructive behavior, then it means we need to provide more stimulation and more exercise. Digging in the garden means we need to rethink how we garden (more container gardening, fencing around the off limits areas, offering a sanctioned place to dig, etc.).

You have to think about what's causing the mistake and figure out how to prevent t or redirect the behavior.

Discipline:
– Prevention (catch them before they do it) if possible
– Redirection (like when Winston steals socks from the laundry basket – trade it for an authorized dog toy)
-Stop and settle (like when he gets too much in our face with the barking or bumping)
-Lots of training and reinforcement of good behavior

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
At home, with me. I work from home, so Winston just hangs out (usually next to my desk). Corgi would do the same. We also allow sleeping on the bed and couches – furbabies are part of the family.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, almost all day, every day.

Where would dog eat?
Back hall, where Winston eats. If the corgi is more comfortable elsewhere, or is a food gobbler, we'd figure out a different location. Lots of options in this house.

Where would dog sleep:
Wherever he or she wanted. Winston and Toby are allowed on the beds and couches. If the corgi is crate-trained and more comfortable there, then we would make sure he/she has a crate bed.

Play & exercise:
Yes, of course. Leash walks daily. Off leash at the dogpark almost every other day. We play quite a bit at home, too. There's almost a 30-foot zone from front to back of house that Winston uses for fetching. We wrestle, tug, and play chase in a figure 8 around the couch and recliner, too.

If Winston is too boring or the corgie needs more canine stimulation than what we can get at the dog park, we also have some excellent doggie day cares that I would be willing to use once a week or so.

Description of yard:

Large backyard, but not yet fenced. We're working on permits. Winston has a 30-foot lead that gives him enough space to explore. He also enjoys hanging out on the second-story deck, where he can watch the neighborhood; the deck has a gate and can be completely enclosed.

Willing to train children?
Yes. Both of my kids are great with Winston and Toby. We also had an elderly barn cat that we adopted, named Loki. He was fussy sometimes, and both of my kids understood his boundaries. As he got older, they were very gentle with him (He died in spring of old age – he was 16 years old!).

My son is a gentle soul. My daughter is especially heartfull with animals.

Us, to add to our little family.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We already own the breed and will consider going through the same breeder as our first if we’re not given the opportunity to adopt. We love corgis, their energy, but ESPECIALLY their attitude. We like the way they look (naturally with or without tails). The attitude though, is truly our favorite. So much sass and intelligence.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Tug of war. Tag. Fetch (this one is more difficult to teach to corgis but is still very fun). Cuddling. Agility Course Fun (no competition, just for treats). Dog Park (if appropriate for specific dog).

Who is this dog for?

A family of 3. We have a son who is currently 6 and feel that a corgi would be a great fit for our family. A corgi aside from adorable looks fits the mold of being a "not too big nor too small" with a playful attitude that is family and older kid friendly. We have a fenced in back yard for him/her to run play in and live at the end of a cul-de-sac in a suburban dog friendly neighborhood that is great for walks. We would prefer a younger dog as the idea would be to grow up with our son.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
As I said before, a corgi aside from adorable looks fits the mold of being a "not too big nor too small" with a playful attitude that is family and older kid friendly. It is our favorite breed of dog. We are very affectionate and attentitive to pets in our family (we have one cat currently that endures this already) Due to its playful and curious attitudes but also the breeds occasional clumsiness or quirkiness fits in well with our family. I (Michael) have a few friends that have owned corgis that I have been fortunate enough to spend time with and has only increased my desire to raise one of my own.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
While not a super active family we enjoy walks at parks and in our neighborhood. Our son is an active baseball and soccer player who would love a partner to practice with. I would also consider trying to teach the corgi to swim in our gated access pool. We have an open floor layout home where a dog might be able to run fairly freely to play inside as well. We have no real steps to speak of (great for short legs)

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If caught in middle of the act, firmly tell them NO and redirect their behavior. If mistake is found well after the act then try to approach the problem logically for a solution (EG if a shoe or childs toy is chewed or damaged it probably means that they either need more chew toys themselves or that the toys/shoes shouldn't be made so accessible to the dog.) It is just as much my fault as much as it is the dogs for failing to prevent the mistake from happening in many cases.

Discipline:
Verbal reprimands and commands such as "NO" "Stop" "stay" "down". Rewarding positive behavior is also a goal.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In and around our home and small neighborhood.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Being a teacher my wife gets off early in the day (3pm) However there would be no one at the house between 8am and 3pm.

Where would dog eat?
Out of a corgi sized food and water dish to be located in a corner of our dining room.

Where would dog sleep:
While we would welcome the corgi to sleeping on any bed of its choosing. It will have a doggy bed available to it in our Guest room which is also were a crate would be kept to be used only in rare occasions.

Play & exercise:
We have an active 6 year old who loves to play, bike and run in our back yard and neighborhood. During the summer I expect the corgi to get several hours of outdoor playtime a day. During the winter months I would expect the corgi to receive at least one walk a day and a backyard run with weather permitting. There will be plenty of indoor running/playing to make up for weather.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
6ft Wood Privacy fence on 2 sides with a 4 foot twisted metal fence on the back. This fence faces an open unused field where we would occasionally let the corgi run and play. It occasionally contains deer and horses being trained/ridden. The final side is the back of the house.

We have a fenced in back yard with a gated above ground swimming pool. The gate prevents access to pets and small children. We have grass to play in and a patio to lay on. We also my computer workshop shed with its own doggy door which will contain at the very least water and sometimes food as a break from out door activities, heat or rain when in the back yard.

Household members:

Everyone in household agrees about adopting a corgi?
Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

May we do a home visit?

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Michael and Jessica will share responsibilities.

Willing to train children?
Our goal is to raise a dog alongside a child and that means that we hope they both learn how to live, interact, and treat one another. As Jacob gets older he will gain responsibilities regarding the dog.

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Current pets:

Current pets dog friendly?

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Yes, at first an attempt would be made a training pets to better get along. As we only have 1 cat currently that is seemingly friendly toward other pets we hope this will suffice but the cat has the ability to avoid the dog if it chooses/wishes. In a worst case scenario the cat has an alternate location it can be moved to in event of no peaceable cohabitation.

We currently have 2 cats and a chinchilla, so we have to have a dog that does well with cats. The chinchilla is in a cage for most of the day and is only ever let out in an enclosed space with no other animals in the room. We aren't incredibly active, but we're more than willing to go for a couple walks a day for our furry friends. Additionally, we currently live in an apartment but have plenty of open backyard space in which to walk as well as a park <1 block away and a dedicated dog park <1 mile away.

Who is this dog for?

Myself and my husband (listed as applicant #2).

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We did initial research with a good friend who is well versed in dog training and ownership where we tried to lay out very specific criteria for the type of dog that would fit well into our lives and corgis seem to fit. We were looking for dog breeds that could get along well with cats, are incredibly affectionate (I work from home and spend all day off and on loving on my cats – I would hope that our dog would want the same kind of attention), has a medium to low energy level or medium high but a smaller size, is relatively easily trained given that we will be first time dog owners and that I would really like to do obedience training and maybe even therapy training with my dog, and who generally have an average life span over 10 years.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Hanging around the house and going on walks to the park mostly. Occasionally we do short road trips (~1-2 hours) to go visit our family or friends who also have dogs and we would love to bring our dog along for socialization and playtime.

We'd really like to use positive reinforcement training with our dog, so in the case of mistakes we wouldn't be interested in punishment as much as using the mistake as a training opportunity.

Ensuring no rewards for bad behavior, 'time out' where the dog is asked to sit or lay down, and absolutely NEVER any physical punishment.

We do not have any children, are unable to conceive, and uninterested in adoption. In the highly unlikely event that we were to come into parenthood, we would be more than willing to treat our children how to appropriately interact with and care for animals in a way that benefits both them and the animal.

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Absolutely. We fully intend on ensuring that our cats – and the dog will have spaces that are only theirs to retreat to in case they feel they need it during the first few months of living in the house. If, at that point we are able to integrate everyone so that they are able to be around each other with no issues, then great, otherwise we would find other ways of dealing with any problems that may arise.

Who is this dog for?

Family pet, we are a married couple and already have one corgi at home.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We adopted Lola in June 2018. She was 6 years old at the time. We re-homed her from a breeder, so she has had 5 litters. We absolutely love the corgi breed. We needed a dog that would be able to provide emotional support for us and want to be around people. She loves meeting everyone who comes over and has to introduce to everyone she meets on walks. We love her personality. She is a bit of a couch potato compared to the typical corgi demeanor. She never had toys, but we are working everyday to increase her activity level and play more. We would love to have another corgi that would provide companionship for Lola and us as well as help Lola be more active.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We walk Lola twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. We also try to play with Lola as much as possible, but we are still working to get her interested in toys. We only leave her home alone for 5-6 hours a day. We are able to fluctuate our schedules to make sure someone is around to play and cuddle with her throughout the day. Lola never learned to play fetch, but we are working on this. We would continue all these activities with a second corgi,

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Depending on the mistake, we would train using stern commands. We would also try to prevent the behavior again depending on what that is. We never get mad at Lola or try to intimidate her in anyway.

Discipline:
We use stern commands with Lola. If she does something wrong, we try not to give her attention right away so she knows the behavior was not ok.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
We have a single family home with a large fenced back year. We also have a screen porch with a dog door access to the fenced yard.

People at home during the day?
My husband and I both work full-time. However, he can be flexible with his hours based on my schedule. I am currently a graduate student, So my schedule varies on the day and week. We have two local dog sitters who help us when we need someone to feed or walk Lola on very busy days.

Where would dog eat?
We have our dog food/water area in our common living area between the kitchen and living room, it is all open.

Where would dog sleep:
It would sleep anywhere it wanted in the house. We have a dog bed in our bedroom that Lola loves to sleep in at night.

Play & exercise:
We will walk the corgi twice a day. A few times a week we try to go to a new park or a new neighborhood to walk. We have dog toys and bones we give to Lola and encourage her to play with. We leave the toys out all the time for play, especially when we are not home.

Who is this dog for?

This Pembroke is for myself. I am looking to adopt a healthy corgi in the Illinois/Wisconsin area.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I want to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi because I love the breed. I am looking for an fairly active and beautiful breed that can match my lifestyle. I have spent the past year dog sitting a corgi mix and I am excited to have one of my own. I have been researching smaller breed that also have healthy records which is where I came across this organization as a way for me to adopt a corgi in need of a loving home.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I would take my Pembroke on my daily walks, typically under a mile. I also would take my Pembroke along with my on my weekend trips exploring neighborhoods in Chicago and spending time outside.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Using positive reinforcement (treats) I will reward the good behavior and pay no attention when the dog makes a mistake or needs to change the behavior.

Positive reinforcement such as treats and if the behavior is out of hand then the dog will be put into their crate for a limited time so they are able to calm down.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Mostly out and about in the house but my home is to train the Pembroke to sleep in a dog bed I will place within their crate.
